Brian Billick emerging as a serious target for Notre Dame
-
One Man GangI was about half asleep during the half, but I did hear one of the announcers say he would be a serious target for ND.
Would he be a good fit? -
jordo212000Uggh. I don't think that would be a good move.
-
SageI would El O El

jordo212000How'd the last experiment with an NFL guy go?
-
RotinajIm not sure you can compare Billick and Weis.Billick was 85-67 with a super bowl as a head coach in the NFL and Weis was never more than an assistant.

Both are arrogant guys who think they're smarter than everybody else, so there is one comparisonRotinaj wrote: Im not sure you can compare Billick and Weis.Billick was 85-67 with a super bowl as a head coach in the NFL and Weis was never more than an assistant. -

rock_knutneBrian Billick will NOT be the next HC at ND. ND's AD, Jack Swarbrick clearly stated in an interview that if a search for a new HC is to be put in place (which will likely happen), it's imperative that they hire a PROVEN man to take over the program. I would say Billick is a long shot according to Swarbrick's criteria, the guy hasn't coached in several years and not 100% sure, but he has zero college experience. I doubt ND goes down that path again.

I didn't think he had any experience either, but he does. He made alot of stops at different colleges early on in his careerrock_knutne wrote: not 100% sure, but he has zero college experience. I doubt ND goes down that path again. -
darbypitcher22The problem with pro coaches jumping back to college is they know a lot of football but zilch about recruiting. In the NFL your players are provided for you by scouting department, trades, free agency, etc. You need to know how to recruit to have good teams in college, and most pro coaches either forget how to do that or have no idea how to do that

I agree with the point about NFL coaches, but Billick has been a recruiting coordinator beforedarbypitcher22 wrote: The problem with pro coaches jumping back to college is they know a lot of football but zilch about recruiting. Sounds like Eric Mangini.believer wrote: Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. -
darbypitcher22That experience will probably help Billick but how long ago was that? I'm sure the recruiting game has changed a lot since he was last in the college game.
-

It most definitely has changed, but guys with less experience than him get head coaching gigs all the time. He'd be fine IMO. (Still don't think ND should hire him though)darbypitcher22 wrote: That experience will probably help Billick but how long ago was that? darbypitcher22I know that bit you just said irks a lot of guys who paid their dues and are continually passed over for jobs. I think it sets a dangerous precedence, seeing some schools go with youthful bravado and arrogance (Tennessee) over experience. But that's just my opinion. I know if I was a guy who started as a paper pushing GA somewhere and worked my way into a coordinator's position and was an assistant for 20 some odd years I'd be pretty pissed if I lost out a job to a young guy who's only been at it for a few years(and I know Kiffin and others have been at it for 10+, just saying)

thedynasty1998Notre Dame will always sell itself, so a great recruiter isn't always necessary (see Weis). I think Billick is a proven head coach, and that's what Notre Dame needs. Plus, he won't be scared off by the Notre Dame pressure because he has had an NFL job. I for one think it would be an interesting hire. I'm not saying he would be my #1 if I were the Notre Dame AD, but it is interesting none the less.

darbypitcher22I'm not sure Notre Dame sells itself as well as it did 15 or 20 years ago... It really hasn't since Lou Holtz left IMO

That's not true anymore, kids do not line up to go to ND as they did 15/20 years ago. Willingham thought the same way and he left ND with no depth what so ever when he was let go. Weis has done a brilliant job at recruiting but he has to work extremely hard at it, constantly on the road and selling ND to potential recruits. Also, Weis gets it, he's an ND guy and can convey the message. I really believe the next coach has to be a very good recruiter with a proven track record and Billick ain't it. -
darbypitcher22I've always thought that at certain schools you need to be a "school" guy to understand the job and be successful at it, but I'm not sure that's the case at Notre Dame.
-
rock_knutneI will say this, if Brian Billick is hired as the next HC then it will be very clear that the people in charge are completely clueless and incompetent.
-
darbypitcher22I'm wondering how they're going to handle the money. Not only are they going to have to buy out Weis, but they're also going to have to buy out his staff. That could easily be a $40-50 million process according to Mark May. Where are they going to come up with the money to throw a high profile guy to take this job?

True to a certain extent but you also have to be motivated. Clearly Willingham and Davie were not, Weis is but he can't develop the talent he recruited. Also, ND has not recruited a stud Dlineman since Justin Tuck, that ain't good. So you need someone who can recruit the entire package not just offensive weapons, which ND does not lack inder Weis.darbypitcher22 wrote: I've always thought that at certain schools you need to be a "school" guy to understand the job and be successful at it, but I'm not sure that's the case at Notre Dame. -
DaBrowns41Well... They are one of the most prestigious schools in the nation and have more money than any of us count coming in...
They'll find a way to get the one they want, I'm sure. -
darbypitcher22I'm not so sure Davie was ready to handle taking over for a legend in South Bend (Holtz) and if I'm correct Willingham wasn't the 1st pick for the job anyways(didn't that follow the O'Leary debacle?)

I believe ND has an endowment of over $5 billion but they can get it done with out even dipping in to that pot. I'm sure some influential alumni can/will come up with the cash. Swarbrick has already said that money is no object.DaBrowns41 wrote: Well... They are one of the most prestigious schools in the nation and have more money than any of us count coming in...
