Up 41-16 in the 4th quarter ... do you go for 2?

  • gorocks99
I'll be the first to admit that my team blows HARD this season. They're staring 1-11 in the face for the second time in four seasons. They just lost to their biggest rivals (Wisconsin) for a record 7th straight year. An interesting moment in the game however came with about 6:30 to play, as Wisconsin scored to make it 41-16.

Bret Bielema made the call to go for 2.

Coach Tim Brewster was miffed after the game, and there have been mixed reactions. There's always the stance "If you don't like it, stop them". I get it. And my team couldn't stop South Dakota let alone Wisconsin. But, in that instance, I think it was a little overboard. Take your 42-16 lead and move on. What say you? Was Bielema justified in going for 2 at that point in the game? Was it classless?

P.S. I hope the Buckeyes stomp that smug sonofabitch this weekend.

You don't go for 2. 4 possession lead regardless; kick the fucking extra point.

I hope OSU is in a similar position, and Tressel goes for 2 to stick up for the "little guys" in the conference.

only if "the card told me to"--right, Bret ??

Using the card as a reason/excuse makes it even more of a bitch move.

I would be shocked if Tress did that.

I would not go for two. There was no reason that I know of to do that. (I could see doing it if the team had previously tried to run the score up on you, but I don't think that's the case here.)

    EXACTLY !!!

Only if they won't let me go for 3.

Maybe OSU will throw some karma at Wisconsin this weekend.
  • krambman
He said he went for two because the two point conversion card told him to. Well that card is based off of mathematical principles. Anyone with some basic knowledge of math could come up with cards to tell you what play to run in ever situation. In that case, if you're simply going to blindly do what some card tells you to do then you shouldn't be a head coach!

I think more teams should go for 2 in actual game situations.
  • gorocks99
Funny part about the card is, if it told him to go for 2 up 25 in the 4th quarter, why didn't he go for 2 when they scored earlier that quarter to make it 34-9?
  • fan_from_texas
I think it's fine, albeit slightly tacky.

You must be a Lane Kiffin fan.

if you watched his post game presser, he had a hard time not grinning when he made the "card" comment--that was a bunch of BS. This was remnants of when Bielema sprinted across the field after Wisky beat Minny to retain the axe, which Brewster said he would do when Minny beat them--it's all gamesmanship...but going for two was just wrong, and yes, karma's a bitch :p

    A few points:

-Not sure where McCallum gets his clock, but the official stats appear that the TD happend with nearly 7 minutes in the game, not 4:30 (if someone can post a more accurate clock I would appreciate it).

    - They didn't even make the conversion, is no point better than the automatic one?

    - Brewster should have been fired a year ago

Doi, you're right. 6:39 to play, not 4:30 to play.

that wouldn't be the first Jack McCallum mistake, which is why he's been demoted at least twice by SI despite his seniority.

bielma is a tool. brewster has a right to be pissed about this. i'd like to know why the animosity between these two. i know the rivalry is HUGE, but big enough to rub it in like this? i don't know...

    hold on...

the dude went for two based off a cheat sheet that almost every single coach in the NCAA used, and didn't even convert it. Yet half of this board is acting like they have all been personally hurt by this. Shut the hell up. It's a rivalry, and shit happens. OSU fans almost ejaculate when you mention Coach Hayes saying "Because they wouldnt let me go for three".

Yeah, its a little tacky to go for two in this instance, but shit happens and get the fuck over it. Brewster has a shit program and is a shit coach.

If it were high school/youth sports, then I would say there is something is wrong with it. But this is college football, coaches getting paid millions a year and players getting a free education. Suck it up and stop them.

Coach Bieleim, what are you doing on this forum? Shouldn't you be worried about OSU?

Can't stand Beilema- the only reason you go for two in that situation is to ruffle some feathers. He's not that stupid- he knows people are going to react negatively- and he did it anyway.
