    #5 defense vs. #52 defense.

Do you feel Boise St has the top defense in the country?

Also I'm not saying OSU's defense isn't very very good. It is. I think there is some kind of flaw in the ranking system when Boise St has the #1 ranked defense in the country.

Boise State has a very good defense, one of the best in the nation and the stats prove so.

Thats based on yards per game. It doesnt matter how many yards per game you give up if you're not giving up points. Yards dont go on the scoreboard

Well, if we are going by that, look at Arizona......

If you want to go by that, you have to include the fact that OSU's special teams are on the hook for 21 points this year. Oregon hasn't allowed a special teams TD.

Also throw in that Oregon's defense has been on the field a lot more than OSU's defense due to how much and how fast Oregon's offense scores. If they are averaging a point a minute, there is going to be more opportunity for defense to be scored on.

Why? His stat was concerning points scored on OSU's defense only. My only point was that you'd have to take out 21 points if you want to look at the "points scored against" argument.

Your point would be something outside that argument, and something outside objective statistics. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you, but that is a different issue imo.

I don't disagree with you on what you are saying. My overall point is stats can be misleading sometimes, especially when comparing teams of contrasting styles. OSU has been effective for the most part on offense, but I think it is safe to say that Oregon has proven to be a little more explosive, especially on a consistent basis, than OSU. OSU is 12th in the country in TOP compared to 89th for Oregon. Controlling the ball/game on offense has always been a part of Tressel's plan.

Agreed on all counts. To further that point, defensive statistics are completely dependent on the collective teams that defense has faced. To say Boise has the best defensive in the county discounts the the schedule they have faced. Same goes for OSU so far this season, which has collectively played a weak schedule to this point.

This also goes to my argument regarding the debate between OSU/Oregon for the #2 spot. It is obvious that the media and voters prefer flashy offense and high point totals. However, Tressel's philosophy of grinding out a lead, running the football and relying on the defense doesn't necessarily mean OSU isn't as good as Oregon because they don't blow their opponents out. It just means he has a different method of winning than does Chip Kelly. But I'm not worried about that #2 spot yet, plenty of games left to be played out.

I agree completely here. That is why I questioned that ranking when it was first posted. Boise St does have a solid defense. Their defensive line is very solid and has a few guys with the Jared Allen type motors. I just don't really think they are the best defense in the country. A lot of their success can be attributed to the effectiveness of their offense and in general how most of their games go.

who do you think has the best defense, and why?

It is impossible to say who has the overall best defense. Ohio State, Iowa, Arizona, Nebraska, Alabama all have to be considered. If I had to choose I'd probably say Nebraska at this point, but a case can be made for each of the others. And yes I know Alabama is young, especially in the secondary.

I'm sure there are others and like I said, stats aren't always the best way to rank a defense or offense. Boise State has a very good defense, but there is no way to say they are the best defense in the country.
