Hypothetical questions?(BCS stuff)

  • wes_mantooth
Assuming Boise wins out, what needs to happen for them to get into the BCS championship game? Will a one loss SEC or other major conference team leapfrog them?

Also, with OSU iffy performance today, could they get jumped by Florida if they defeat Alabama?

Any other interesting bcs scenarios to discuss?

Fla isn't in the top 5. They won't jump. FLa has had about 3 iffy performances. Boise wont' jump OSU or an SEC team if they win out. If OSU loses or an SEC team loses...then Boise is in, IF they continue to win impressively. They need help.

^ If Oregon/Stanford and Nebraska win out, chances they jump Boise?

    Without a doubt.

If one of those 3 win out, and finish the season undefeated, they will jump Boise, do the the Competition.

Any undefeated team from the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-10, Big XII, and ACC would finish ahead of Boise. Any one loss SEC team would finish above Boise. One loss Pac-10 or Big Ten or Big XII teams would have a chance to be ahead of them, but it is too close to call.

Consider this. We are into week 5 of the season. It's getting into dangerous territory for a 1-loss team to lose going forward and creep back ahead of an unbeaten Boise. It's much easier if you are a top 5 team, lose in week 2 and then win 10 or 11 straight (including a conference title) to jump someone. It's tough to lose in week 8 or 9 and then have enough steam to get back into the top 2. The way the polls work, it's tough to jump teams ahead of you late in the year if they don't lose.

If NC State goes undefeated (and that's a big IF), they will not jump Boise State. They are the only ACC team capable of going undefeated.

If N.C. State runs the table they will have beaten Boise's best win and several teams better than that, and would absolutely finish above Boise State in the final BCS standings.

If N.C. State goes 13-0 they will have wins over Georgia Tech, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Clemson and then either GT, MIA or VT again in the ACC-CG. They would be ahead of Boise State. Then again, it's the ACC, and nobody is going to have less than 2 losses. Everyone except Miami will have at least 3...

Just another scenerio....opinions on this one

Lets say Florida beats Bama tonight, but then turns around and loses to them in the SEC championship game. Assuming there are no other undefeated teams besides OSU, does Bama jump Boise that late in the season?

So Alabama wins the SEC championship? No voter on earth would have Boise ahead of Alabama.

Yeah, I agree...but at some point I would think that Boise would get their shot.

They will get their shot if everyone falls on their faces or if they play more than 1 or 2 real games a year.

The rankings just don't support NC State moving all the way into title contention and ahead of Boise State.

Yes, NC State has the harder schedule, but Boise State was given the gift of a high preseason ranking. If NC State were competing for the SEC/Big XII/Big Ten title, then they might. But they are in the ACC, currently the 5th (at best) of the major BCS conferences. The coaches will do what they have to in the poll to ensure that Boise State remains ahead of NC State. I guarantee it.

If there are 3 undefeated teams at the end of the season: The SEC champion, Boise State, and NC State, NC State is the odd man out because they were not ranked at the beginning of the season. Boise State is not going to be punished in the polls for running the table this year, even if their schedule is bad.

I wouldn't bet one that. People are wanting the little guy in a title game, ala Butler in bball. I could see Boise sneaking in , in that scenio. Wouldn't shock me.

Every year we talk about this. And it never happens. We have had one year, Auburn where there was a bit of a discussion. Typically, everything works out in favor of the BCS system.

The safe bet, as CBF said, is that the number of unbeaten BCS teams at the end of the year will be 2 or less. When that is the case, nobody really has a case to complain about being screwed by the system. However, the interesting point this year will be given the high starting rankings of Boise State and TCU, will they be given the benefit of the doubt.

The comparison to Butler in basketball is valid, but I disagree about what people wanted to see. I guarantee you people would've rather seen Duke/Kentucky, Duke/Kansas or Kentucky/Kansas in the championship game. However, once all the top seeds were gone other than Duke, people figured they might as well see Butler get a chance to win it all.

Butler won 5 games in a tournament to reach the final. Boise plays one game all season. I don't see it as the same thing. How many teams in AQ conferences would go undefeated if they had Boise's schedule? I think it would be several.

Yeah, it isn't similar. That's basically what my post said. You can't compare basketball to football, it's a totally different way of determining the champion. I think CBF and I were strictly talking about the common fan wanting to see the underdog get a shot at the title.
