I am not a michigan hater per say, I always want them to be second best to OSU. Go undefeated and then get clownstomped in the game every year. This is because A. it makes the clownstomping more impressive and competitive, B. It is more painful for the michigan fan. I do enjoy a good appy state win over michigan, but most of the the time I hope they succeed so they can fall at the end of the season.

In the 90s, I hated them cause they ruined many of my Fall November Saturdays. Now I sortof feel bad for them, although I admit, they look to be heading back in the right direction. Cost us undefeated seasons in '93, 95' and '96 ... grrrrr!

^ This is also why I hate michigan and want to ruin their chance for success because they did it to us with a shit eating grin on their face.

I'm not convinced yet. They looked great last year too, until the wheels fell off.

well the michigan - ohio state rivalry started long before i was born. over a hundred years before i was born actually. I don't hate michigan, i dislike their fans who live 20 feet from the shoe and feel the need to try and tell me why Michigan is the better team. I wish michigan the best, until they play OSU. Sometimes, like when they lost to App. St., i laugh my ass off at their expense.

How about the ones that live as close to the Big House as The Shoe? ;)

I actually think all of us Ohioans owe a debt of gratitude to the state up north...

after all, the only thing that keeps our great state from slipping into the Ohio River is that Michigan sucks.

    because I'm from Ohio.

Also, because my first three years at Ohio State were 1995, 1996 & 1997.

I've never really lumped you into the troll category on here, but you're moving rapidly in that direction.

I don't hate Michigan. It's like I say to the Penn State fans I work with here in State College, "I root for Penn State every week but one."

I feel the same about Michigan. Although I enjoyed it immensely when Appy State beat the Wolverines in the Big House, I still want Michigan to do well...so I can enjoy it when the Buckeyes curb-stomp them in November.

It's amazing though. The flat out hatred Penn State fans have for Ohio State is friggin profound. Seriously...I have yet to meet a PSU fan who roots for Ohio State even if it will make the Big 10 look better.

When I say I "hate" Michigan it is not in the same sense that I hate a serial rapist. There is a rivalry here, a long rivalry because both programs have been great, and many times the Big Ten title has been on the line between the teams.

I respect Michigan and "hate" defined as We must defeat this team as honor is at stake. I love Ohio St and then the Big Ten. Michigan is a part of the Big Ten which I consider family in an odd sort of way. It is like you and your twin brother competing for a starting spot on a varsity team. I cheer for Michigan when they play out of conference. I am not sold that hate in its normal context is appropriate.

Another example, would you really wish harm upon Michigan and their student base including athletics? I think real hate would do that. I do not wish harm upon Michigan or its student base.

    Then again.........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwGXMryTbwE ;)

Because Michigan tried to steal Toledo from Ohio, even though today I think Ohio would be happy to give Toledo to Michigan. The port of Toledo was a big deal back in the day

Exactly. I live about an hour south of the Michigan border and our area was loaded with Michigan fans in the 90s (especially being very close to Charles Woodson's hometown) and it pissed me off like nothing ever could when they would ruin our season every year. It's been laughable the last 8 years but it is actually getting old with UM being so horrendous. I look forward to the rivalry becoming what it once was.

Because Woody said it should be so...

I hate them because they beat the tar out of OSU most of the 90s through my younger days. They ruined many great OSU seasons. At that time their fans were unbearable. There are many OSU fans that way now and I'd bet that most of them like that are too young to know what the M*ch*gan fans were like.

As many have said, my hatred of michigan isn't the same as my hatred for a rapist/murderer/terrorist etc. My hatred stems from a combination of past and present. It's a huge rivarly that people in both states are BORN into and it's so polarizing there isn't room for a "grey area". You're on one side or the other and you're on those sides for dozens of reasons, most of which are older than you or even your parents, combined with many reasons that arise as years go by (such as Michigan's dominance of Cooper, Desmond Howard's punt return etc) and many many close games that define how your whole year goes. I have a lot of respect for Michigan, and a vast hatred for them because of it. If it were any other part of life they'd probably tell fans of both teams that we have some sort of mental illness for this respect/hatred complex, but hey it's football. And that's what makes the rivalry so great.

And btw, my default answer to this question has always been "because I lived through the John Cooper era".
