Mike and Mike: Reggie Bush to be stripped of Heisman
-
devil1197Bush to have his Heisman revoked by the end of this month. Heard it on Mike and Mike.
Thoughts? -
FatHobbitHe's a cheater so why not. But the Heisman goes to the most popular player in college football, not the best, so I wasn't losing any sleep over it.
-
krambmanI just got a text from ESPN saying the same thing. Sounds like Yahoo! Sports is breaking the news.
This seems like the right move to me. He has been retroactively declared ineligible for that season, all of USC's wins have been stripped, and all of his records have been removed from all official books for that year. Also, I think that the school giving the trophy back kind of gave the Heisman Trust permission to do this. The school had to take the trophy off display, but they didn't have to send it back, they could have simply stored it. It was as if they were telling the Heisman Trust that this needed to happen. I hope that they don't re-vote, or award young the trophy now, I hope that the award is just vacated for that year. -
devil1197Young won't take the trophy, he already stated that.
-
Mohican00While Young deserved it that year more than Bush, I don't want the Heisman committee to set precedent by giving it to VY.

A cheater? You dont think he was the best player that season? -
FatHobbit
I think that it's been well documented that he was a cheater. (If college players should be played is a completely different argument, but currently they are not.)Rotinaj;474619 wrote:A cheater?
You could make an argument for Vince Young that season, but I would not argue that Reggie wasn't one of the best players that year. My problem with the Heisman in general is that I think it's pretty hard to compare positions and say that one player is better than another when they play different positions. If they said the Heisman went to the flashiest player on one of the two title teams I could agree with that, but that's not what it's supposed to be about.Rotinaj;474619 wrote:You dont think he was the best player that season? -
RotinajHow does getting money and whatever else make him a cheater?
-
BCBulldogWho cares? It would be better if the Heisman Trust would just say that they have no interest in re-writing history. It sets a bad precedent that will only open a Pandora's box of arguments to strip other previous winners. Does Troy Smith now have to give his back because he also took improper benefits? What about OJ for what he did after football? It's not like Ricky Williams started smoking weed after college. Others that might be linked to PED usage. Eric Crouch was a quitter. Etc., etc., etc...
Why even open the door to this discussion if you are the Heisman trust? -
Pick6just heard that this report is false. Even if it were true, I would be against it because whatever illegal benefits he received did not directly effect his play on the field. The Heisman goes to the best player in college football, and IMO the best player in college football that year (pre bcs champsionship) was Reggie Bush.

Little DannyIn a related story, Kim Kardashian has asked for Bush to give back all the booty she gave him the pass couple of years before their breakup.
I'm kidding of course, but it is in a similar in one respect. -- it has already been given to him. Taking it away after the fact due to some inproprieties does not change that. It's not as if taking the trophy away will harm Bush or USC in any way. He is still going to get paid millions in the NFL and USC is still going to be USC. If anything, Bush will profit off the deal years from now when is no longer an active player in the fact everyone will talk about how he had his trophy taken away and whether he should get it back (see Rose, Peter Edward). I would not be surprised if 30 years from now, we see an aging Reggie Bush in Vegas or outside the Downtown Athletic Club signining memorabilia for cash. -

this is a logical argument. Agreed. -
devil1197Troy Smith already served his punishment for his benefits before his Heisman season.
OJ's and William's actions took place well after they were done with their Heisman season.
Bush's improper benefits took place DURING his Heisman year. Without the Heisman trophy right now, there is no proof that Bush played football in the record books.
Not a logical argument. I could care less either way, but those examples above make no sense since the actions did not take place during the Heisman year. -

Well, he wasn't supposed to get money and or extra benefits. He did, so he's a cheater. -
karen lotzEither way lets hope this serves as some closure for the whole thing. Time for everyone to move on. We have a new exciting college football season upon us and I'd rather not have talking heads on ESPN talking about Bush/USC. Talk about the teams and stories of this year.
-
Scarlet_BuckeyeIt should be awarded to Vince Young.
