Penn State just confirmed what The Patriot-News reported first earlier in the day: true freshman Robert Bolden will start at quarterback Saturday against Youngstown State at Beaver Stadium.
Two sources close to the Penn State program told The Patriot-News that Bolden beat out sophomore contenders Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome for the job.
Shortly after Wednesday's practice, Joe Paterno made it official in a statement issued on gopsusports.com:
"Based on what we have seen to this point, Bolden has a slight edge right now, but we are confident all three quarterbacks are ready to go and hope to give them an opportunity to play until we settle on the one that gives us the best chance to win," Paterno said.
The 6-3, 221-pound Bolden didn't arrive in State College until late June but was a standout in August practice sessions, displaying a big arm and solid running skills.
One source told The Patriot-News the quarterbacks were informed of the decision prior to today and told to keep quiet.
Another true freshman, Paul Jones of Sto-Rox, is expected to redshirt.
The decision comes a day after Paterno would not name a starter during his weekly in-season news conference.
