College Football Hot Seat

  It's that time again, the college football season is almost upon us and that means discussion about the coaches whose teams need to do well this year or they may find themselves looking for work by season's end. So, who are some of the coached out there sitting on the hot seat and how hot is the seat they're on.
  
  I'll start by listing the five guys in the Big Ten that should feel a little nervous.
  
  Very Hot:
  Ron Zook - Illinois probably has to finish with a winning record or he'll be out. I'm honestly not sure why he wasn't fired last season.
  Rich Rodriguez - With an 8-16 record overall and NCAA sanctions and an NCAA investigation at his old school I think he needs nine wins and a bowl game, and some of those nine wins need to come against OSU, Penn State, Michigan State, or Notre Dame.
  
  Warm:
  Brett Bilema - Hasn't been able to find the same success he had his first season. With high expectations this year his team needs to do well.
  Tim Brewster - He seemed to be getting the Minnesota program turned around, but they may have stalled, and with a new stadium they need to sell tickets.
  Mark Dantonio - Again, another guy who seems to have made strides at his school but MSU just can't seem to get over the hump. Maybe no one can win at MSU.
  
  So, who else in college football has a fire burning under their chair coming into this season?

  Bielema will probably be OK at Wisconsin. I agree with Brewster, it's time to put up a bowl win, even with the more difficult schedule. They're picked last in the Big Ten this year by almost everyone, if they can get to a bowl game (even a minor one) and win, give him another couple years to work.

  I still can't figure out why Minnesota let Glenn Mason go. He was overachieving considered what he had to work with.

  I don't think Dantonio should be on the hot seat. He came into a system he had to overhaul to get to his type of football, and was still able to be fairly successful, unlike Rich Rod @ UM. He's recruited pretty well lately, and I think they give him time to get his players and his system fully up and running.

  Yeah I think Dantonio is fine also. The MSU administration absolutely loves the guy.
  
  No offense to MSU, but there really has never been any urgency to win a B10 title up there. Dantonio will have his job for a long time just as long as he consistently finishes in the top five in the league and occasionally beats the Wolverines. Since Michigan has been so bad the past three years, there has been very little pressure on MD.

  I think Steve Spurrier should be. It seems like he is pulling in pretty good recruiting classes every year...then goes 6-6 or 7-5

  Glen Mason was pretty consistently a 6-6 coach, same as Brewster - I don't think they've moved the needle one way or the other with the coaching change. He went 10-3 in 2003 when they had Marion Barber and Laurence Maroney, and had the year when they upset Penn State (1999) but generally, you're only going to stick with 6-6 seasons for so long before you long for something more (especially considering how well the two geographic and traditional rivals, Iowa and Wisconsin, have fared since the early 90's). Mason wasn't going to get them there, and Brewster probably won't either, but they had Mason for 10 years...enough time to know what they were going to get.

  Non Big 10 Hotseats
  1. Dan Hawkins- Colorado. He has not recaptured the success he had at BSU. With the Buffs making the move to the P10, if he does not right the ship this year he will be gone.
  2. Lane Kiffen-USC. He has quickly earned the reputation as the "Dirtiest Player in the Game". With Pat Haden taking over at AD and with USC being penalized by the NCAA, I believe he will be looking for a new gig come next season.
  3. Ralph Friedgen- Maryland. Maryland was one of the worst teams in college football last season. They lost to William and Freaking Mary. The Fridge will be sent packing if the Terps have a repeat of last season.
  4. Mike Sherman- Texas A&M. Sherman is just holding a whistle that has been promised to Houston coach Kevin Sumlin. If Sumlin is ready to move on, Sherman will be sent packing in short order.

  Not sure how you can say Dantoni and Bilema are on a hot seat?
  
  I think Les Miles might be on the hot seat. There are just different standards in the SEC and he has kind of slipped into mediocrity. I think with a 5 loss season, people start to get really restless. (funny I just went to espn.com and the headline article is about Miles and his job security)

  I think you pretty much nailed it. It also didn't help that Minnesota would play a bunch of 1-AA schools and start out 5-0 or 6-0 and get ranked in the top 25 every year, then get into conference play and get killed by the big boys and finish with only one or two wins down the stretch.

  Exactly. His overall record was mediocre and that was with practically all non-conference gimmes. Big Ten record was 32-48 and in his last three years (immediately following the "breakthrough" 10-3 season), he didn't finish better than a tie for 6th in the conference. Didn't do anything spectacular.

  Rich Rod is gone if he wins less than 8 games this year. And by the looks of his team, it wouldn't surprise me if they lost to a bottom-feeder B10 team this year.

  Yep, Chizik is at Auburn now. Odd hire, but they seemed decent last year for stretches.

  Actually it'd be very impressive if OSU beat YSU by 8 this year since YSU isn't on Ohio State's schedule. :rolleyes:
