NOL fan"I can assure you that you"ll be proud of our young people," Tressel said to an attentive halftime crowd, "in the classroom, in the community and especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor" So there it is. A guarantee? Not really. Lockerroom material? I"ve seen better. But Tressel"s remarks certainly reveal a bit about his job objectives and they more than insinuate that he plans to leave Michigan Stadium victorious this November. What struck me was not Tressel"s lip service, but the general disregard with which it was treated at least in Ann Arbor. Even the most zealous Michigan supporters could do nothing but chuckle at the very idea of an Ohio State victory in the Big House next season. The Wolverines not only return Heisman Trophy candidate Drew Henson and an improved defensive front seven, but will also have the No. 1 incoming freshman class. Meanwhile in Columbus, recruits are abandoning a ship with a Division I rookie at the helm who has yet to hire a crew. Add the fact that Ohio State has not won in Michigan Stadium since 1987, and who could blame local newspapers for essentially burying Tressel"s comments beneath the other news of the day? Nobody around here (outside Schembechler Hall) is taking him seriously.

JoeA1010Just when you get too big for your britches, look what happens over the next decade. Talk about being humbled.
-
SQ_CraziesI suppose they should have taken him seriously. Because he was serious lol.
-
dwccrewSomeone needs to write in to the Michigan Daily and bring up this article.
SQ Crazies- I like that. You're right, they should have taken Tressel seriously. LOL, talk is cheap, good thing Tressel has backed it up. Michigan would have to win the next 7 years just to have Tressel be .500. I don't see that happening though. I don't see Michigan winning for a few years yet.
They're in more trouble than we all thought originally. I hope I just didn't insert my foot in my mouth like the Michigan Daily did! -
unique_67I still remember watching him make that comment. And, as he walked off the floor, I started laughing to myself and said "he just guaranteed a win over Michigan".
The thing is, I knew from the day he was hired that OSU would beat UM more than they would lose. I never expected it would be this lopsided, but I figured if Tressel was at OSU 10 years his teams record against UM would probably be 7-3 or 6-4.
I based this off the fact that when at YSU, "the game" from 86-95 was against Akron. YSU was 7-2-1 against Akron. And, even though Akron moved to 1A(now FCS) in 1988, YSU was 5-2-1 against Akron from 88-95.
YSU was 1-9 entering the Akron game in 1986(Tressel's 1st season at YSU). Akron, led by Gerry Faust was 7-3 and playing for an OVC title and trip to the 1AA playoffs. YSU won the game on an FG in the final minute.
In 1995, it what everybody knew was going to be the last game against Akron, YSU dominated the Zips in Akron. YSU finished 3-8 that season, with the other 2 wins coming against teams from D2. -
sleeperThis is why we keep Tressel. He will pass Woody Hayes as the GOAT Ohio State coaches.

SQ_CraziesAnyone calling for Tressel's head is just as big an idiot as they were at the beginning of the year, the end of last year, the end of the year before that, etc.
6 straight against UM, 5 straight conference titles. I'll take it. I guess some people would rather us get rid of him and pick someone else up and turn into Michigan??? -
dwccrew
I don't think we could ever turn into Michigan. I mean, we don't need to revert back to the early first half of the 20th century when referencing all of our national championships (minus the half title).SQ_Crazies wrote: Anyone calling for Tressel's head is just as big an idiot as they were at the beginning of the year, the end of last year, the end of the year before that, etc.

Yeah, since the ones you won 40+ years ago are so much more relevant? :rolleyes:dwccrew wrote:

FWIW, if all you count are consensus titles then we have 2 (1968 and 2002) and they have 2 (1902 and 1948)dwccrew wrote:

Of the 11 total they claim, 9 were shared (with 1 of the shared titles being AP and the other 8 from other polls, 7 of which were before the AP even existed)
Of the 7 we claim, 5 were shared (with 2 of the shared titles being AP, 1 being Coaches Poll and 2 being other polls) -
darbypitcher22i don't even think people in Schembechler Hall were taking him seriously at that time....

If you could follow along we were obviously not counting the recent ones, since he said we talk about the ones in the first half of the century.visionquest wrote:

You do remember Michigan won the title in 1997 right? -
NOL fanone more point about national titles....
Counting National Titles in the pre BCS era is no where near an exact science, and counting them in the pre AP poll era is even worse. For example...if you count every year that some poll has voted OSU or Michigan as the national champion, UM has 22 and OSU has 20.
Of those titles, UM claims 11, 8 of which are pre AP era and 2 of which were in one of the major polls in the AP era.
OSU claims 7, all are in the AP era, 5 of which were in one of the major polls in the AP era
btw, I won't be able to reply to anything for a few days -

I remember Nebraska winning that year too. Nebraska would've beaten UM that year.WebFire wrote:

Swamp FoxJim Tressel has proven to be a pretty decent coach and I'm really glad we have him. My hope is that he has a great finish to his career at Ohio State and goes into retirement directly from the OSU Campus! I would not trade him for any other Division 1 Head Coach in the entire country.
-
dwccrewI hope he can get at least one more national title. He has put the Bucks in position to be the national champs multiple times, we will see if they can finish it one more time.

devil1197I think next year may be a year that we could possibly get into the title game imo. Outside of Heyward and Gibson, OSU doesn't have any other young guys looking to go Pro and they only lose a handful of starters on offense and defense. Our schedule is pretty favorable with Miami, PSU, UM, and Indiana. Away games will be somewhat tough with Wisky and Iowa.
Some of the top teams now are losing their top guys with Tebow, McCoy, the Florida defense will be losing some big names. -

Wisky is scarier than Iowa. I think Iowa is going to be hurting a bit next year. OSU always has trouble with Wisky at Wisky.devil1197 wrote: I think next year may be a year that we could possibly get into the title game imo. Yeah Wisky will definitely be a tough game but its very winnable.dwccrew wrote:

dwccrew^^^I agree, just saying that we have problems with the Badgers at Camp Randall. I think every game on OSU's schedule is winnable every season. The players just need to perform well and the coaches need to put the players in position to make those plays.

Agreed.dwccrew wrote: ^^^I agree, just saying that we have problems with the Badgers at Camp Randall. I think every game on OSU's schedule is winnable every season. The players just need to perform well and the coaches need to put the players in position to make those plays.
This was the type of year I expected OSU to have. Obviously they have enough talent to win the Big Ten but I didn't think we would be able to compete for a National title just based on how young the offense was. -
dwccrew
I felt the same way. I didn't expect to win the Big 10 outright and I didn't expect to play in the Rose Bowl. The fact that we are exceeded my expectations of this season. Next season, barring too many players leaving for the draft early, I fully anticipate being a pre-season top 5 and competing for the national title all season long.devil1197 wrote:

We SHOULD NOT (but could) lose any conference games next season. -
devil1197There are only two guys that could reasonably leave early and be a good draft selection (Heyward and Gibson). The rest will all stay and no one has been mentioned to even think about jumping ship.
