Buckeye Music

  • krambman
I always love listening to great music on a Saturday morning or at a tailgate to get pumped up for a game. Besides the OSU marching band, who are some good artists or what are some good songs to play at an OSU tailgate? They can be OSU specific songs, or just good football hype songs (things like Lose Yourself by Eminem or Hells Bells by AC/DC).

One artist I love of course is Cool Ray and all of his Buckeye music. Is there anyone else out there like him? What else should I add to my Buckeye playlist for this fall?

    Seven Nation Army

Not a fan of it any time other than football season though.

Playing Seven Nation Army is such bullshit, and I personally love the song. The White Stripes got me into music when I was a kid. BUT, Ohio State didn't originate that tradition, it's Penn State's. We're better than Penn State. Not only that, but The White Stripes is from MICHIGAN. Fuck that.

I propose we belt out the chorus to this (it's live at Glastonbury so that'll give you an idea of what 100,000+ singing can be like):

Actually they play Zombie Nation at Penn State games, NOT Seven Nation Army. Thanks for playing though.

No, actually Penn State did originate the chant. Look it up.

No, actually Italian soccer fans originated it...nice try though

Well aren't you cool. Penn State used it before Ohio State, therefore it's silly to use it. But nevermind, we use Script Ohio and we didn't make that either.

Thanks for playing though. God you sound like a bitch.

Common misconception. Michigan never scripted Ohio and it was a different song.

So which marching band performed a script Ohio first? Michigan. Which marching band created "Script Ohio"? Ohio State.
We're splitting hairs at that point haha :) But it's moot, get rid of that fucking stolen tradition of singing Seven Nation Army.
  • krambman
sjmvsfscs08, you are correct, I looked it up and Penn State's band was the first to play the song at a college football game (although Zombie Nation is still their big thing, not Seven Nation Army). Although I hate the argument that since Penn State did it first no one else should be allowed to do it. In that case then only the first team to ever play We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, the Hey song, or any song for that matter at a game should be able to use it, and no one else.

And krazie45, the Michigan band actually was the first to spell "Ohio" in script, however, it was not the moving formation we know today. They marched into place and then played standing still. Ohio State invented the complex moving script they do today. And you contradicted yourself too. You said that Michigan never scripted Ohio, but that it was a different song. You are correct, Ohio State did not steal Script Ohio from the Michigan marching band, but the Michigan marching band was most certainly the first to do a scripted Ohio.

Now back to the topic at hand, any more music I should add to my Buckeye mix, or any other local bands that do OSU music I should look into?
  • sjmvsfscs08
Well we don't sing We Will Rock You or We Are The Champions every game, so it's not like it's tradition. But we sing Seven Nation Army every game and have embraced it as if it were our own (you even insinuated it briefly). Truth is Michigan, Penn State, and Purdue sing it. Do we want to be like them? In my opinion the only three schools that could sing it and have it not be ridiculous would be Penn State (they brought it over from Europe) and Michigan and Michigan State (simply because The White Stripes started in Detroit). That's right, this stupid obsession with Seven Nation Army is from a band from Michigan, that shitty state to the north, Michigan.

Besides, as a bass player who pays attention to modern rock/alt rock/indie rock, The White Stripes' music is so simple, Arcade Fire's Wake Up is just better in my opinion (and in the opinion of Indie fans across the county haha). And I love The White Stripes, Seven Nation Army is the song that got me into music.

What's soccer? Thought we were talking college football.

How did I contradict myself? Walking to a point and standing there in the formation of ohio in cursive is not "scripting" Ohio. I was referring to the actual movement in which Ohio is "scripted" as if it were being written. What Michigan did was what many bands have done which is walk to a spot and stand there. Therefore "Script Ohio" is a tradition created and maintained by Ohio State.

And what does soccer have to do with it? Because people think Penn State invented Seven Nation Army. First of all, as mentioned, their main thing is Zombie Nation. Second of all it was Italian Soccer fans that started chanting the riff to Seven Nation Army therefore Penn State students stole it off of them. Ohio State didn't originate the wave either but they do that at games. Penn State may have originated in terms of college football but Ohio State perfected it.
  • sjmvsfscs08
    Perfected it? haha GTFO

And I advise you to read the quote I posted literally off Ohio State's website:
So which marching band performed a script Ohio first? Michigan. Which marching band created "Script Ohio"? Ohio State.

Gee, you guys have really helped me find some good music to add to my Buckeye mix.

And sjm, Seven Nation Army has been a tradition at OSU for exactly one season now (the USC game last year was the first time they played it and the band didn't start playing it for at least another week). And please, never refer to OSU as "we" (I assume you were talking about OSU when saying "we" since we've been talking about the use of Seven Nation Army at OSU games) when you have a Notre Dame avatar.
  • sjmvsfscs08
I go to Ohio State. Thanks for playing though.

One year or one century, it's stupid as hell.

Actually it started in the 2008 season when Pretorious played it during kickoffs, it really caught on during the Michigan game that season and carried over into the next year.
