    Its bylaw 14.2.1 . Medical redshirts are only granted after the five/four is used up.

    The big difference here is he's paying his own way and isn't taking a scholarship. Past transgressions or not, if he can get into school (like any other student) and pay his way (like any other student), why wouldn't he be allowed? It's the same for any of us who applied, we could attend school and pay for it. The only difference is he is a great football player.

    It would be totally different if he was being courted by schools with a scholarship and was preventing someone else from getting a shot. He isn't. There's a difference.

    I think the point is that the university is not using up football scholarship money on him.

    I have no doubt that he's receiving some other sort of scholarships to offset the full cost of education.
