Izzo to Cavs?

I feel like Izzo is one of the few college coaches that has a chance to be successful for a few reasons:

    1. His system is built on scheme instead of talent
    2. He demands respect and hard work from his players
    3. His teams always play better in the "postseason"
    4. His teams play great man-to-man defense and a fast paced yet controlled open floor game. A good fit for the Cavs roster

I don't know if he wants to leave such a great situation at MSU. It does help though that he's familiar with Gilbert, his family probably wouldn't have to move being in such close proximity to Cleveland, his salary would at least double, he would leave the program in good shape going into next year, and assuming LeBron comes back he inherits a championship-caliber roster (not including any additional moves the Cavs make going forward.)

With that said I'd be surprised if he took the deal because he seems like an MSU for life guy. But as a Cavs fan I would be happy with the choice.

He is way to wired / intense to be able to deal with an 82 game schedule. I also don't see Izzo being able to deal with the ego's of the NBA. He doesn't take lightly to being lazy and going through the motions...which is exactly what goes on in the NBA on any given nite. I don't think Izzo is a good fit for NBA. And I don't see him making this move.

I agree with CBF's analysis of Izzo and his intensity not being a good fit for the NBA.

Who knows what Izzo will do if the Cavs offer to triple his salary.

It seems to be working for the Celtics doesn't it? Go through the motions of the regular season, wrap up a 'decent' seed in the playoffs, THEN play your best basketball. That is exactly what you need to do in the NBA.

And don't tell me Izzo doesn't take too lightly going through the motions...he openly admits that the Big Ten tournament is meaningless and tells his boys to take it easy/don't get hurt.

He'll only go if he's guaranteed that LeBron is staying, so if he inks a contract with the Cavs I'd start celebrating Cleveland fans.

I'd also like to say that Izzo is doing this the right way. Far too often we see coaches who deny they are leaving or even talking with another team about a job, only to tearfully announce their departure a day or two later. Izzo has stepped up and is being honest with his team that he is considering another job but hasn't made a decision yet. That's the way to do things. Lying isn't.

Really? Someone should tell that to Stan Van Gundy

    And Avery Johnson

    And Larry Brown.

^^^ Those guys are intense on occasion. Larry Brown? wtf? But not near Izzo intense nite in and nite out.

Sounds like Izzo is really thinking this through though. Rumors abound from MSU that his players are expecting him to leave based on meeting he had with team.
    We shall see...

You're a fool if you don't think Larry Brown was intense. He's calmed down a bit over the years mostly due to age, but he still gets on his players from time to time.

All coaches are intense in their own way. But if your comparing Brown and Izzo intensities..your the fool. Been watching Brown coach since he was at Kansas. No comparison in how he and Izzo go about things. Different styles.

    Former MSU player Bell comments:

    "
Milwaukee Bucks guard Charlie Bell said Izzo may have to alter his intensity when he talks to players who are making more than him and perhaps a superstar in James who would have more power.

"I've heard he's not as hard on guys as he used to be," Bell said. "He'd have to tone it down even more in the pros."

    Charlie fucking Bell? Yeah okay...

Sportsfuckinglady? Hmmm, don't remember her playing for Izzo.

On Thursday Izzo had a sit down meeting in Cleveland with Gilbert AND LeBron. A guaranteed $30 Million AND LeBron and no more cat and dog recruiting sounds very intriguing. I would think any great coach would always wonder "what if"..., if given the chance to coach LeBron and turn down the offer.

He doesn't know for certain he will be coaching Lebron. If Lebron is returning, it's a no brainer, you take the job.
  • vball10set
    I don't know why,but I've got a feeling he's going to take it--just a hunch....
  • reclegend22
If he does, and coaches LeBron and the Cavs for, say, six or seven years, that could be perfect timing for a return to college coaching in .... Durham, NC.

This will never happen, but, if Duke were to not go "in the family," it would be a probable scenario.

As good as Izzo is, I wouldn't want to watch his style night in and night out. Ugly ball, IMO. But certainly successful.

I think it would be interesting if he bolted, just to see if he could break the recent trend of unsuccessful college-to-pro coaches.

From what I read today, he's a bit worried about the Cavs relationship with Lebron right now. In the end, I don't think he ends up taking this.

Its official, he's at MSU for life

Never say never. I doubt he ever does..but he should know better then to make gaurantees.

Great to see him stay in college game though. You can't help but love Izzo and he is great for college basketball and the Big Ten.

I would have taken 6 million dollars. Guys getting old anyway. Once he was fired from the Cavs I would have just retired.
