Not sure what he will being to the team but maybe an extra body, but we'll see I guess.

I just don't understand moves like this by Matta. The dude kicks ass recruiting HS kids, yet goes out and gets another guy who is sitting on a scholarship for a wasted year and probably is a role player at best.

He has been able to bring in guys like: Oden, Conley, Cook, Koufos, Mullens, Turner, Buford, etc...

Yet keeps brining in these transfers like: Madsen, Kecman and Z. Not only do they not contibute, but you are wasting a scholarship for a year while they sit.

It's really only only complaint with Matta, other than Diebler playing time.

This is a much better move than Madsen or Kecman IMO. He obviously isn't great, but he's shown that he can hang in the ACC, and would be a guy that would be able to provide a solid 8-10 minutes a game if needed. This is a preemptive depth move in case Sullinger or Thomas are one and done. It's not going to stop Thad from doing what Thad does best and trying to land a Quincey Miller or Adonis Thomas in recruiting next year.

Lol saying he is going to be better than Madsen is like saying he actually realizes what sport he is playing the majority of the time.

I don't know anything about the kid at all though. Maybe Matta knows what he is doing though and thinks he is good enough for 5 min a game when there is foul trouble.

Is 5 minutes a game worth using 3 years of a scholarship on 2 years of play? To Matta it obviously is.

What do you mean when you say he "showed he can hang in the ACC"? The guy played 10 minutes a game and averaged 3 and 2 on an average ACC team. I wouldn't call that hanging in the ACC.

I think I read in the Dispatch that other schools he was considering were James Madison and Central Florida. Not exactly schools on the same level of OSU.

Maybe he can blog....they need someone to replace Titus

    Titus is irreplaceable.

The reality is, you need to fill a roster with bodies that can compete in practice. Its impossible to fill a 12 man roster with all 5 star recruits. Every program is going to have their 3,4 guys who are basically just that, practice players. I dont' know much about this kid, maybe he is that...maybe he isn't. But as mentioned, every team needs role/practice guys and OSU was in need of some "size" as well.

I understand that, but I just don't like the transfer idea because of them using up a scholarship on their red shirt year. Kecman and Z have been on scholarship for two years now, and what have they done to prove themselves worthy of one? I'd rather go out and get a 3 star HS kid who might have some potential and brings stability to a program as a 4 year guy.

OSU's new assistant coach recruited this kid out of high school while he(the asst. coach) was the head coach at Tulane. Maybe, Matta is just showing some trust in an assistant who may really like this kid.

I get that, I really do. But Matta was in need of some size. He obviously has been out recruiting hard and probably didn't see what you mentioned above. So just maybe this kid has something worth taking a shot at. I am disappointed in the Z and Kecman as well. Neither looks like they will ever see the floor much. We'll see if this kid pans out.

Thats pretty likely. I like that theory.

It's just hard to understand how Matta is such a great HS recruiter, solid JUCO recruiter, yet so poor at bringing in transfers. Hopefully this guy breaks the mold and actually contributes, but based on his stats, I'm hesitant to think that he's anything more than a guy to get Sullinger a water bottle.

This tells me Matta doesn't feel good about being able to land a 4-Star or better big man for the 2011 class.

The only 3-Star or better big man from Ohio in the 2011 class is Zack Price from St. Eds and he's already committed to Louisville.

    who?

    My point exactly.

First of all, its not like a coach goes out and recruits transfers. I don't believe they can be in contact unless the player contacts the school first . Secondly, its rare that any kind of big time talent ever transfers. Typically, its a guy who goes someplace, doesnt' see the floor..thinks the grass is greener elsewhere. Well, there is usually a reason they don't see the floor at their previous school. They just arn't that good. IMO, if you can get a transfer, and at some point, he can contribute off the bench as a good role player...then it worked out for all involved. Anything more then that is icing on the cake.

I don't know about that. Interestingly enough, 5 of the 30 1st round picks in this past draft were transfers, including 2 of the top 6. In today's game, with scholarship limits and the expansion of D-1 basketball (and also, the rules about being able to transfer after completing undergrade studies without sitting out and other reasons without sitting out), transfers are more common, and many of them have an impact.

A lot of kids transfer for other reasons than because they didn't see the floor or didn't get PT. The last 4 or 5 years you could make a pretty damn good 2-deep of kids who left schools for equal or better schools and who left for different reasons than what you mentioned above.

I don't disagree with why this kid may have been brought in, but anymore, transfers can be a huge tool for some coaches. Someone like Rick Stansbury at Mississippi State has done great in this area over the past decade.

Good valid points. But still don't think its the norm. And your right, its not just about lack of PT. Coaching changes and other things do happen.
But again, a coach can't recruit "transfers" until the kid contacts the school. So you can't blame a coach for not bringing in "top ranked" transfers.
