Boise State Reportedly to the Mountain West Conference

Just past the 2:20 mark.
This significantly strengthens the MWC's bid for AQ status. Of course, this could all change subject to expansion of the PAC10/B12 etc. -
goosebumpsAlready been taken down Danny, I'll see if I can find another source.

SykotykWould be a good move by the MWC and Boise State. BSU needs out of the WAC.
Plus, the MWC is turning into a great 'slightly below BCS' conference with teams that can jump up year to year and play with anyone.

3reppomThis might turn out to be pretty bad timing for Boise to make this move. If/when the PAC 10 goes to 12 they will do it by raiding either one or two of the Mountain Wests flagship institutions in Utah and/or BYU and the Mountain West will lose nearly all of their cache in the process..

Utah and Colorado seems to be what people say for that (Colorado probably hinges upon if half of their division in the Big 12 bolts for the Big Ten)3reppom wrote: This might turn out to be pretty bad timing for Boise to make this move. SageDon't know why either of them wouldn't want to do this.

As it is right now both parties would want to. But with such potential seismic shifts coming in the sport it would be bad for Boise to do anything right now, not when there is a more than reasonable chance that they could be jumping onto a sinking ship.Sage wrote: Don't know why either of them wouldn't want to do this. -
jordo212000This would be a good move for Boise

krambmanI've been saying for a while now that is Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, TCU, Utah, and BYU all got together and added Houston and a few more teams that they would be a very formidable conference. Not the history of some of the Big East schools, but it would be hard to argue against them not being an automatic qualifier for the BCS and the Big East still having auto status.
My feeling is that if the super conference thing ends up happening that we'll likely see these schools band together for form at least a 12 team conference if not the fifth super conference. They would likely add the two current BCS schools that get left out in the cold in the super conference realignment. -

Bam. BCS Conference. -
SykotykBut if the PAC-10 got Colorado and Utah, that would basically be swapping Boise State for Utah.
next in line, would be what would happen to the remaining Big 12 schools in regard to the MWC.
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Baylor
And in all likelihood, if that were to happen, UT/TAMU/OU would probably bolt which would cause the Big 12 to probably dissolve into the MWC and C-USA. -

The Big XII has too many big names to implode and the Pac-10 isn't going to add any teams that aren't currently in BCS conferences. Currently there are 66 BCS schools between the six BCS conferences and Notre Dame. When we have four super conferences there will only be 64 BCS teams. That means two school get left out. No conference is going to add any schools that aren't current BCS schools because that would force more current schools out.Sykotyk wrote: But if the PAC-10 got Colorado and Utah, that would basically be swapping Boise State for Utah.

Having big names in the Big 12 does nothing to guarantee its survival post expansion, not with a shitty TV contract and uneven distribution of money/power towards Texas and Oklahoma. The Big 12 is not a natural set up in the way that the SEC, Big 10 and PAC 10 are. The right overtures coming from those conferences would be enough to tear the whole thing apart.krambman wrote:

SykotykI love how you argue the PAC-10 would never go after a non-BCS school, yet their #1 target has been Utah, which is in the rather lucrative Salt Lake City market. Also, don't forget, a lot of mormons live from California to Wyoming. Then through in Colorado (Denver market), and you've increased the PAC-10's marketability quite a bit. Maybe they'll go with their own TV network the way the Big Ten has done.
Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, Salt Lake City, and Denver. Pretty good dominance of the western part of the country.
I still only think Colorado will jump if Nebraska jumps. Colorado would be out on an island (Colorado and Nebraska are rivals, if only mostly one-way).
It all hinges on the Big Ten. No other conference will take the 'mega conference' leap until they see the Big Ten do it.
And they all expect the Big Ten to do it.

ts1227ESPN just announced the MWC will NOT expand
They're citing the uncertainty of the other conferences.

the_systemNot yet.
I have no doubts they want Boise St, but if universities like Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa State, and Kansas State are potentially left over from the scrum, they would want to add them first. Good idea on thier part. -
SykotykI could easily see the MWC going after Kansas and Kansas State if they're left out after the apocalypse. Who knows, Iowa State and Baylor may wind up there as well. That leaves Boise State a good football school left out in the lurch.
MOUNTAIN
San Diego State
Wyoming
Utah
BYU
New Mexico
UNLV

Colorado State

Kansas

Baylor
That would take them to 13 schools, and the addition of Boise State would fit well into the western half. 7/7
Would make a decent conference.

Emmett BrownESPN just said that Colorado might join the MWC.

enigmaaxWonder how shitty Utah and Colorado are going to feel pretty soon. They went from being the two schools moving to the Pac 10 to being left out while SIX others go. Stupid Texas legislature.
I would think some type of merging between the MWC and remnants of the Big XII will benefit the top MWC teams when it comes to the BCS, though. If the talk is true about Notre Dame being the one and only Big Ten addition, even if half the Big XII goes to the Pac 10, Nebraska (more than anyone else) isn't going to be left without BCS potential. Those six will pick up teams like Utah, BYU(?), TCU, probably even Boise State, etc. and get right back to at least 12 teams and keep the auto bid. -
SykotykYeah, Utah/Colorado are definitely experiencing a pretty shitty turn of events.
I still don't see how the Texas legislature can care that Baylor stay with Texas/Tech/A&M, when they made no requirements when the SWC fell apart for the other schools. What's so special about Baylor that they get to be 'a big boy' when to me they're nothing better than TCU, SMU, Houston, Rice, or UTEP.

goosebumpsWhen I think Baylor I think bottom of BCS schools
Right there with Indiana, Duke, Washington State, and Iowa State -

because at the time Baylor was coming off back to back bowl seasons in 91 and 92 while looking poised for a longer run of success, they had an aggressive and powerful university president and numerous allies in the state legislature. -
jordo212000Kansas is getting a little emotional about this whole thing. They sent Nebraska and Missouri a strongly worded letter to try and keep the Big 12 together. Can you imagine the day where Kansas basketball is in the Mountain West conference? haha That is going to be a tough pill to swallow. They should never lose a game in most years

I'm not sure why it is the case now, but a couple of things I recall about the original disbanding of the SWC:
Texas had explored going to the Big 8 on its own. Texas A&M was getting set to make a move to the SEC. A couple Senators and others with influence (one of them was the House Appropriations Committee who dealt directly with university budgets) AND ties to Baylor and Texas Tech got together with the Lt Gov and reps from Texas and A&M to plot a move together. Basically, Baylor and TT were going to be screwed if the big dogs went their own ways, so they got proactive, backed themselves with major pull in the state, and rode some coattails.
It didn't have anything to do with how "good" the teams were, but rather, it was about who had the most power to take care of their own. -

Exactly. My alma mater, Rice, got screwed because we didn't have the political pull. We're still bitter about the way the SWC disbanded.
