  If the Big Ten expands by one: Zero-to-minimal impact.
  
  Whether the “one” is Rutgers or Missouri/Nebraska, there isn’t much in the way of a ripple effect.
  
  The Big 12 would probably look to Arkansas or TCU to replace Missouri/Nebraska.
  
  End of story.
  
  If the Big Ten expands by three but Notre Dame is not involved: Minimal-to-moderate impact.
  
  Even if Nebraska and Missouri both bolt for the Big Ten, the SEC holds firm and the Big 12 survives because of its anchor, Texas.
  
  And if the Big 12 remains intact, the Pac-10 probably does, too.
  
  If the Big Ten expands by three or five and Notre Dame is involved: Major impact.
  
  A 16-team Big Ten that includes Notre Dame would force the SEC’s hand. It might look to Miami and Florida State, but the money is with Texas.
  
  At that point, Texas is forced by revenue concerns — the Big 12 would be a distant third behind the Big Ten and SEC — to consider its options.
  
  Would the UT regents want to partner with the second-class academic schools in the SEC, or join the Pac-10?
  
  (Imagine the SEC with Miami, Florida State and Texas.)
  
  Bottom line I: At this point, Notre Dame appears to be the difference between a moderate and major restructuring of the landscape.
  
  Shocking, I know.
  
  The Irish joining the Big Ten is the only way, from what I’ve gathered, that the SEC makes a major move and Texas feels compelled to bolt the Big 12 (and a revenue distribution model that tilts toward Austin).
  
  Which means that the Irish joining the Big Ten is the only path that leads to Texas — and presumably Texas A&M — possibly joining the Pac-10.
  
  And then we’re talking about a Pac-14 with the Texas schools, Utah and Colorado.
  
  Bottom line II: Expect more expansion rumors in the coming weeks as the Big Ten and Pac-10 CEOs prepare for their annual meetings next month. (The Pac-10 gathering is in San Francisco, the Big Ten in Chicago.)

  I agree because I think that having divisions and a championship game is one of the biggest jokes in sports. That being said, the conference is losing money by not having a championship game. At some point they would be forced to add at least one more team and have a title game, so instead of being behind the curve, they are creating the curve.
  
  Ewok, I disagree with some of what that writer said. The Pac-10 is also looking into expansion, so even if the Big Ten were to only add one team, the Pac-10 would also still expand to 12 teams at some point in the near future, and at that point the Big East wouldn't be able to stay relevant as a football conference with 4 less teams than the rest of the BCS conferences so they would find some way to expand to 12 teams also. The reason I think that Notre Dame will ultimately accept the Big Ten's invitation is because if they don't and the Big Ten still ends up at 16 there will be no good fit for ND anywhere else. Most Big Xii teams will look west to the Pac-10 and the Big East and ACC will combine after several ACC teams get absorbed into the SEC. Even if the Big Ten only expands to 14 teams now, it's still very likely that another conference will move to 16 teams at some point in the near future, forcing the Big Ten to add two more teams at that point to keep up.
  
  As far as the four teams mentioned are concerned, I'd be thrilled if all four were added. Even though no one in New York really cares about Rutgers athletics or college sports in general, it's likely that adding them would get the Big Ten Network on basic cable in New York and New Jersey and that's 15+ million new BTN subscribers. That's a HUGE monetary boost for the conference and it would put them and keep them well ahead of the other conferences for TV revenue.

  I have a hard time seeing all four of those schools agreeing to move to the SEC. I understand the money issue, and ultimately that may get all four to do it, but I don't think that the football coaches would be very happy because of how hard it would be year in and year out to win that conference. It would be interesting to see if the AD's at the top SEC schools at that point would change their expectations and be happy with division titles since conference titles and National Championships would become harder to come by. Also, adding those four schools could make it hard and hard to SEC teams to make the National Championship game because of how unlikely it would be for anyone from the conference to go undefeated.

  I also disagree that the B10 needs UK. Football wise it brings nothing and bball, I highly doubt Kentucky leaves. Adolph would roll in his grave.
  
  The B10 also dones't need a conference game. Sure they are not making money off the "big league" title games, but it is not killing the conference. Bowl matchups are not hurting too badly, and B10 are not getting looked over for national title games.
  
  I just don't see the need for the B10 to expand, nor for any other conference to expand or retract. I like college football the way it is. There is no need for teams to switch conferences for money to me.
