1) Tradition, plan and simple
2) BOWLS give a chance for bowl eligible teams geet one last win on the year!!
3) More teams get involed with bowls than playoffs
4) every other sport has a playoff, so be different!
5) Sponsership, bowls get sponsership!!!! WHICH what does sponsership mean?!

I'd love to see the playoff system.
But bcause of the money involved, you won't see it.
You've got too many .500 and 1 game over .500 teams @ 6-6 and 7-5 making it into the postseason as it is now -

That doesn't mean we need a playoff, just a lot fewer bowls. -

thats true, but we need the playoff to get rid of this BCS bullshit. This year would be the perfect year. let's all see how Cincy, Boise, and TCU would have squared off against Florida, Bama and Texas

BCSbunkA playoff is coming. Not sure exactly when but it will come. The BCS is illogical nonsense and teams and their fans are getting the short end of the stick and they know it. The money will stop as the murmurs turn into deafening roars of a playoff.
For those that wonder why the BCS or a ranking system is self defeating and illogical. I will explain.
Ranking that is what they base this system on ranking by both humans and computers feed with human bias and information but that is not where the total problem lies.
What is ranking and how is it determined? A proper ontology of ranking seems in order or what comprises ranking.
Ranking seems to be comprised of a few factors. Record, Strength of schedule and last years rankings perhaps there are more but this is enough to illustrate the fact that it is illogical and a terrible way to determine a champion.
Well lets rank the teams. It starts in the preseason and they are ranked arbitrarily from the previous years results which do not necessarily equate the ranking is correct to get the two right teams in the title game but that is how they begin with the preseason poll.
Ranking is also comprised of strength of schedule or who you played. So then how is strength of schedule determined? Or in other words how do you know which team is better than another to accurately say that team X' schedule is better than team Y's schedule?
Well of course you use the teams ranking. Well that fails logically what do we do first? First we rank the teams but we need strength of schedule to help us determine the final ranking.
So then we check out the strength of schedule but we need proper rankings in order to do a SOS.
Well which do we do first? Ranking? You cannot because you need SOS to help you determine it. The SOS shall be determined, well you cannot do that because we don't have rankings to determine SOS.
Round and round we go it is called circular reasoning and that is the BCS is failure at giving us a real champion but instead we are offered a beauty contest and those two play to determine who is crowned BCS champion.
Beauty pageant is the best analogy that there is for the BCS. Young woman parade around and are voted on by others as to who is prettiest and who has the best talent and who has the best answers to their questions.
A beauty pageant style system to determine a football champion. Wow that is definitely a loser of a system.
I just hope that all the undefeated teams stay that way that way the fans of teams like Cincinnati, TCU, Boise St can really feel the sting that their beauty queen was not voted as prettiest. It is the only way a playoff will get demanded is by fans of undefeated teams earned nothing in terms of a championship for no other reason than arbitrary ones.
When the fans get tired of being led astray by an illogical system the cry for a playoff will be deafening -

Wow that sounds like incoherent rambling. BCS is not tradition. At all. You can keep the bowl system and add a playoff on top of it. The teams that don't make the playoff can play in the lower bowls. -

NCAA basketball has the NIT along with the NCAA.
Why couldn't football keep the bowl games as the 2nd tier to the playoffs?
If you had an 8 team playoff, that would be 4+2+1 = 7 games right there. You're telling me that 7 playoff games wouldn't earn more money than the bottom 10-12 bowl games (that should be eliminated anyways)?
Playoffs work for every other sport. Even other divisions of college football. It really wouldn't be that hard to implement. -
