Former OSU Guard Walter Offut to Indiana???
-
Laley23He is down to Ohio and Indiana. He would be scholarship at OU, but because of Big Ten transfer rules would have to walk on at IU.
I was going to post this early last week, but I couldnt get anything concrete from anyone I talked too. Finally have a transcript of an interview from late last night (courtesy of Mike Pegram).
It is really between two schools right now. I will probably make my decision here in the next week or so. I need to get ready for summer school or whatever I need to do with that process. So I will probably announce in the next week or so.
John Groce recruited me when he was at Ohio State, I have a really long player-coach type relationship with him. Probably one of the best coaches as far as recruiting me. So that is a good benefit to Ohio.
As far as not so good they play in the MAC and I honestly think I am capable of playing at the highest level, like when I was recruited out of high school. I just really haven't had a chance to show that I can play at the highest level yet. I want to play at the highest level so that is going to factor into my decision.
Right now I have been through a couple transfers and it is time to think about myself a little bit. At IU Tom Crean is a great coach who has always proved himself. Coming back to my home state, if I choose to go there, there's a lot of people I know there at IU. A lot of friends. The academic support staff there is run by Marni Mooney and she was at Warren Central with me when I came to high school. It's the Big Ten, I'm used to that conference, I'm used to the arenas, the way of life in the Big Ten. There are a lot of benefits to going to IU. Right now I am leaning towards IU.
SIDE NOTE: Indiana is also the leading contender for Emmanuel Negedu, the former Tennessee player who had to stop playing because of a heart problem. UT wont let him back on the team despite every doctor clearing him. Currently Indiana is weighing the options they have and the risk they run of letting a kid play with a heart condition. -
Laley23Here is a link regarding Negedu. Im really not sure if I even want Emmanuel on IU. In fact, I know that I dont.

charliehustle14I thought Offut was at Wright State and was going to play there as well.

SportsAndLadyCome to OU!!

I really think it is going to come down to the scholarship issue. I think it is VERY clear he wants Indiana and to prove he can play at this level etc. But, having to pay your way is a pretty tough thing to do when you can go fro free...SportsAndLady wrote: Come to OU!!
Stay tuned, decision coming soon. -
sportchamppsWhat year will he be?

After Brownell left there was talk that Offut may get out as well, not sure how that affects his eligibility though, since he did enroll at Wright State.charliehustle14 wrote: I thought Offut was at Wright State and was going to play there as well. -

In "about a week or so". Assuming he isnt like Marquis Teague, Id expect a decision by May 3rd.SportsAndLady wrote: Whens he gonna pick laley? -
Azubuike24Negedu is a good kid. Indiana should definitely take him.

dont disagree with the first part. Problem is that 2012 in Indiana has probably 10 of the top 100 kids in the country, if not more (rankings wont show it, but my personal feeling is such). If we take Negedu (and another) we could be looking at a 2 man class for that year instead of 4. IU sits VERY well with Hanner Perera, D'Shaun Smith-Rivera, Ron Patterson, and Peter Jurkin (and pretty well with AJ Hammons.....all 5 are currently or will be 5 stars, bank on it. Not to mention Kevin "Yogi" Ferrel who was 3rd team AA for SO this year.Azubuike24 wrote: Negedu is a good kid. Indiana should definitely take him.
I just REALLY want a 4 man class, ALL FROM INDIANA, for 2012. All 4 players we would get would benefit IU more than Negedu...and that is really saying a lot, because I agree he is a great talent. -
centralbucksfanI was very disappointed to see Offut leave OSU, to be honest. I really thought if he would have stuck it out, he would have seen the floor this past year. But like many, he didn't have the patience. By all accounts, he is a good kid and will be a good addition to either IU or OU. He'll never be a great player. But very good defensively. Not so great offensively. Be a good role player. Bit surprised by all of this..I thought he had made his choice and was attending another school by now??

He was, he was enrolled at Wright State for spring quarter which wouldve made him eligible to play in all of WSUs games next year except like one.centralbucksfan wrote: I was very disappointed to see Offut leave OSU, to be honest. Oh, I agree. But even there, he isn't going to be lighting the world in fire. He has his limitations offensively. But he would be great addition to OU.SportsAndLady wrote:

Laley23Sorry S&L,
Looks like Offutt to Indiana per a financial aid package. Guess you have to pray for that to fall through now

The same can be said about Eric Wallace and Anthony Crater. Wallace was a starter at Depaul this past season.centralbucksfan wrote: I was very disappointed to see Offut leave OSU, to be honest. There was a coaching change at Wright State. And Walter has made it very clear that he did not get along at all with the replacement.
The other school Walter is and was looking at is OHIO. Where he could get a scholarship. But he is concerned about the coaching stability there also.
Coaching stability is an on going concern of Walter's... it seems. He just recently stated the only reason he did not go to IU in the first place was he was concerned about what was going on with Sampson at the time.
Water's mom is supposed to be at IU this weekend to see what financial plans are available to him. And if he gets one that is acceptable to him, he says he will be walking on in the fall. At that time, IU will see if he can be cleared to play the second semester of the upcoming season, or sit out for an entire year, which will leave him with 2.0 years left of eligibility. -
Laley23Well, it appears Ohio just needed him to get on campus. Walter was visiting this weekend and word is he has already pulled the trigger for the Bobcats.

thedynasty1998Probably a smarter choice than Indiana, where he probably wouldn't get as much playing time

Probably, but lets not overvalue the talent on Indiana's roster lol. This was purely a financial decision.thedynasty1998 wrote: Probably a smarter choice than Indiana, where he probably wouldn't get as much playing time -

Ya, I was gonna say....Offut would have certainly gotten plenty of time at IU.Laley23 wrote:
