Matta adds ex Tulane coach to staff

  • centralbucksfan
Dave Dickerson will replace Alan Major who recently took the Charlotte head coaching job. Dickerson recently resigned as Tulane head coach. Prior to this, he was an asst. with Maryland and Gary Williams for 9yrs and was given much credit for recruiting some of the better players that Maryland has. Looks like a great addition to the staff and will only bolster recruiting even more then it already is.

Will this mean Buckeye fans should expect some east coast players on OSU's roster?

Not sure if I like this hire. He was a D1 head coach who couldn't cut it and is taking a step back down. Now I understand that that isn't necessarily a bad thing as some coaches are better cut out as assistants, but I always like the thought of bringing someone in who is climbing the ladder, rather than someone on their way down.

Also, Maryland is known for recruiting JUCO's and inner city kids, not necessarily the style that Matta seems to prefer.

First of all, he was at Tulane during the time Katrina hit. They litterally had to move out of that area. That alone would be cause for a very difficult situation to deal with as a head coach. Not only directly, but indirectly in terms of recruiting kids to come to a city that was destroyed. Pretty much a no win situation there.
And as you mentioned, some guys are better off as asst. coaches. During his time at Maryland, they were VERY successful, winning a title, another final four as well.
And whats wrong with inner city kids? Where do you think some of the best players in the country are? Juco..who knows. I'd like to see this verified. I mean Matta has brought in, out of need some Juco players as well. Not an uncommon thing to be honest.
As far as climbing the latter...I disagree. I'd rather have a stable staff, experienced staff that isn't look to leave at the first opportunity. Young guys tend to be that way wanting to move up. Some of the best staffs in the country are stable experienced ones, ala Duke and UNC to name a couple.

I get what you're saying. As long as Matta's at the helm, I have confidence in him to get it done with the coaching staff. I was just a little surprised by this hire, but maybe it does get Matta into some doors that he wasn't able to before.

That is what I am hopeful of. I know he is recruting a few guys from the east coast and south currently. Dickerson being a grad of Maryland, along with an asst for 9yrs, I am sure has some very good ties/contacts in those areas.

I've known Dave Dickerson for over 15-years and have worked with him at Maryland. He's a quality guy and a good coach. He and Billy Hahn recruited some great players for the Terps, guys who weren't necessarily blue chip players but nonetheless became great college players (Lonnie Baxter and Juan Dixon to name a couple). As Bucksfan noted, he suffered some horrible luck with Katrina hitting when it did. Great hire for Matta.

Hey coach, after reading your post I just realized who Dickerson is. I was only there for one year of Maryland camp but he did seem like a great guy.
