NCAA new rules changes; eye black, wedge, and taunting penalties.

Who the fuck ever said that College Athletics are supposed to be fun. Did you just make that up.?KnightRyder wrote: i'm not one for taunting, but its a game its supposed to be fun. maybe the ncaa just wants a bunch of robots.
Fun happens when you work hard for a goal and win. You can also have fun when you know you have given everything, and end up on the losing end of a game.
Taunting an opposing player should never be considered fun. Jackass/punk mentality at it's finest. -

Figures they would institute this AFTER Tebow graduates. This would have been nice to save us all from his Bible thumping.Mr Pat wrote: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5092774
Article is there, pretty big changes, never saw anything wrong with the eye black messages though... The big one is if you taunt someone on the way to the endzone, you get a flag and it's now a spot foul and they take away the touchdown. Thoughts? -
CinciX12The taunting penalties are just about the definition of e.x.c.e.s.s.i.v.e.

I don't have a religious bone in my body, but Reggie Bush's dumbass messages were much more annoying than Tebow's Bible verses. At least I could have looked up the Bible verses had I given a flying fuck...Scarlet_Buckeye wrote:

But then, of course OSU fans are going to think it's a Tebow conspiracy -
darbypitcher22the eye black rule I could care less about.
I hate the elimination of the wedge.
The taunting rule, absolutely rediculous. You know you're going to have some officials go completely overboard with it -

It wont ruin ANY games next year. The rule doesnt go into place until 2011.ohiotiger33 wrote: Wow, that celebration rule is completely fucked and I guarantee it will ruin at least one game next year.
Since when is taunting an emotion? Showing emotions would be getting excited and celebrating with your teammates. Taunting is nothing but trying to show another player or team up. NOTHING about taunting is an emotion0311sdp wrote: You've pointed out exactly why this is a dumb rule, people love football because of the emotion, quit trying to ruin the game.
If you read the article it says that they tried to match the rule to EVERY OTHER live ball rule which was enforced at the spot of the foul. Taunting was the only penalty you could get flagged for and still go on to score. The rule was changed to be consistent with all other live ball penalties.bigkahuna wrote: I saw on ESPN that the rule is BEFORE the player scores.
Does this mean that a player could still taunt after the TD has been called.
I guess the question is did the taunt/flag get thrown before or after the goal line was crossed?
Exactly. For all the people saying that this will ruin a game, you are wrong. What would ruin the game is the idiot player who knows the rule but still chooses to taunt on the way to the end zone. If you are on the way for a game winner with no time on the clock and you feel like you have to taunt...run into the end zone first then do whatever childish idiotic taunting act you feel like you have to do. You would still win the game that way (you may suck at life, but youwould win the football game).Ghmothwdwhso wrote:
Don't taunt, and just run into the endzone and there will be no problem.
I am still baffled by why everyone feels like taunting is a good thing for football. There is no place for it. Celebrate with your team and dont try to demean the other team. Where is the respect for the other players who go through all the same hard work as you? -

Agreed with everything you wrote, Darby, outside of the common misspelling.darbypitcher22 wrote: the eye black rule I could care less about.

The taunting rule, absolutely ridiculous. You know you're going to have some officials go completely overboard with it
I like the wedge. Sure the removal is some sort of safety measure, but how many injuries occur when someone on the kickoff team runs into the wedge? I'm positive that it doesn't happen as often as an injury from a standard tackle.
What's the next rule? No Kickoffs? :@ -
Red_Skin_PrideI see no one has responded to my situation above. Pretty typical.

SonofanumpWhat did you want responded to?
By the time this is instituted, we will all know what is unsportsmanlike and what is not. -
purple_reinksig hit it all perfectly on the head.
This is a great rule for college football as long as "taunting" is clearly defined. To me, it should mean any thing directed at an opposing player, coach, or fan.
It also makes sense since every other penalty that is called before a score is assessed from the spot. -

It only makes sense if you argue that diving into the end zone, slowing down to point to the stands or whatever else a ref might throw the flag on provides an unfair advantage for the player attempting to advance the ball across the goal line, which it doesn't. Holding, Clipping, a block in the back or offensive pass interference fit the criteria because those are fundamental parts of a play. Running with an outstretched arm pointing towards the sky isn't, and shouldn't be viewed or penalized in the same light. This rule is going to be a clusterfuck because it is not that clearly delineated and leaves far to much at the discretion of the referees. We are going to see a lot more end of game scenarios like LSU at Goergia last year which had two of the worst celebration penalties I have ever seen in the span of about 5 minutes. Only this year those flags are going to take points of the board and cost someone a game.purple_rein wrote: ksig hit it all perfectly on the head.

SpeedofsandWhy is it no one ever complains how much the refs suck in spring scrimmage games ?
-
cats gone wildThey need to do away with the "light" excessive celebration penalties. The Washington/Wash St was a fine example a couple years ago. The LSU/Georgia game was a prime example last year. A "tiny" little celebration changed the impact of the games.(hope I got the right teams)

If you are talking about the Locker toss I think that was against BYUcats gone wild wrote: They need to do away with the "light" excessive celebration penalties. Thanks, WSU came up on my mind because of them going into OT and it was a close game. But, yeah, I was referring to the Locker toss.3reppom wrote:

SpeedofsandHere is a little quote about the eye black...Tebow gave a speech at Lipscomb in Tenn. last night.
He told the story about changing the bible verse under his eyes for the National Championship game his junior year before they played Oklahoma. He had been wearing a Phil. verse ALL season, but was feeling that God was telling him to change it to John 3:16 for the NC game. He said Meyer kind of "freaked" out about the change being a bit superstitious of course. But he did it, and we won...and 2 days later Coach Meyer called him up and said "Tim, did you know that since the game, over 94 million people have googled the verse John 3:16...? to which Tebow replied..."What...?? I can't believe 94 million people didn't know John 3:16..." -
cats gone wildWhat can the eye black hurt? Nothing. Most players usually had their team names on their eye black or their area code. No big deal. The only controvecy I can remember was with Pryor.
Thats a cool story about Tebow. He didnt force it on anyone, they looked it up themselves.
