Most Overrated Teams and Conferences

  • Little Danny
People like to throw out the word "overrated" regarding certain teams and conferences. This writer put together a nice piece where using statistical analysis to determine which teams and conferences are overrated (and underrated).

The link isn't working for me.

You have to copy and paste the whole link from the address bar Danny, not the abbreviated one from other forums.

Fixed----- sorry about that. I just switched over from a PC to a Mac. Still learning...

As a whole, that was weak. His formula lacks any form of weighting system. Moving form #25 to #15 isn't nearly as good as being #4 to #1.

Although I will say Notre Dame went from underrated/overrated on an annual basis. People either thought they were terrible and they ended up with a surprising season or thought they'd contend for a title and they shit their pants.

1998: 9-3.....This new coach is awesome!
1999: 5-7.....Bob Davie was supposed to be awesome!
2000: 9-3....Oh Jesus Notre Dame is indeed awesome!
    2001: 5-7....Oh Notre Dame sucks..
2002: 10-3....Tyrone Willingham is the greatest coach in history.
    2003: 5-7......Oh, maybe not.
    2004: 6-6......Wow we really sucks.
2005: 9-3.....wait they didn't lose their first six games?
2006: 10-3.....yeah they were supposed to win a title wtf.
2007: 3-9.....Charlie Weis isn't the best coach in America.

...and it goes on and on. Notre Dame isn't the most overrated, they're the most incorrectly rated team.

    This formula is so retarded.

Essentially all the big time programs are going to be overrated because they can only go down, and can't move up as much. Whereas all the programs that suck COCK like UC, rarely ever start in the top 25, so they can only move up and accumulate points that way.
  • mallymal614
So pretty much any program that is relevant is Overrated?
  • Little Danny
Yes but don't you have to be "rated" in order to be overrated? I mean if a team is unrated and through the course of the season work their way up to the rankings, how can you say they were overrated? Likewise, if a team is traditionally rated high but each year they never reach expectations, they obviously they are "over"rated.

    If a team is rated 4th pre-season and end up 5th they're overated....hmmm

Tell ya what Danny, nevermind that bullshit formula that guy stayed awake too many nights to come up with, just to show that the Big East is underated...just come here for all you over/underated needs. We gots the pulse of a nation cross sampled... balee dat

LOL you're the first person to bring the Big East into this. The guy who wrote this is from Seattle. Not sure who teaches geography in Youngstown, but Seattle is about as far away from the Big "EAST" as you can get.

C'mon goose, it's not exactly Sherlock Holmes type detective work to figure out why Danny posted this obscure shit lol.
  • goosebumps
That may be why Danny posted it, but I'm willing to bet the bank that thats not why the author did it.

I'd bet the bank the author did it for the same reason Danny is thinking...somehow justifying respect for schools/conferences that don't get any.

Ytown, my thread was not to prop up the BE or any other conference. I did not interject BE or UC conversation into this at all. I seriously just wanted to put up an article with some type of methodology. The first person to mention UC was Sleeper with his regular flame and the second was you. Quite interesting, do you guys have some type of UC Derangement Syndrome or something?
  • ytownfootball
Sorry Danny, chalk it up to slow off season I guess. It's not like you haven't had a history of UC/Big East knob slobbin', and this just fits in perfectly with your usual agenda. ;)

    LOL no.

You put this thread up because it shows UC in a good light, we aren't naive dumbshit.

Enjoy your season, maybe you'll win a bowl game this year.

As a Buckeye fan, saying that Florida is one of the top 15 most overrated, makes me laugh uncontrollably. How do fucks like this have a job?
  • krambman
You can't fault the guys method because it is certainly sound. Preseason ranking (expectation) versus final ranking (reality). The difficult thing with these types of lists are that the top teams are always going to appear the most overrated because they will appear in the most polls and will consistently have the higher expectations. Teams that are ranked in the top 10 every year are more likely to end up "overrated" by the end of the season, while teams ranked 15-25 every year are going to have a better change of being underrated because they have more room to move up. You really need some kind of weighting system I think, because if you start out the season ranked #1 you can only end up overrated if you don't win it all. If you start out #15 and finish in the top ten you were underrated. I think it's a good system but I think it's hard to evaluate overrated vs. underrated since the teams at the top have less of a chance to move up and be underrated. Honestly, I'd rather be overrated most years because it means you're being ranked high every year and you're probably being successful as a program.
  • trackandccrunner
Somehow I knew Florida State was going to be the most overrated. I love it how hes says they only finished with a higher rating 3 times but didn't mention they had the same rating 5 times and twice they started and finished #1. When you start in the top 10 14 out of 20 years and 13 of those years are in the top 5 obviously your probably going to drop a little bit. Just think out of those 13 times they started in the top 5 only twice did they not finish in the top 5. Im sure all of these teams that are underrated would love to have been "overrated" like FSU apparently was.
  • Sonofanump
LSU and Auburn should be up there, falling from top 10 preseason to unranked at years end.

This list doesn't account for many variables, one example being injuries. For instance, of course Oklahoma was ranked #5 last year. What happens? Bradford goes down with a season injury, and then again, and your result is an inexperienced QB leading a team (and falling out of the top 25). And yes... one player CAN make a team. We have all seen it before (e.g., Bo Jackson, Maurice Clarett, Vince Young, Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, etc.)
