Crawford and Bassett to declare for Draft.

Dont kill me, but per my sources (I know, I know) at Indiana these two former Hoosiers are set to declare for the draft. No link on Bassett, but Ill keep digging.

    Crawfords link:

Yeah, a few of us had mentioned the Bassett declaring thing on an OU/MAC-related thread. I think he's probably going overseas, but if he can get an NBA contract, he'll take that first. I guess his family is poor and his mom couldn't get to Providence to watch his two tournament games because she has to work two jobs, so he's going to try to parlay his great MAC tournament and game against Georgetown into whatever he can to improve matters at home.

Wow. I am really surprised that Bassett is leaving. Doesn't seem like a good decision at all. I'm no expert but I kind of doubt he'll get drafted IMO and now he will have to resort to playing overseas.

Bassett isn't going pro to play in the NBA.

He is going pro to play overseas so he can make money for his family, who has lived in the shitter his whole life.

It is a shame, but at the same time you wish these guys would think things through a little bit. Instead of only thinking about playing pro ball, why doesn't he focus on getting a college degree while at the same time working to improve his stock (whether it be in the NBA or overseas). Then he could have the best of both worlds... once his playing days end he can actually get a decent job.

K, well when your parents and siblings are living in a shack, and you have the option of playing in Europe for a LOT of money...wouldn't you take it? Or would you tell your family "hey guys, just wait one more year, then i'll get you out of there!"

And why the hell would he think about getting a degree when he can make a very good living playing basketball?
  • thedynasty1998
The degree argument is just stupid now-a-days. He'll get paid more for playing basketball than he ever will with a degree. And who says he can't go back later in life and get a degree in that's something that he feels is needed.

I think this may become more and more regular, guys leaving school early not necessarily for the NBA, but for a "pro career" wherever that may be. If a guy is willing to go over water and make money, go for it. College will always be there.

    Easy hoss.

How much would a guy like Bassett earn over in Europe? Obviously he should do what is best for his family. I was just making the point that countless people throughout the United States graduate with a degree and improve the lives of themselves and their families. My point was that Bassett could work on improving his stock for either the NBA or perhaps an overseas team (get more money from them) by coming back, playing at OU again and getting a free education.

A friend I know played basketball at Wooster, a division 3 college, and got a contract in some European country I can't even remember where...he's making 6 figures. So I'm gonna go ahead and say Armon will be set for life wherever he ends up going in Europe.

And who says he can't improve his NBA stock while playing in Europe?
  • jordo212000
This all assumes that he will get a big contract from a European team. If he does, more power to him. Great decision I guess

Congrats to Jordan, he definitely deserves it.

Just because you know "a guy" doesn't mean it works like that for everyone. And making six figures a year isn't being set for life. Especially when talking about guys that go on to play pro sports and spend the money like there is no tomorrow.

Anthony Parker is the only guy who I can think of who improved their stock by playing in Europe. Its altogether possible that Bassett does, although it is also possible that Bassett suffers a career ending injury.

I'm not saying it works like that for everyone..but if someone from a D 3 college can do it, a guy who just lit up Georgetown in the NCAA tourney can. And making 6 figures a year is definitely being set for life.

Bassett will make a ton of money overseas. He is much better than some of the other Americans who have been playing there for 10+ years.

First off, 6 figures won't set him for life, especially if he's planning on taking care of mom and the gang. How many professional athletes file for bankruptcy after making multi millions?

Seconldy, your friend from Wooster didn't make $100,000 his first year out of school. He might have made that eventually, but for a D3 guy, he's going to start in a low level league probably making $20,000. Once he proves himself his first few years he can start to make more money.

Even a guy like Bassett, he'll probably start off making $70,000 or so depending upon how good his agent is with European contacts. It's not like he's some big name guy from Kentucky. No one in Europe has heard of him, so he won't start off making a ton of money. But it is still likely more than he would make with his sports management (or whatever easy major OU offers to their athletes) degree upon obtaining it.

Really? How long do you think he plays? Let's say 10 years, and he makes $2,000,000 over 10 years and spends 1/4 of that. At the age of 35 he's done with basketall and has $1.5 in the bank. Not exactly what I'd consider being set for life.

I love how your entire post is assumptions.

But the guys that have been over there 10 years are marketable. The European teams not only want to win, but they want to make money and they do that with the Americans. Contrary to what some might believe, Bassett from Ohio University isn't going to be some highly coveted player in his first few years.

My assumptions are more educated than yours. I had offers and contemplated going overseas once I was done with my playing days in D2. I spoke to several different agents and know how it works probably moreso than you.

Really? A guy who just lit up Georgetown in an NCAA tournament game who also played his first two years at Indiana and started 31 games in a season for the Hoosiers isn't heard of? I'm gonna venture to say European teams aren't retards, they know who Armon Bassett is.

I'm with Jordo on this, the contract gets his family taken care of for now. God forbid he gets hurt, or it just doesn't pan out for him in the pro game, he's going back to the shitter with way less options. but the degree at least gives him a chance to keep his family afloat after the basketball.

So because when you came out of college and didn't get a $100,000 offer right away, means no one can? Like I said...assumptions.

He would go back to school for one year to finish his degree....oh the humanity!

Like he can't get his degree once he does get hurt?
