Zoubek's Miss

  • Prescott
If you were the coach would you have told Zoubek to miss the 3nd free throw??I know Butler was out of timeouts, but that missed point put losing into the equation.Obviously, if Zoubek makes it the worst case scenario is a tie.

It worked out for Coach K and the Dukies, but I am not sure it was the best move.

    Miss.

Odds say they won't make a desperation toss from half court over a set inbounds play that they practice. Especially if the ball bounces around for a second before they control it.

Did he miss on purpose? I posted on another thread that he looked like he tried to miss. I would have done the same thing if I was the coach, tell him to miss it, it will take Butler about a second just to get control of the ball. If you make it they can inbound the ball and have almost four seconds to get a decent look at a 3.

    Definitely miss it on purpose.

It took an illegal screen and an unbelievable heave for Butler to almost pull it off.

the hell are you watching that was clean, just because he got fucked up doesn't mean it was illegal.

If Howard falls down when Singler plows into him, its a player control foul on Singler and Howard is shooting 2 FTs. That is of course the officials make the correct call.

If Butler was out of timeouts, the answer is definitely to make it. They wouldn't have been able to set anything up to run in the 5 seconds they had to get the ball in bounds anyways, and would still have been shooting a half court shot.

The only difference is a make in that situation ties the game instead of beating you.

Yeah if Butler sinks that half court shot everyone on here would be calling for Zoubeks head. You make it.

Hell, Butler missed the shot and I'm still here calling for Zoubek's head. I'm glad to see him leave college basketball and I'm sure he is looking forward to his job at the Durham Citgo.

He couldn't possibly have missed that on purpose? Certainly, Coach K, would never tell a player to miss a shot only up by 2 points with 3.6 seconds left on the clock. No way any coach would instruct a player to do that. It doesn't get any dumber than that.

It was close. He was barely set in time, if he even was, then he leaned into the defender. Had that been in the middle of the game, I believe he would have been called for it.

And I was rooting for Butler, FYI.

They are talking about this on Mike and Mike this morning.

I don't understand the thought process of missing it on purpose. Sure the clock starts sooner, but if you are up 3, you are basically guaranteed to not lose in regulation. You put yourself in a position to control the game by going up 3. I really don't understand the other side of the argument.

I would of had him try to make it. My thought process is, which option has the worst consequences? If you do miss, and they hit a 30 or 40 footer, you lose. If you make it, the worst that can happen is they tie the ball game. Hayward missed that shot by about an inch, and everyone would have been crucifying Coach K today if that ball went in. In hindsight, it's easy to say he made the right decision.

If Butler was out of timeouts
    Butler was out of timeouts.

If Zoubek makes the free throw Duke has a 3 point lead with 3.6 seconds left. Duke could then foul in the backcourt, which would have forced Butler to make the 1st free throw and then miss the 2nd, secure the rebound , and score the ball. If all four of those favorable outcomes occur for Butler the game is TIED.

As it was, Butler needed one favorable outcome to secure the WIN.

It seems to me that the odds say to make the free throw.

Make it. Im pretty sure he tried to make it also...he just blows at FTs, lol.

Why would ANYONE want to miss a FT to go up by 3?? You make sure you are going to OT at the very least. By missing, you risk the foul being called, a 3 pointer being made, etc.

And that screen was very legal. In fact, if Singler had turned his head at the last second and braced himself he likely would have knocked Howard over and in that case Howard would be at the FT line (granted it wouldnt have been called....but you get the point). Dont feed me the JUST set in time, because I have yet to see a screen where the player was ever set for more than a split second (or a charge for that matter). All that matters is he WAS set.
