Brian Zoubek

I was just thinking it and they're talking about it in the presser right now, I never would have guessed Brian Zoubek would be the one to uplift this Duke team to a title. Over the last few years the big thing against Duke was that they would get bullied down low and just go out to the longer, more athletic teams. I never would have thought the most unathletic, injury-riddled guy would have been the one to beat that weakness but he definitely was over the course of this season. As someone that's ripped on him a decent amount the last few years, a lot of credit is deserved his way.

He's still not very good. He's the seven foot version of Painter from Butler. Fouls WAY too much. Had they called 1 of about 5 possible fouls in the first half on him, he would have fouled out with about 6 minutes left to go.
  • Cleveland Buck
He's a very good rebounder, but otherwise he is a stiff.
  • Prescott

Zoubek asserted himself the last 1/4 of the season. I don't know what got into him or why he was a no-show for 3 1/2 years.

I'm not arguing that he's some sort of stud or anything, I'm just saying that he was the spark this team needed to get over the hump. Over the last 9 years Duke has always had the talent in their first 2 or 3 players, but the drop-off from there was what cost them. Scheyer, Smith, and Singler couldn't do it on their own, they needed someone else to do the stuff Zoubek did over the course of this season. He did, and they're the champs.

Burt everyone ripped even Duke fans. Now I'm sad he is leaving and for his first 3 and a half years I couldn't wait for him to be gone. He was a big reason for Duke's success this year.

Duke was pretty loaded Redick's senior year. Redick, Williams, McRoberts, Dockery, and Paulus formed a pretty good starting 5.

yea when you can rape people under the basket and get away with mma elbows to the face you should be a good rebounder

    This.

He should have fouled out on that play in the final minute. That was one of the most obvious missed calls I have seen in a long time.

Every announcer in the early/middle part of the season said Duke's postseason success depended on their big guys. Most named Mason Plumlee as the person who could put them over the top. Who knew it would be Zoubek? I've criticized the guy for most of his career, and he was injured for most of it, but he really brought it the last half of the season and is a huge reason they won the title. Can't believe I'll miss him next year!

Yes, and the Matt Howard "Hold on a second while I clear an open look for my boy by trucking your ass to the floor" throw down of Singler wasn't a foul. OK.

    Eat it, son.

I hate 7 footers who don't try to play defense, but instead try to take charges.. Especially when he undercuts two players and injures one in the process.
  • darbypitcher22
He's a goof and looks like a goof when he's moving around on the floor.

I renamed him "Douchebek" for the whole night of the game

I loved watching Zoubek in this tourney, and hearing people cry about him.

ROFL you did that all by yourself? You showed him!
...Unfortunately the night ended with him kissing a trophy, not caring about what some loser on a message board thinks. Too bad.

Prescott - when naming that 2006 roster, don't forget Lee Melchionni. :P

And yeah, I along with everyone else can remember cursing Zoubek's name over the years. I remember how clumsy and soft he could be. Glad to he reversed his ways long enough to win a title.

I wasn't naming the roster. I named the starting 5, as I noted, based on the boxscore of the 62-54 loss to LSU. Melchioni played 8 minutes in that game.

So you are saying he's good NBA material. That's all they do, every day, inside.

That's a outright lie. Did you not see the interview, with the injured player, before the championship game? He even said that when he planted, his "LEFT" leg blew out, and had nothing to do with any contact.

In the replay you can see that the only minor contact was with the injured players' right leg.

But you can just go on your way and make up stories.

Agree, and he will have a longer pro career than the 7' old man that played one year at OSU.

That's like saying Josh McRoberts has had a longer pro career than Jay Williams and thinking it means something in regards to how good they are. Greg Oden >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Brian Zoubek. Zoubek definitely put Duke over the top though. They had championship level guards but needed some juice inside and he provided that.

Anyone saying Zoubek injured Butler is living a lie. Let them be. Their team probably played in that junior varsity tournament or something, trying to win games to make themselves feel better about being a closer team and losing 17 games.
