AP Poll a total joke

I think when you look at the teams in the state finals one would have to say it was again this season.

Polls are nothing but a popularity contest....sportswriters voting for teams??? Come on....they don't see 3/4 of the team's they vote for!!! I hate poll's.....they are absolutly worthless!!!

Sports writers see more basketball than anyone except for coaches, who are limited to just watching teams they play.

maybe in they're area futbol....not the entire state. polls are a popularity contest and based on the name of the school...not the current year's team.

    Sman,
If you look, historically, at the AP poll, it has been fairly accurate. While it's a great thing to be able to debate its worth, I doubt that there are many on here who could do better.

I totally agree. Sure, they are never going to be totally accurate, and they will have years like this year where they happened to be a little off. But the polls, for the most part, do a good job of grouping together the teams that are at the upper end of their divisions. If you're expecting anything more than that of it, then maybe you just need to adjust your expectations.

For example, look no further than Texas this year in college basketball, and those voters do see nearly all the teams. They were ranked #1 for a time, and ended up losing more than half of their games in the final fifty percent of their season. And 3 of the top 4 teams in the Final Poll have been knocked out of the tournament. That doesn't mean the voters did a poor job having those teams up there, as they were clearly in the upper echelon (just as Northland, Liberty-Benton, Ottawa-Glandorf, and many others were this year in Ohio). Those teams just happened to not play their best on a given day or were beaten by teams that were better but just started to gel late. Either scenario shouldn't result in any blame falling on the voters.

Coaches have been seen at other school's games, they do scout possible future opponents and probably see more of a variety of teams than sportswriters who only see there assigned teams or local areas games.

I don't think the AP poll is any more or less accurate than any other poll out there. I do enjoy watching everyone who claims the AP poll is worthless get their panties in a bunch because their team is not ranked at the level they think it should in what then becomes a joke of a poll.
