Privates vs Publics. Here we go again.

  Heard that Port Clinton sold out their original allotment in one day and received another 500 tickets Tuesday and they are nearly gone. Always cheer the public schools.

  Do the private schools have an advantage? Probably and especially in basketball where one player might be the missing piece. I don't think separate tournaments will ever happen.

  I'll give an example of the advantages the public schools in Columbus have. Columbus public has open enrollment, so if you live anywhere in the district you can basically go to any of the High Schools. Well Northland has kids from all over the city, as did Brookhaven when they were the dominant team. But unlike a Watterson where parents pay over $6,000 a year to send their kids there, Northland is free.

  One thing worth pointing out. A high school student-athlete in the Columbus Public School system must sit out a year if he/she transfers after 9th grade.
  
  Another advantage that private schools have is that they can limit their enrollment, so they can participate in a smaller school division.

  ^^ Why would they turn away tuition money? Yea maybe if the building is at peek enrollment, and in that case most of these buildings were built 30 years ago or so. When starting a private school you have to determine how many people your area will be willing to pay the tuition. You can't just build a school for a enrollment of say..... 1500 kids, 9-12, in town or rural area that won't come close to filling that big of a building.
  
  BTW I didn't attend nor do I send my kids to a private school so don't go there.

  prescott, first point is well taken. The second is so incredibly wrong yet it keeps being brought up in online forums. I've coached at inner city schools and private schools. I can assure you private schools do NOT, EVER limit enrollment. They want the money much more than they do any championship.
  In fact, the only instance I know where a school lied about or adjusted enrollment, it was a public school. And, before you bash me, this particular school lied about its enrollment ... saying it had MORE students than it did. Why? Because it felt the extra state money would help the education. As an FYI, this was/is a solid D-IIII basketball school that has won state and is often in the regionals. When I heard this happened two years ago, I felt the school would have been a shoe-in to make states in D-IV (the division it should have been in) but lost in the D-III regionals.

  I wouldn't be so sure.Using absolutes can get you in trouble.

  Do they turn away students who have the money to pay, probably not unless that student is an absolute pain in the rear behavior wise. However, tuition itself is a limitation to enrollment.

  Never will there be a consensus on this. You are either called a whiner by privates or a recruiter by publics. I have not read all posts on all sites on this topic...so if it has been discussed I apologize. Here's my thought...If the reason is really academics as it is supposed to be. then what if we rid the system of private school sports and let the student return to their home district to compete in athletics..this would go for publics as well. This way the private school parents can still get that education for the kids that is the #1 priority as they all say and no one can be accused of recruiting a student based on athletics. Pretty radical idea but I am interested in the arguments.

  Add "for sports", and the absolute is correct. It just doesn't happen.

  ^^^^^ Correct, its just a by product of the tuition. One that happens to benefit some private schools athletic teams.

  ^^^^^ Really, they dont benefit by blocking a percentage of the popultation by charging tuition? This percentage leads to the fact that now they have less enrollment when compared to a public, therefore playing down in competition?

  Tuition would be a limiting factor if in fact everyone who attends the school has to pay tuition.

  Nothing is more awful than the disrespect shown by the Moeller fans at the end. Just more fuel on my fire to get rid of all sports in private schools. No sense of community....the only people left to witness the trophy and medal presentation to their team were about 30 students and maybe 100 total fans...and I am being generous. Pathetic really. Yeah they chanted "we have Jesus" during the game but "Jesus" was no where to be found even in the fourth quarter...he didn't care enough to stick around and support his team. Moeller should be embarrassed by the disregard not only for their own team but for the team that schooled them on how to play basketball. My team came up a bit short Saturday but 90% of our fans stuck around not only for our own boy's awards, but to applaud the State Champions as well. Jackson, I am sure, would have done the same...congrats to the Polar Bears on your first Sate Title

  I agree with most of what you said, but the fact that Catholic schools have no community is wrong. Ready prides itself around community, in every aspect of our school, including sports. I think that the aspect of a "community," is something that Catholic schools have over public schools. that is my opinion. And you have to put in fact that when Moeller won, it was really late and the fans had to travel a good distance, maybe a reason to leave after a handy win?
