Out looking for transfers?balticwahoos wrote: Where are all the Hiland Posters? -
FlashProfm, there were 3 charging calls before that. Its hard to get a 4th call in a row. Anything close will go the other way, if not anything more than to even the fouls. That being said, Hiland had uncharacteristic turnovers in the last minutes that caused their down fall and not that one call. Harvest won the transfer battle 3-1 ,also.

Ok, now I know why the announcers made a point of mentioning this right at the end of the telecast. Apparently, Grove City lost their sports because of a failed levy. That makes more sense as to why it was brought up.riders1 wrote:

Probably on their way home.balticwahoos wrote: Where are all the Hiland Posters? -

Yes they had a rare one, but never three in the same year. Not that it matters, all rules were followed.riders1 wrote:

The right call should be made everytime regardless of frequency. That call was not the correct one. That being said, it was not the reason Hiland lost the game. Turnovers and missed bunnies on Hilands side. The freshman Cheyenne Rose was the unpredictable dagger for Prep and Shicole Watts was the predictable dagger. Enjoyable game to watch. -

Reasons for losing are not mutually exclusive, i.e., a bad break on a call, turning the ball over and missing shots can all be reasons for losing. That being said, it's impossible to say for sure whether any one play made a difference or not. If Hiland gets that charging call, maybe they turn the ball over anyways. If they make one more layup, maybe Harvest prep gets one more steal. It's all speculation. Speculation is part of what makes spectator sports fun, but it is just speculation.majorspark wrote:Flash wrote: Profm, there were 3 charging calls before that. Its hard to get a 4th call in a row. Flash3 turnovers in last 25 secs. Missed bunnies. Great season for Hiland with some last second wins in the tournament. A lot of Seniors graduating. What will Hiland be like next year? Tradition and coaching doesn't graduate, but do they have people coming up.

bballfan64As my first post I think I will just cover a lot & get it over with...
1. Hard to call the girls transfers & make it sound bad when their home school stopped sports...If my kid had the talent that those girls had I would be finding them somewhere else to play too. They would be transfers anywhere, so why make it sound like they did such a disgusting thing...At least their home school isn't playing without them while they soak up glory somewhere else. There is much talent there...Good for them & I look forward to watching them play.
2. Stutzman's 5 charges were not all charges if you watch the replays, 1 was definitely a block...The blocking call on Weaver was legit, I watched the game & was SHOCKED by the call but watching the replay her feet were moving.
3. I didn't read anyone post about Noelle Yoder getting her bell rung but DANG, she hit a brick wall going full speed. I couldn't believe no one called out that screen for her...She was seeing stars for a minute I think. Nice to see her get back in the game so fast.
4. Missed bunnies & lay-ups will kill a team just about every time, and it help take out the wind in Hiland's sails...But the dagger was those turnovers!!!! They had 3 in the last 25 sec. 'nough said there.
Those are my 2 cents worth on the game,
Good luck to the senior's moving on to play in college. -
Mr. 300Talked with someone that was having breakfast this morning at the same place coach S and a few others were eating. The tears were still flowing this morning from the players.
-
THE4RINGZWhere are some of those Hiland seniors looking to play ball next year?
-
vhawks87Yoder is going to B.G., Weaver to Leighigh, Stuckey and Mast are going to Ohio Dominion.

THE4RINGZLehigh is a great school my nephew will be headed there next year to play football

I agree, the players have done nothing wrong, and neither has the school or coach. The issue would be whether a school should be playing in Div. IV when, due to transfers, it has that has more raw talent than most division I schools. Even if the answer is no, it's a very difficult problem to address.bballfan64 wrote:1. I've wondered whether the players put so much pressure on themselves that they were playing tight. They really did not shoot well in either game at Columbus. But they made almost 80% of their free throws, which is very good, and better than their season average. You would think if you were tight, it would be more likely to show up when you have lots of time to stand and think about the shot, instead of when you're shooting in the flow of the game.Mr. 300 wrote: Talked with someone that was having breakfast this morning at the same place coach S and a few others were eating. It did kind of seem to me that Noelle didn't shoot as well ever since her knee injury. She missed four games, and undoubtedly missed some practice time as well. But she did shoot very well in the Lutheran East game, which was the one game they really needed to get to Columbus.
Noelle Yoder is playing at Bowling Green, HIlary Weaver at Lehigh, and Katelyn Stuckey and Mykeila Mast at Ohio Dominican.THE4RINGZ wrote: Where are some of those Hiland seniors looking to play ball next ear?

Mykeila missed the whole season with an ACL injury. Losing her was costly, she would have greatly improved HIland's depth, she was their fastest player, and verly likely a double digit scorer.
Those turnovers were indeed very costly. In addition to the last three, Hiland had a total of four turnovers in the last two minutes. But it seemed to be that kind of game somehow. Prep had five turnovers in the last two minutes, including three in the last minute, and they had another turnover at the 2:08 mark. Ten turnovers between the two teams in the last 2:08.bballfan64 wrote:But the dagger was those turnovers!!!! They had 3 in the last 25 sec. -
Mr. 300Replay of the game is on STO right now. I was out of town all weekend, and am enjoying getting to see the end of the game.

HesstonDissapointing loss for the girls, very proud of their effort and sportsmanship, same goes for our coaches. Something Prep could use.
Comming up a little short in the finals hurts but its still very tight.
Great group of seniors that will be missed.
Would have loved to see Mikayla play this year she is such an athlete and would of helped yesterday.
Once a Hawk always a Hawk! -
mxwlsmrtI witnessed the game at the Schott and replayed on STO. Every girl gave it all she had and it was indeed a great game.
I have a question for everybody questioning the block call on Weaver. Do you believe every charge call on HP was correctly called?
We will definitely see HP in Columbus for a few more years and it doesn't matter that they got 3 talented transfers. It matters that they stay below the # they need to remain in Div. IV. -
bballfan64
I am wondering what this comment is about...I was at all the games this week-end, from Thursday thru the finals...I didn't witness any bad sportsmanship from any team or coaches. What did you see that I didn't?Hesston wrote: Dissapointing loss for the girls, very proud of their effort and sportsmanship, same goes for our coaches. Something Prep could use.

HesstonCoaches screaming and running around the court at the end of the game...no handshakes
That's what I meant -
PariahHey, was a little busy in Columbus this weekend. Missed two days of work so things were piled up. So, now I have a little time to put in my 2 cents.
I've watched about 20 Hiland boys or girls state games. Strange things happen down there. With the exception of Jena Stutzman's performance in the title game in 2008, I can't remember anyone shooting lights out down there, especially in the Schott. Players do uncharacteristic things and sometimes coaches do things they wouldn't normally do.
I'm convinced it takes a good measure of luck, chance, or serendipity to win the thing. Noelle shoots around 40% from 3, so she misses 6 out 10. Against LE she nails it, otherwise the Hawks never get there. In the state semi she tries to dish the ball to Katelyn Stuckey but the ball is deflected. However, it rolls to Kate's feet and she picks it up. She's walled off and doesn't have the greatest of angles. We've seen her miss that shot more than once this season, but she put that one in, so we go to the finals. In the finals, a frosh who shoots 40% from the FT line nails two in the last minute. And we get one of those charge/block - can go either way calls that goes the other way at a critical point.
As for the block/charge thing - it looked like a horrendous call from section 105 row L seat 9, but when I watched it on DVR, Hil was moving just a little laterally. Still could've been called a charge, especially since the girl was totally out of control, but I can't fault the official for making the call he did.
We shot terrible, but you look at that game with 2 min to go and its anyone's game. We have our best 5 on the floor, 4 of them seniors, and we can't make a shot and we turn the ball over 3 straight times. Our amazing PG has the ball taken from her, which probably didn't happen 5 times all year. That's sports.
As for the bawling and carrying on, the disappointment was massive, but let me go on record as saying that I thought it was ridiculous when it stretched into the next day. There are genuine tragedies that happen in life. Losing that game was not one of them. Our girls are great and classy winners. When necessary, they need to be mature losers. -

I agree with that too...Tears afterwards were expected but the next day is indeed a bit ridiculous...Be proud you got there & remember the great season.Pariah wrote: I'm convinced it takes a good measure of luck, chance, or serendipity to win the thing.
That is one of the MOST true statements ever!! Luck is big down there I totally agree. A ball roll on the rim, 1 dribble too many to let a steal happen...anything can & usually does happen in that big game. You may be on the lucky side or not.

I have to say that girl held some massive nerves down, she had a lot riding on her young shoulders, I was pretty impressed.

I thought the same thing...I was across the gym from you but it sure looked NASTY!!! But like you watching the replay her feet were moving a bit.

Mr. 300Pariah, glad you got things caught up so you could post I was waiting to hear what you had to say, and make some great points. The girls have shown class in winning, but also need to understand how to accept a loss. The thrill of victory and agony of defeat were on full display after the loss and on Sunday. Need to harness that a little.
I heard the girls didn't even stay around for cake and punch at the welcome home....they all just bailed. Is this true??? Always need to make time for those that support you in getting to Columbus, win or lose. -
ricolavery good points pariah. didn't geta chance to see only but a few minutes of the first half on TV, so can't really comment on much of the game itself. i can certainly understand the extreme disappointment the girls had. When your expectations are set exceedingly high, where anything short of a sate championship is considered failure, it says a couple of things. One, is that you have established a heck of a program and tradition. remeber a decade or so ago when the boys made it down three straight years (i think) only to lose the first game at state each time. Extremely disappointing, where another school or program would have been thrilled to have ever gotten there in the first place.
It also says something about ones character to see how they react in these circumstances. It's much harder to accept defeat graciously than to be humble in victory..but the person of character can do both. Not saying I--or many--can do that, but certainly something we need to strive for. -
PariahSomeone asked about next year. On the one hand you look at those 5 seniors and there is no way you can lose those kids and not feel it. It will be felt. On the other hand, the defense will be the same. It will be scoring and executing on the offensive end that will be the concern.
Hiland will have 2 seniors:
Ashley Weaver - very good athlete and defensive player, rebounds well
Arrianna Schrock - tore her ACL in the sectional; was averaging about 6 and 6 as a post player before the injury; knee will be ready by fall
They will have several juniors who have played a lot of minutes on big stages:
McKenzie Miller - will be the leading scorer; instinctive and very skilled; can play inside and out
Reagan Miller - PG/SG
Meagan Hall - big guard
Hannah Stoneman - Legit 6'1" who really came on late in the year
A couple of other juniors who will have to contribute:
Missy Mast - eye popping athletic ability; just needs to use her talent to the max
Julie Raber - can score the ball
Bria Coil - post who has shown a lot of improvement
Emily Beechy - will vie for a role
One sophomore who played a lot as a freshman this past year:
Kendra Schlabach - PG, will just get better and better
Another sophomore:
Jasmine Goings - post player with a lot of potential
They have 2 freshmen coming up. One is Jenica Schrock, who I believe will back up Kendra at the point. She will eventually be an exceptional player. There is another frosh who will have a chance to compete for a role.
So, it's not like they graduated the program. Still plenty for Coach to work with. Expectations may not be as high as in the recent past, but I wouldn't bet against them winning the IVC, getting to regionals, and I wouldn't have a heart attack if they ended up in Columbus again. But that will depend on those players - and the aforementioned serendipity.
