Orrville vs Triway at the College

  • Flash
Wow those purple lenses have you seeing things different than me. I thought the white ref was terrible too, but FOR the purple. Called all kinds of calls for Triway in the last minutes that didn't happen or were ones not called all night that way. Triway mugged Bolyard early with grabbing and fouling, tried to trip Besanson, pushing in the back, etc. I guess it was just which side you were rooting for.

Triway is the more disciplined and plays a better team concept ball game. Orrville more athletic with a lot of players that are not basketball players, but hustle. Corbett is scary in that he is out of control occassionally, he went to the hoop a couple times and was challenged and may the better man win, but thats why they have ref's.

Congrats to Triway on a good season and if this game had gone 2 more minutes they would have won.

We need to work on cutting down non forced turn overs and foul shooting. Congrats to Wasson for breaking the 1,000 pt barrier in his junior year.

First of all I want to commend both school's athletes, coaches, and programs for joining together at the end of the game for a prayer. Thank you for showing us fans that there are many more important things in life than a high school basketball game.

Congratulations to the Red Riders on the win. Coach Sly had the team ready to play, and they answered the call. Continue to play the way you did tonight and this could be another Columbus year for your program.

Triway had a great season and a terrific tournament run. You went out swinging and I think that is all anyone ever asked as you. Thanks for an enjoyable season.

Orrville came out and took control of the game from the tip off. I am not just talking about the tempo, but in the half court game never let Triway get into any comfortable sets. Any successful running game starts with defense and rebounding, Orrville did both very well tonight. A.) Defense. Orrville contested almost every shot inside the three point arch and took away the drive and dish. B.) Orrville crashed the boards hard tonight and was able to get the ball out and up court, many times ahead of the defense or creating a numbers advantage on the break.

I was expecting Triway to try a little more up tempo game at times, but they never seemed to have the opportunity tonight. I liked Triway in tonights game because (other than being a homer) I thought they could be a little more flexible, play some slow tempo, then step it up when needed. The run at the end was too little too late, but the team showed heart.

Perfect example of how it was Orrville's night. They come down against a 2-3 zone and score on a baseline drive.

The game became physical and that seemed to favor Orrville. As far as the officiating went tonight I thought it was inconsistent at best. At times they would let them play and other times they were blowing what I thought were very quick whistles. But I don't think the officiating effected the outcome of the game. As far as the one guy talking to PitMan I would have loved to have heard that.

    Good luck next week Riders.

Must give a tip of the hat to Triway. Those kids never gave up even though they were basically barried and found a way back in it.

To Orrville Congrats on a big win!! Coach Slaughter thank you for saving the program. It needed it!!

Wasson- great accomplishment tonight with 1,000 pts but more importantly the win.

Still a lot to work on and that should make this team even more hungry. Good luck!

    Great Job Riders!!!!

^^^ nice self video of yourself during the game. Gotta love those new camera phones.

Agree with Rings assessment of the game. Hope Jake is OK, it looked like a cramp, but was unable to play. I'd be like losing LeBron.
  • OrrPride
Couldn't be prouder boys!! Nice job Coach. We dictated the tempo. We controlled the ball. We are THE CHAMPIONS!

Triway....well what can I say...........revenge is sweet. Keep rollin' Riders!
  • RedRider1
    rrfan,
Amen....Sly was the perfect hire. He's got the program back to where it's used to being. On top.

Jake's fine...just cramps. And I agree with the above comment about Hoobler....his return has really given us a lift. He's got a real soft shot for a big guy....and seems to play under control.

Ingram, Besancon, Miller, Corbett...all these guys had good, solid games where they didn't try to do too much.

CCC will not be an easy test. Montgomery and Grady are there 2 weapons...Montgomery had 23 tonight, Grady is a presence inside. I'm guessing the game will be up tempo...and I think we have the size to matchup.

    Flash,
The 4th district final is tomorrow night. Labrae vs Newton Falls.

Thanks RR1. I edited my above post already after I found out.

At long last ( 14 years ) we can say Orrville Red Riders and Regionals in the same sentence !!! Go Riders. Let's ride over the Ironmen Wednesday night! Oh, and how come they sent purple tickets to sell at Orrville? Did triway get red tickets?
  • Rock Chalk
    Great Season Titans!
  • thePITman
CCC made it back to regionals, huh? Looks like Orrville has the defending state champions (and the team that knocked out Smithville last year) on their hands. They have a very good PG and a very good post player, but the post player seemed young and inexperienced last season... I'm sure that has changed, though. Good luck, Orrville! I'll be listening to your game on the radio.

Pittman,I am a little dissapointed in you calling out Corbett like that. He is a very hard nose player, not the same as dirty..As far as dirty players how about # 10 in the purple...I thought he was as dirty as any player I have seen all year.

You say I'm wrong for calling out Corbett then you call out one of our players? I was not the only one who saw Corbett's antics. I've been to every DIII Wooster District game, and I've seen Orrville play at least 5-6 times this year, and I'm well aware of how he plays. But from before the game even started, everyone could tell he wanted something "more" out of the game. Ever since the end of the game in The Pit when he refused to shake hands, it was kind of expected, too. It doesn't surprise me... but he does give 100% effort, that's for sure... but some times you need to go for the ball.
  • lvhoops
Your right Pitt, I shouldnt have called 10 out . But you have watched him play all year . What do you think?
  • CCRolly
The "Lets play Football" chant was a little misleading in my mind. If they had played at the end of the year with the run Orrville was on and having everyone back and full strength...I'm going Red Riders 42 Triway 21.

Hitman, it appears as if purple glasses taint your eyesight, I saw Corbett hustling after the ball going all out and the purple players trying to get in his way. Apparently you didn't see "purple angels" holding and grabbing Wasson and Bolyard, because purple doesn't foul , they hustle and push and shove but not foul, there's no whining in basketball unless you wear purple and are #10 or Snotty and whine after nearly every call, or did your purple glasses only see Orrville infractions? And if the ref mouthed off at you was it because you spoke first?
  • 1486wd
i didn't really think the refs played much of a role in this one - they let things go most of the night on both sides - there was a lot of holding Bolyard as well that wasn't called, I will admit they called a few cheapies in the second half and got a little more inconsistent. The two things that happened in this game were Triway's poor shooting in the first half and the way orrville's "other guys" stepped up. If triway hits a couple of those three's early in the game, its probably a much better game throughout. That being said , they best team won tonight IMO to move on. Orrville's biggest challenge in the regionals will be the need for the role players to continue to score - Bolyard is the only one that really looks to shoot outside and the others will need to make a few as well for them to move on.
  • RedRider1
    ^^This.

Wasson scored 9, Jake scored 12 (?) and we put 69 points up as a team. That has to be their lowest % of team points all season. That's what needed to happen and needs to continue to happen if we expect to continue.

Not to continue to target specific players...but how about #42 (Butcher if i'm not mistaken) looking for blindside picks to set all night, and then setting moving screens all night. There was plenty of physical play all night on both teams....perhaps you saw the gauze in Wasson's nose the entire 2nd half. I'm sure that was just Triway "hustle" right?

It went both ways last night...to say any different is just being biased.
  • rrfan
rr1 BINGO on #42. I personally would have loved to see Corbett colide with him. All well at least we are still playing and Triway is at home.

On to the next game Riders.

    Good Luck!

LoL! It appears red glasses taint your eyesight, as well. The "tainted glasses" thing goes BOTH ways, sir. Faceguarding is supposed to be physical. I saw contact, but I didn't see holding. Of course, I'm sure Orrville fans were just staring at Polen and Carmichael all game to see if they might tug a jersey every now and then so you had something to complain about, 'cuz there sure wasn't much. LoL!

Good post. The refs did NOT decide the outcome. I agree on that.
RedRider1 wrote:It went both ways last night...to say any different is just being biased.
According to ALL Orrville fans, Corbett is an innocent little kid that bumped a few players out of pure hustle. To see it as that is completely biased as well.

    Good Luck!
LoLoL!! Did you not see Corbett dive straight into #42 and knock him to the floor? Butcher was laying on the ground for a while, which is when Coach Snoddy almost got T'd up, and rightfully so. That was the 3rd "collision" Corbett had with a Triway player. If you didn't see that one, it's NO WONDER Orrville fans are denying any wrong-doing by Corbett.

Corbett normally plays "hustle ball" for Orrville, and I recognize and admire his effort in those games. I've seen him play many, many times. But Friday was downright DIRTY. End of discussion. If #10 was dirty for us, I didn't see it. But it wouldn't surprise me if he was talking a little game. #42 for us is physical and can get caught up in things a little bit... there's a reason he missed the Waynedale game. If he did something in the Orrville game, I missed it.

I was watching the Cleveland Central Catholic vs. VASJ game on TV this morning, and it was a reminder just how good Chal Montgomery is for CCC, as well as Anton Grady. Contain those two, and I like Orrville's chances. But I'd say the same for CCC if they can contain Bolyard and Wasson. Orrville will have more size than CCC, but CCC will have the better supporting cast, IMO. Good luck Orrville! I'm rooting for you, and hope to see you playing when I'm down in C-bus in two weeks.
  • THE4RINGZ
    IMO...

Orrville knew they could step it up physically against Triway and take control of the game that way. It worked. Whether some of the players antics were dirty or not, there is no way to tell, we can't guess intention.

I will say that Orrville did out muscle the Titans, and a couple of the Purple Gang tried to play back at that game.

Rivalries are supposed to be physical, and hard fought. Add the fact that there was a Regional berth on the line just steps that up a notch.

Regardless, the game is over, and I wish the best of luck to the Riders the rest of the season.
  • BRF
    Thanks, PITman!

Personally, I kinda like it being known that we have a "hatchet" man, for once. It makes other teams think a little bit.

I remember when I was coaching, back in the day, and we were playing Norwayne. They had the dictionary definition of a "hatchet" man who actually fouled out in the 2ND QUARTER! We kept wondering why that kid was in the game early on, but we caught on REAL FAST as to what the deal was!!

    So, yeah, CCC.........think about it.

edit: BTW, I like this quote from the Lent Giving Up Cigar Smoker: "Rivalries are supposed to be physical, and hard fought. Add the fact that there was a Regional berth on the line just steps that up a notch."
  • THE4RINGZ
BRF in the Norwayne game you are referring to if you were coaching against O'hare you know 4-1/2 of that players five fouls were bogus. His teams were filled with Saints thus the occasional melt down with the officials.
