Triway vs. Smithville, DIII Wooster District Semifinal

  • OrrPride
Stall ball really sucks in my book. How will Coach handle it if he uses it with us? I hope he puts someone up on the ball and keeps the game moving to our tempo.
Smithville couldn't buy a bucket for so long. Frizell scoreless.....who would have thought?

I hear ya, 4RINGZ! But I'm going to go with the slow down as the pre-game plan and with the Smithies starting cold, it worked. Holding the ball for 7 minutes in the 3rd? Great job, however I would NEVER allow that to happen if I were the opposing coach. But I'm not, so the point is "mute"!

edit: See, here is the deal. We have "Mr. Inside" and "Mr. Outside (and inside, too)". You do NOT let anyone take that away from you. And I say this from my tutelage from the Old Man. He would NEVER allow any team to dictate tempo. EVER. You find me a game in his career where the score was that low due to another team trying to slow it down against us (which was tried many times..........BUT was not allowed to happen)........BECAUSE..........we would SWARM ON THEM and create action. We used what we had personnel-wise and used it to OUR advantage.

Perhaps I shall have a little chat with the coach and talk about the old days.

What a game by Triway, tonight... holding Smithville to 22 points!

Frizell - 0 pts (only got off 4 shots)
    Bates - 3 pts
    Caldwell - 4 pts
    Orr - 6 pts
    Horst - 9 pts

There were only 15 fouls called the whole game, 5 in the first half.
Points Off Turnovers: Triway 12 - Smithville 5
    Total Rebounds: Triway 30 - Smithville 22
    2nd Chance Points: Triway 6 - Smithville 1
    3pt Points: Smithville 15 - Triway 3

    Smithville ... 7 .. 6 .. 3 ... 6 .... 22
    Triway ....... 8 .. 7 .. 2 .. 19 .... 36

In the 3rd, Smithville hit a 3-pointer with 6:38 in the quarter to go up 16-15, and Triway held it for the next 6 minutes and got a layup with around 5 seconds left to take the lead heading into the final quarter. We held the ball to get Smithville out of their zone, most likely, but it worked... and look what happened: 19-6 fourth quarter. Smithville just couldn't guard us, and they (and the fans I talked to) knew it. Orrville will be a different story, though.

Congrats on the win, Triway! Now, time to ready for Orrville. They'll be ready for us. Playing at the College of Wooster!

Great game plan by Triway. Slow em down and control tempo. We can expect the same and they did it once earlier this year and it resulted in a Triway win.

I hate the slow down/stall game but it is and has been in Triways program for a looooonnnggg time. Boring yes, successful yes, but its Triway bball and it works for them. Although I think its bush league!

Smithville came out cold and needed to come out at halftime with some fire. Like they did with that three pointer but never touched the ball again. Not sure why they stayed in that zone.

When you play stall ball you run the risk of your own team falling asleep. Triway's fourth quarter performance showed they were awake. Incredible D and 80% from the floor

Did we shoot 80% in the 4th quarter? We shot 36.8% for the game, which is pretty bad, so just imagine what we were before the 4th. Smithville shot 22.9%, which is even worse... but just about every single one of their shots were contested... but we let Horst and Bates shoot just about whenever they wanted, making them beat us; and they couldn't. We had a number of easy layups.

I listened to the end on the radio. Did I hear Smithville took 19 out of 34 shots from 3-pt range?? Makes no sense to me. With Caldwell and Orr inside...??? Does Triway match-up that well in the post? How about some 7-15 ft j's?? Oh yeah, I forgot, kids don't practice those now-a-days... Sounds like Smithville was in a funk and Snoddy wasn't going to let them play their way out of it. Great strategy. Won't work every night, but in the tourny, whatever works that night, you go with.

    fourfourtwo,
Yes, 22 of Smithville's 35 shots were from 3-point range, and they went 5/22 in those shots. We let them take 3's all game for a reason (except Frizell, who went 0/4 on heavily-contested shots while being faceguarded all game).

Ricola, like him or not Potopsky is a heck of a coach.
  • thePITman
But no, ringz. I don't have stats specific to the 4th quarter. Sorry.
  • THE4RINGZ
Pit I thought you would confirm the 80% shooting in the fourth and yes there were a number of uncontested lay ups, but Triway's D and game plan won that one for them tonight
  • tha_facilitator
needs to be a shot for teams like triway....
  • THE4RINGZ
What is the old saying about the three pointer? You live or die by it.

I guess I just saw the last couple years at TCC where he flamed out---wasn't impressed.

Congrats to Triway. sounds like they put together a heck of a game.

I thought maybe you kept stats like that. But from what was said on WKQT during the game Triway was 80% + in the 4th.

Nope. I just get them by half. BUt it wouldn't surprise me, since we were running 4 corners and only taking a shot if it was an easy bunny.

I also wouldn't be surprised if somebody scores 22 points in the FIRST QUARTER this Friday. Haha!

Good game plan by the Titans! Good Luck to Triway Friday!

I've heard and read a lot of comments about this slow down stuff for this game.........and how people feel like they got ripped off for paying and we need a shot clock and blah blah....................It's all a part of the game. And it's a PURE part of the game that hasn't been messed with. And I like that. I have stated that if I were a coach, that would never happen to my team, BUT if you choose to play into that hand........so be it.
  • THE4RINGZ
Exactly BRF. A team that is ice cold at halftime needs to come out with some fire. Not many teams can turn it off then turn it on again quickly

Now here's the next move in this strategy you gave a young coach a few different wrinkles to prepare for with a two day gap in between games.
