you could well be right hoops (I hope you are), but have seen too many times when the "best" team does not necessarily advance. (I think Malvern and Hiland both have some examples in the recent past) A poor shooting night, an unusual "hot" night from the opponent, foul trouble, injuries.... e.g. From the sound of it, if malvern played Rosecarns ten times, malvern probably takes the series, but in one game anythigng can happen.jlghoops wrote: Winner of tonights game goes to Canton. Rosecrans is good, but no match for Hiland or Shadyside. Malvern played awful and it showed. #10 drove the lane and baseline all night with no one stepping in front or stopping him baseline. Malverns shooting woes hurt them also.
Good luck to the Hawks
We'll have our hands full tonite no doubt. appreciate the support. -

Nah, the Lakeland/Hiland District final from 93 was tons better......obviouslyHesston wrote:
I agree best High school game ever, well maybe #2 behind '92 State Semis vs Lima Central Catholic.majorspark wrote:
That was quite a streak of solid match ups. Especially the 99 district championship. Both teams get red hot in the second half. Hiland scored about 70 points in that second half. Rosecrans scored just a handful less. Best high school basketball game I ever attended.wes_mantooth wrote: I am hoping for a Hiland/Rosecrans battle.....just like the late 90's/early 00's.
PS. I am a Lakeland grad -
wes_mantoothAlso, I didn't get off of work in time to get tickets....anyone think that they will be available at the door? I have no idea what kind of crowd that Shadyside will bring.

There will be plenty of tickets at the door. Just don't forget to bring a few extra bucks they make you pay to park.wes_mantooth wrote: Also, I didn't get off of work in time to get tickets....anyone think that they will be available at the door? expect a large turnout. even against st. johns, which we knew we would win handily, there was a very large turnout. this is a tad bit more important than the st. johns game.wes_mantooth wrote: Also, I didn't get off of work in time to get tickets....anyone think that they will be available at the door? I'm sure there will be nice crowd on hand. But there should be plenty of tickets. I have only seen Medowbrook sold out once for DIV district. That was a district final.bloozebrother wrote:

september63final? Dover lost to Zanesville by 5.
-
DukeBlueEven with the loss.....good season for Hiland.....maybe they should have held the Ball like Triway vs Smithville........ 35-22
Final Score 55-50
Hiland Lead 38-15 at one point then 40-22 at half......man only scoring 10 points in the second half will not win u many games unless your Dover........ -
september63Dover shot 1-12 from the field in the 4th Qtr.

wes_mantoothWow is all I can say.
Great heart by Shadyside. A lot of seniors on that team and they played their asses off.
As for Hiland, I have never seen a team completely derail that quickly. Their star had to have more turnovers than points and he never got it going at any point.
Shadyside simply outhustled, outplayed, and outcoached them in the 2nd half. I feel sorry for Hiland, but this was honestly not a state contending team this year. Next year on the other hand...
I loved how Shadyside played, but I can not see this district having a representitive at state....weakest year I have ever seen. -
bloozebrotheronly question i have is has anyone checked the one basket? too low, too high? shadyside scored 22 points on it and hiland 10. we were in unchartered territory being down 18. shs showed true character coming out and playing arguably their best defense of the year. congrats tigers. as far as having a state representative, we will see.
-
PariahExactly blooze - about showing character and I'll add toughness. If it was a 4 round fight, Hiland game out and landed haymakers in the first and second rounds and had Shady on the mat. In the 3rd round Shady landed their own haymakers and Hiland went timid. The 4th round was a manhood check and Shady had the grit and deserved to win.
If the Hiland boys want to know what toughness is, they just need to look at the team they played last night in terms of how they got off the mat and came back swinging.
That being said, the Hawks had a nice season, and their best days are ahead of them.
Shadyside deserves all kinds of credit for battling back, but they can't come out and get down 18-23 in the first half. Another team that doesn't play fast and is disciplined will squeeze them out of the tournament if they do that from here on out. -
Hesston
heartbreak city, sort of like last years hiland girls state final game when they led big at half and gave it back.DukeBlue wrote:

Shadyside played a great 2nd half, that defense was smothering and relentless, we gave them too many 2nd chance buckets, tons of offensive rebounds.
congrats to shadyside and good luck. -
bloozebrotherthanks for the kind words. to get a win against a quality team like hiland cant do anything but bolster our confidence. you are right though, we need to play four complete quarters if we want to advance. still cant figure out why only 32 points scored at one bucket and 73 at the other. cant ever remember seeing that big of disparity before.

ricolapurposefully didn't write anything up to now---didn't want to have a "derek andeson moment" writing something in frustration. But that's what it is--frustrating; last night and the season as a whole. Never remember sitting there watching the wheels fall off like that before.( tho like hesston said--somewhat silmilar to the girls' state game last year--i didn't make that one). painful to watch. not getting to lose balls or rebounds that dropped in front of us killed us.
A lot of credit goes to Shadyside, and congratulations to them. They made good adjustments and played like they wanted it more the second half no doubt. good luck the rest of the way.
Hopefully Hiland can learn from this and not let it happen next year. -
PariahSometimes out of frustration and pain comes clarity of what one must do. The Africentric game last year may serve that purpose for the Hiland girls this year (we'll find out tonight and/or over the next 10 days) and perhaps the boys will come back with the grit they need next year due to last night's game. I think they will. I believe in them. They need a leader to emerge.
-
wes_mantooth
Exactly. I think I heard the guys from WKLM say that Shadyside had 7 seniors. They had two very obvious leaders that would not let their season end. Hiland is very young and will be a force next season. I have a good feeling that their coach won't let them forget about what happened last night.Pariah wrote: Sometimes out of frustration and pain comes clarity of what one must do. jlghoopsBoy did the IVC pick the wrong week for two teams to lay eggs. I imagine those two coaches will spend all summer reliving Tuesday and Wednesday night.

hawktalonI read in the paper where our coach mentioned we didn't have the toughness to win this game. That may be true, but i don't think the coaching staff should get a free pass here. If this was 5 years ago and Troyer is the coach in this game, he gets crucified. Not hearing any questions about how we coached this game? How can we not be playing Jalen Miller the majority of the second half--probably our toughest kid on the team? Or Josh Yoder? Where were those guys in the second half when our lead was going down the tubes. It was apparent Dylan was not "on", and that's fine, there will be games like that. He had a ton of rebounds, etc. But if he's not getting his points, how can we not get the ball to our second leading scorer--Boyd? Did he get any shots the second half? How many times was he given the ball in scoring position the second half? Shadyside set a thousand screens for their shooters all night. Did we set any?
Don't get me wrong;I'm not calling for our coach to get fired. We have a good coaching staff. But looking at this game honestly, and the season as a whole, there are times when I was left scratching my head. I don't think it's a stretch to say we got out coached in this game. And I wouldn't doubt Coach S. would disagree with that. I would guess (and hope) he probably learned quite a bit from this season, and this game specifically that will benefit us next year and thereafter.
Good season guys. After a tough loss like this it's easy to forget the good games we had, and good season. 16-4 and sole winners of the IVC is quite an accomplishment and something to be proud of. It's just that everyone, from the players, coaches to the fans was expecting more, so it seems like we failed. We need to learn from this year, and that includes the coaches as well, and take the next step next year. Keep up the hard work this summer---it will pay off next fall, winter, and hopefully spring!
