Another outrageous score
-
buckccfri. jan29 Col. Africentric 114 Col. South 14 this doesn't supprise me from them.
-
4theteamCome on? Have you seen South play? They haven't had a team for years, what do you expect a team to do? Just about any decent team can put their bottom 5 kids in to play and beat this team by 50.
-
Red_Skin_Pride^This. We beat them last year (I think) by like 60 and our starters never saw the floor after the half. Gosh golly gee whiz wally, what did you think was going to happen when you match one of the best teams in the state annually, with one of the worst, annually.
-
buckeyedanfor those that hate these scores...
answer me this question...
I know a team fairly well that tonight plays a team that might be a mismatch...
now there's not danger of scoring 100 points... not sure if they could do that if there was no opponent on the floor at all! sigh... (but for sake of this example let's pretend there IS)
This team has 6 full time varsity players and dresses another 8 girls that play JV.
Here's the thing... the opponent does not have a JV team. To avoid a hole in the JV schedule a JV team is coming in that is going to be a HUGE challange for the JV team. The JV team played them a few weeks ago and lost... the JV team continues to improve by leaps and bounds and needs this competition to move forward and help the program grow...
point being...
let's say the varsity WAS a team that could easily beat this other team by 100.
how would you expect the team to use more than the 6 varsity only players for the first 3 quarters (no matter the score)... rather than hurt their kids developement, the JV team, ect... because their OPPONENT is struggling???
that is... those JV players dressing varsity will almost certainly play 4 quarters of JV... leaving only 1 for the Varsity (and is some cases less as again... you get 90 quarters... not 100... so kids can't play 5 quarters EVERY night!
So if it's a big blow out and all you saw was "they only played 6 girls for the first three quarters!" are you upset? or do you realize there are OTHER things that happen out there and it's not played in a vacume?????
do you also realize that the opponent FULLY understands the situation? and nobody INVOLVED has a problem with it? (heck they've already asked to be on the schedule for the next season!)
point is... these games don't happen in a vacum!
Africentric could play their JV team the entire game... subs and all... and win this game against South by whatever they want...
if you know africentric... and you know South... 114 to 14 WAS holding the score down... -
Hawks SSDid I see Africentrics star player have 44 points? Why not make a certain amount of passes before a shot. The last time I checked, no shot clock in H.S. I feel they just ran the score up to help some stats of their players. Just my opinion.

wes_mantoothThis is why girls bball is hard for me to watch. Blow outs in a boys game is 30 points....blow outs in a girls game are 70 to 100 points.
-
buckeyedanReally?
we are talking an elite Columbus City League team (Africentric) winning in blow outs
so...
95-33, 82-26, 99-50, 104-38...
Those are some Northland (elite Columbus city League School) boys league scores... -
Pariah
That's pretty much true. There are so many more mismatches with the girls. A bad boys team may lack superior skills or may just lack athletes, but there is usually at least one kid who can dribble and do some scoring. Most boys programs are putting in some kind of minimal effort to be decent.wes_mantooth wrote: This is why girls bball is hard for me to watch. With the girls there are too many teams with no to minimal skills and I see a lot of coaching/program mismatches. Coaches who teach, motivate, and basically know what they are doing vs. coaches who don't. And programs that really work at it vs. those that bring the basketballs out of storage in October or even November.
I disagree that a lot of it is "hard to watch" because a lot of it is UNWATCHABLE. I endure these games because Punkin' is playing. We played one of those games last night that ended 71-18. The other team brought less than 10 fans and we had only 75-100 brave souls who were willing to endure it.
Thursday night there will be a premier team/program visiting. The gym will be near full and even if we lose, it will at least be watchable, and in that sense, enjoyable.
More schools need to try and more coaches need to work on skills with their players. It's come a long way, but there is a long way to go.
The boys game is a completely different game because it is played above the rim and with a radically different level of speed and stregnth. But when girls have skills, it is a game of execution, and in some ways, a more pure form of the game. Those matchups are too rare. -
eski1Does the Columbus City School District still offer playing a sport as a way for girls to pass their gym requirements? I know when I coached softball in the OCC a few years back we'd run into city league schools who only fielded a team because the girls needed the gym credits to graduate...
I've watched my Alma Mater's girls team play twice this year... they're 0-fer in the past 2 seasons... they're the biggest school in their league, actually have good athletes, but the coach chased half of them away last year and can't seem to motivate the group she has this year. Girls are a whole different animal when it comes to coaching. I don't care how nice you are, where or even if you played college ball, if you can't get their attention and learn how to get them going, you will not succeed. -
PariahHiland beat Toronto last night 78-4. Last year Hiland drew criticism for beating them 88-10 by folks who weren't at the game. I wasn't at this year's disaster, but I was told that the only way Toronto could have scored 10 again would have been if Hiland laid down on the floor on defense.
Usually folks focus on what the winning team/coach should have done to keep the score down, and that is legitimate if they press and play their best players throughout, but assuming that the bench is played appropriately and there is no pressing with a huge lead, I am wondering if the losing team should be assigned any responsibility for these scores? -
buckeyedansure...
did they complain? (probably not)... so why worry?
I talked with a coach the other day who had the opposite reaction to keeping the score down:
The coach had two games this year where he knew the outcome would be really lopsided... he made plans and went into those games starting some kids who don't normally start... playing lots of kids who don't get much playing time, constantly rotation the entire roster, never pressing, ect...
he won the two games easily... BUT
playing teams that are use to losing by big scores he ended up winning like 45-12 and 43-18.
When he got to the tourney draw... those two teams were the two teams that voted him the lowest of any teams in the district... by far.
Seems they compared the beatings they took by teams not being so "nice" to those games!
IF those two teams had just voted him tied with the lowest anyone else had voted him: they would have been THREE seeds higher! IF they had voted him average to everyone else - FOUR!
That would have made a HUGE difference in the draw for his team.
He's discovered there's simply no way he can "take it easy" on teams in the future as it's crazy to hurt his team because the opponent isn't as good. He's got a point. -
PariahIn other words... no good deed goes unpunished!
-
Cha'DIchAnother classless display by Hiland.
-
HereticIt's hard to really complain much about some of these scores. I've noticed that at least in the Central District, especially among the smaller schools, there are lots of huge mismatches in the early rounds.
Here are a handful of scores from the "rat-tail" round and sectional semis that have taken place over the last two days:
76-17
75-9
66-6
89-34
Crap, compared to those games, a few others that ended 61-33, 62-35 and 54-24 must have felt like nail-biters! -
PariahOh good. Hiland isn't the only "classless" program.
Perhaps Cha'DIch can share with us what class would look like in a game where one team has no skills and they go against one that does. I'm waiting anxiously to hear the brilliant wisdom from this obvious expert on class. I'm sure he wants to not just criticize, but be part of the solution. After all, no one wants to be classless. I'll pass on the wisdom to the coaching staff and perhaps we can get this problem solved once and for all. -
bluishgreeni was there...and toronto should consider themselves lucky, it coulda been 200-0 easy!!! hilands jv woulda won 100-4...people who werent at the game should be forbidden to comment on hiland and furthermore people who have never been part of a true championship team or around one, or even know what it takes shouldnt be able to voice their opinions on topics like this...
-
Pariah
And it should be noted that bluishgreen is not a Hiland fan, but rather someone affiliated with our next opponent - the Mighty Malvern Hornets! Jr Samples posted somewhere that Hiland will win that game by 80. Not sure about that. Although the last game was a 78 point margin, the Hornet girls have been playing better of late. We'll see y'all Wednesday at Claymont.bluishgreen wrote: i was there...and toronto should consider themselves lucky, it coulda been 200-0 easy!!! hilands jv woulda won 100-4...people who werent at the game should be forbidden to comment on hiland and furthermore people who have never been part of a true championship team or around one, or even know what it takes shouldnt be able to voice their opinions on topics like this... -

THE4RINGZI have been around Hiland sports programs for 25+ years we played against them when I was in high school now I see them play against the school my kids attend. Hiland sports are anything but classless. If you think they are maybe it is time to broaden your sports fandom horizons and learn how truly classless teams and fans behave
-
FlashIf you can't beat them you've got to aggravate them some way. LOL
-
dlazzOh good, I don't have to start another thread about this:
