Waterford 110 Southern 14

bLuE_71This topic has been blowing up over on preps. I can't believe that the coach for Waterford is such a jerk and let this happen. The coach played the starters time in all four quarters!!!!

buckeyedaneh I clicked over there and had to stop reading when I saw "this was unspeakable"...
unspeakable is beheading somebody on youtube... blowing up a plane... genicide...
110-14 is barely irritating...
it's sprots... stuff happens... get over it or stop playing! (well... stop watching as nobody who's a competitor would get that bent out of shape being beat badly... happes to us all at one time or another if we try enough things! If we are all staters on a great basketball team we probably get rocked while bowling with our friends or get smoked on the golf course or rolled in tennis... how we DEAL with winning and losing... big or small... is what sports is all about! Thankfully the kids tned to get it! It's us adults that lose site of it. ) -
ricolalooks like a really good team played a not really good team---and that's what happened. agree. get over it. blow outs happen.
-
FidmeisterBut winning by 96? That doesn't happen unless the coach is a douchebag. Plenty of ways to keep the score from turning into this.

4theteamAgree with Buckeye Dan on this. I have seen our team up by 30 and still keep starters in while we rotate the bench. If you want to train next years players you still need starters to help them out and get them into the right places. Parents and fans are more insulted than the oppossing team, so you lost badly, move on. Life will hand you harder lessons than a sports game will ever do.

bLuE_71I can't believe people are defending this.

buckeyedanfidmeister?
so what's the magic number? if they win by 95 is he a nice guy? 90? 75? what's the magic "nice" number? Or should he just let the other team win... I mean how mean is it to actually beat another team? let's just stop keeping score to keep feelings from being hurt... sniffle sniffle
Blue71defending what?
I've coached teams that have bitten off more than they can chew a time or two over the years...
frankly in this day and age of PC I'd rather be on the losing end! Winning a blow out just ain't easy! Your starters don't want to sit (they get so many games in their lives and this is one of them! "my family came from Mars to see me for once in their life and I'm not going to get to play much?") your regular bench expects more PT... your JV bench expects PT... and you are always worried the partents of boths side and other coach will think you did something wrong
last night we were beating a team 20-2 after 1 and 32-5 at the half... they started pressing US... I am friends with their coach as she's a great lady and hey... she wanted to work on things and get better! She can't do that if I goof around and don't play!
I learned a couple years ago at a small school, starting out a program that the kids just want to play... I remember we had just 12 kids and with some injuries we were in a situation where we could play a JV game but we'd only have 5 kids with no subs... against a very good JV team... I canceled thinking they'd be destroyed... all five girls were upset and said they'd rather get beat 100-0 than not play!
believe me they are playing some games at the JV level that are over their head and taking their lumps... but they are getting better! and at the JV level nobody in our league has come within 15... those lumps pay off! Hopefully they'll make better varsity players down the road from it as well...
If waterford puts in the 5th string and plays around then Southern doesn't get anything out of the game but a whoopin... if Waterford continues to play good ball then Southern can get something out of it from a developemental standpoint...
stop obsessing about certain numbers... the kids don't
a loss is a loss
getting whooped is getting whooped rather it's by 50 or 100... the kids just feel whooped! And most competitors know there really is no difference! -
enigmaaxApparently the other thread on this was moved/deleted?
blue - This was meant as a response to your comments from a few minutes ago.
The starters scored 62 points in the game. Is that unreasonable? I don't see the difference between spreading out the time to a few minutes each quarter versus playing the entire 1st half. The outcome was not going to change and the score wouldn't be much different. Unless you are saying they just shouldn't have played, but then why would it even be a varsity game?
Aside from that, I'm not in favor of putting reserves in to just have them pass the ball around and/or stand around. They have to learn and play the same style and that style includes aggressive defense. I don't think it is as easy as some make it seem to tell kids "don't play the way you practice". The same goes for passing up the open shots that they had.
I know the score sucks, but it isn't like they played any harder or did anything differently just to make the score look bad. -

buckcci commented on this in the CIC topic , like i said i don't want to bring up a sore subject about lopsided scores. but to the person or person's that rip us about beating Malvern in the first game of the season 104-33. better think again, as what Waterford did to Racine Southern 110-14. i can bet u in a million years that Dave would have never let that happen. so to all u Hiland basher's better think again.

People remember stuff like this too, and don't think it doesn't motivate the kids on the losing end to get better. I remember a few years AFTER my HS got it turned around (after 5 years of not winning more than 7 games, one year with 1 win) I asked our then-star player if she even liked playing in games we were winning really big...she said hell yes, because she remembered going to watch our varsity play while she was in elementary school/junior high and watching them get killed, and she never, ever wanted to get beat like that while she was in high school (and we never did!)
Things like this teach you a lot about your team/coaches. There really is only one way to go, so you find the best way to pull it together and get better. And several years down the road, when YOUR team is good, you keep these things in the back of your mind for motivation. -

k, just wondering And thanks, their going well. I'll be up in Tiger Town on Saturday for the girls game.tigerfan82 wrote: yes I have Miss Muva...........hope things are going well for you in the big city! -
PariahI remember a player from the 80's at Hiland telling me about Coach Reese taking them down to, I think, J-Scio for a game. There was the usual rotation for a half and they had something like a 60-0 lead at intermission. In the second half it was all younger players playing, but JS couldn't stop them and by the fourth quarter it was something like 99-0. Coach told them to play a lazy zone, but JS couldn't score. Next he told them to stand in one place on defense and not defend at all. Final score was 99-2.
When it is a mismatch of epic proportions, there is only so much you can do, and the list of options are limited.
Since I wasn't at the game, I'll assume that Waterford is real good, and that other team isn't. -
