#2 Columbus Northland defeats #9 Oak Hill Academy

  • detectivegibbles
The coach for Oak Hill stated that he would not let Jared and Trey beat them. And he didn't. They played great defense against Northland. Their offense was just awful that game plain and simple.

Chosenone: I checked some of your posts and you have said 1. "they are all dumb" 2. called a player a "pansy" 3. said there was the "worst reffing in decades"... 4. SJJ gym "sucks" 5. criticized "selfish players". And you call someone else a "downer"? Ross Ford is a little more direct than he needs to be and I don't agree with his opinion 1/3 of the time, but he is more knowledgeable than 90%+ of the posters on this website.

besides you and your sister, who are these "a lot of people"? do you have any idea what a high school player, playing on national television against a nationally ranked opponent, goes through emotionally? I doubt that you ever played much past CYO,so don't judge the "level of play" of teams that you could only dream of being a part of

There have been other negative posts on this website and much more on others. However, Sullinger is the best big man in Ohio and one of the best high school players in the U.S. He has improved so much in recent years in all aspects of his game that he has no weaknesses. He can handle the ball, passes it well and has an outside game. By the way, I did OK when I played -- 1,000+ points -- All-Ohio, etc. -- How did you do vballset??

Actually a great coaching job to triangle and two Jared and Trey and then double Sullinger so he could not get the ball. A little easier to do when you have a 30 second shot clock – less time to play defense and not enough time for Northland to work the ball and expose a gimmick defense. Weatherspoon was tough around the basket. To me he is better than anyone Oak Hill has inside. Oak Hill was not nearly as good as Findlay Prep. Findlay was better inside and had way better shooters. Down 11 going into the 4th they could of folded up but didn’t. Sullinger did end up with 20 rebounds and 3 block shots. He did take Sullinger away but gave J.D. 21 and the Robinson kid 12 – that’s 33 of Northland’s 47 plus throw in jared’s 3 foul shots and that’s 36 of the 47- Northland in the end was too much inside for Oak Hill. I think if Oak Hill plays a regular defense – Northland wins by 15+ easy.
That's why Northland is #2 and Oak Hill is #9.

Interesting in that the Findlay Prep game was like 52-51 and seemed like a great game and the Oak Hill game was 47-46 and seemed awful! Maybe it's because Findlay Prep played straight up instead of some gimmick defense and took on Sullinger -Oak Hill knew they had nothing for him straight up!

For Sullinger to be held without a field goal in a game against this kind of competition while being double teamed the whole game is not that big of a shock. Oak Hill has a bunch of top 100 kids and had nobody with like more than 3 or 4 field goals made against Northlands base defense!

Oak Hill showed how good of a high school player Jared was because they had to put 2 guys on him to stop him to have a shot to win - and still didn't. Coach Smith found out how good J.D. was - glad he is going to OSU.

Be interesting to know when the last time the great Oak Hill had to do that in order to try to win a game.

hookshot--you're full of more crap than a christmas goose...remember,those who can--DO,those who can't--talk about it

you're right about one thing--Sullinger IS the best big man in Ohio,if not the country ;)

Why am I full of crap? Its one thing to think I'm wrong about my opinions, but now do you think I'm lying? What about my last post was "crap"?

I think Northland wanted to let oak hill double and triple Sullinger all day. Sullinger stood on the block and never really tried to get open, he was just there to take up bodies, and northland knew someone would always be open and they were going to take advantage. Which is a good strategy. Sullinger never came off the block to try and get the ball like he did in the last minute of the game when he drove and got fouled. Northland was just playing to get the open players involved and JD took advantage. In the findlay game, if sullinger was doubled down low and couldn't get open he would come off the block and take the ball at the top of the key, this did not happen against oak hill. Great coaching by Sullinger IMO, he always reeled his kids back in when it looked like the game was going to get away from them. Great win for Northland, how they aren't number one after that win is beyond me.

One of the best analysis I've seen on the Northland strategy. OneBuckeye, what was your take on Burke and Staten in this game? I think both are exceptional guards, but thought neither had one of their better days.

Uhm well lets see the proof? You honestly can talk the talk, but can you live up to your so called game.

I think Sullinger came off of the blocks a few times, especially late in the game.

Sullinger did come outside the key a few times, but they were hounding him. He did exactly what he should......he didn't force the issue, he trusted his teammates and they won the game.

Yeah, they need to get bigger, the oak hill guards looked like men compared to them although Lamb was the only kid for Oak Hill that stood out to me.

I did say sullinger came off the block in the last posession and wasn't going to be denied. He didn't come off that way the rest of the game when he did. He was either doing it on purporse to bring the extra guys off the block or wasn't playing at 100%. There was a huge difference in his attitude and body language on that last play where he came out got the ball and drove then he had the rest of the game when he came out to set picks or anything else.
