Toledo Blade Poll 1/5

irish_buffaloNo Southview?
D-I
1). Toledo Central Catholic 6-0
2). Perrysburg 7-1
3). St. Johns 6-1
4). St. Francis 5-1
5). Toledo Whitmer 4-2
Libbey is #1 in D-II -
hookshotIf Southview has another good week or two, they will be there. Central has key games against St. Francis and St. John's each of the next two Fridays. Re: Division II and III and IV, for the most part the teams in the Blade's poll area are exceptionally weak. Again, some exceptions (Liberty Benton, McComb) but if you include all of Northwest Ohio the teams in those other divisions get much stronger.
-
irish_buffaloWhat is Southviews record? I thought their only loss at this point was to Perrysburg but I must be wrong. Beating SJ is impressive.
-
Swamp FoxSsouthview is coming on. Tonight will be a big determiner I think. If Rossford beats them, I don't think we'll see the Cougars in the rankings for a while. i think that the Cougars are going to win tonight but the Bulldogs shoot the ball extremely well at "The Wolfe". The NLL is a tough league this year.

jm71witmrSouthview is 5-2
-
WHSBasketballMy rankings regardless of division:
1. Central Catholic
2. St. Johns
2. Whitmer
2. Perrysburg
2. Rogers
2. St. Francais
***After Central it seems to be a crap shoot! Strong basketball in the area this year!!! -
Swamp FoxAnd when you consider that Whitmer had to battle like crazy to squeak one out against a "not so good" Scott team, it makes you wonder if there is anyone who is an automatic victory in the City this year? Waite only beat Bowsher by 8. I suppose Woodward is the weakest of all, but I wouldn't even bet on that as an absolute victory.
-
hookshotI don't have a disagreement with hardly anyone's rankings at this point, because its early and there appears to be so much parity in the TCL and beyond. I would say there are alot of above average teams but possibly no great teams or really good teams in the area this year, at least in the top 2 divisions. A quick question though, why have Central as a clear No. 1 with the rest "a crap shoot". I'd say the Irish are part of the "crtap shoot" -- maybe No. 1 and maybe No. 6. Remember also Whitmer was one second away from another loss to a so-so Start team.

ross ford81St. Francis will now be gone from the list for the year (loss to a mediocre Findlay team by 18 was amazing). Winner of the Central-SJJ game this Friday will be No. 1, and Perrysburg deserves No. 2 thereafter providing they win this week. Southview falls away as well by losing decisively to Waite. There will be changes every week -- the nature of Toledo area basketball this season.
-
irish_buffaloAgreed, it certainly is a crap-shoot.
Perrysburg beats Southview, Southview beats SJ, Whitmer beats Perrysburg...(could go on and on)
Very surprised in SF. How on Earth they cant exploit the 6'11 Stanley more is beyond me (4 points vs. Findlay)? They also have about 3-4 outstanding guards.
The funny thing is that on paper CCHS probably has the least dominating roster when compared to the areas top 10 teams. However, games arent won on paper and Coach Welling has done a tremendous job. -
ross ford81Add Maumee beats Waite and Waite beats Southview. Really, I just don't think Stanley is a very strong player, size notwithstanding. And the SFS guards are fair -- not of them probably attain the designation of "outstanding". As of today I don't see the Knights in the final four.
-
irish_buffaloYou may be right, but I personally think highly of Syroka, Goldsmith, and Dailey. I also think Yodzis and Fockler are solid at their positions as well.
I know what you are saying about Stanley, I'd probably agree but I feel there are many coaches in the area that could get more out of Stanley (and in a 3 year stretch, help his inside game out more). Aside from that, sit Stanley and let the 5 aforementioned guys run. Sometimes having a big guy hinders you when you have an athletic team that can move.
Regardless, this week will make things more complicated. I feel SJ will beat CCHS making not only the TCL but also the NWOhio picture wide open. -

erie warriorSt. Francis was beat by Findlay by 20 points Saturday night. The game was after a big rivalry game with CCHS, but SFS should have given more of a showing than what they did. The coach was more interested in jawing with the referees than he was coaching the game. He finally sat down and shut up after he was called for a technical.

thechosenoneSFS blew their chances.

SFSFanWater under the bridge at this point. Findlay was perhaps the worst ref'ing exhibition I've ever witnessed in decades of watching high school hoops, but SFS would've still lost that game. They didn't show up and nobody had even a good game. Central - it's hard to believe neither team scored more than they did, but the defense by both was outstanding. Central had the better athletes and made the points when it counted in the second half...well coached, well ref'd, all around a good city league game. For SFS, I still think someone (Lowe) needs to sit some of those boys down who constantly bomb the three pointers and miss. If you are having a cold night shooting, you should be looking to make passes to others, not continue to throw up bricks. It's the same as last year - Lowe doesn't control the players and help them make the right decisions (or sit them when they don't). This team is rapidly falling into last year's mode, where a few selfish players cost the team several games. It will be interesting to see if they can pull out of their tailspin in the two games this weekend.

ross ford81It has been written on here that SFS has four "outstanding guards". I don't know any of them who shoot too much, and if they are, it is so simple to stop it. Ending selfish play for a coach is the easiest thing to do. Period.

You are exactly right. Syroka, Focht, and Dailey all throw up 3's like it is their job. Goldsmith is the only really smart one about it who looks it the post and shoots the 3 in moderation. Lowe needs to learn to coach these boys or his year is ending soon and maybe even his job.SFSFan wrote: Water under the bridge at this point.
