  I see what you're saying. Sorry, I try not to be a member of the grammar/spelling police. Not trying to hurt anyones feelings.
  
  Wehrle did have a cheer where the first three letters were spelled by the cheerleaders, W-E-H, and then the crowd would answer back, R-L-E!
  
  Just a nod to the old cheer and a gentle reminder.

  I helped coach Tony Lucas a long time ago and was on the bench that night he went 10/10 from the 4th quarter thru the 3rd overtime.
  
  He is often overlooked when the discussion of the greatest in Columbus high school history.
  
  He was a leader in the area, if not the leader in scoring his 3 years at Hartley, 30 points a year each year as a freshman thru his junior year.
  
  I always felt he was led a bit astray by the folks at Youngstown State. Jim Cleamons recruited him and left shortly afterward for the NBA. I always thought Tony's talent was beyond that level but his decision to leave Hartley and go to Maine Central Institute may not have been a step in the right direction.
  
  Looking back,I wonder if he would do anything differently?
  
  I always found him to be a very nice guy, he used to referee 4th grade little league games and put on dunkfests at halftime, amazing stuff. For all his talent he was very coachable and a good teammate.
  
  It is a good example of how even the most talented of us in this world don't make it to the big-time, how fine the line is for not only having the ability, but getting the breaks, being in the right place and how important every decision can be in shaping our future. I hope he is doing well!

  I remember the Hawks traveling to play this juggernaut on the road. We had a horrible location to broadcast the game, but they put on a show for the fans.

  Hawks always played them tough.
  
  I got the privilage to watch them play Beallsville(sp?) and TCC back in 89...I think.
  
  Anyhow, they beat a very good Beallsville team by 50 in the regional semifinal and beat TCC by 40 in the regional final. It was unbelievable. The guys that sat at the end of the bench were better than anyone either of those teams had on their roster...lol.

  Mr. 300, I attended that Hiland/Wehrle game in 1985 or was it 86? Keith Troyer and Co. put on quite a show but came up short. I had to sit in the Wehrle cheering section as a friend/teacher at Wehrle got tickets for me and my friends.

  remember that game quite well too as I was there. the whole hawk faithful were waiting in line outside at 5pm, and had our section jammed full already when the jv game started at 6 (actually at 5:30 or whenever they let us in). Heck of a game as I recall as the Hwaks lost a very close game. I think Brewster was a freshman then, and remember Francis being quite a load inside.

  Was that the same year they played during the regionals at Athens??? That game was all decided by a bogus intentional foul called late in the game.

  Don't remember if it was or not, since I couldn't make that game. I kinda think that might have been a different year, beacuse i think we were hoping to have a rematch with wehrle in the state finals this year, but didn't make it that far beacause of the loss to Dayton Jefferson in the state semis in Dayton.

  The following years (85) might have been the best overall small school group of 4 teams to be in the final four. Both Wehrle and Van Buren were undefeated and Skyvue and Jackson Center had one loss each. Jackson Center beat Wehrle and Skyvue beat Van Buren in the semis and then Jackson Center beat Skyvue in the finals on a buzzer beater.

  I agree. Always loved playing Skyvue come tourney time. Still remember the name Hilverding repeated over the P.A. during the tourney. Its a shame they had to go. Monroe Central has never been able to pick up the torch.
