DIII Norwayne District
-
thePITmanThe DIII Norwayne District is divided into two "brackets" (more appropriately called "groups", since their respective teams all are joined into a single bracket). Here are the divisions, with each receiving their own seeding this past Sunday:
"A" Bracket's teams:
#1 seed: Triway
#2 seed: Norwayne
(the rest, I don't know the seeds)
Northwestern (West Salem)
Loudonville
Hillsdale
Wellington
Black River
"B" Bracket's teams:
#1 seed: Tuslaw
#2 seed: Canton Central Catholic
(the rest, I don't know the seeds)
Waynedale
Chippewa
Orrville
East Canton
Smithville
OHSAA Tournament Bracket: http://brackets.ohsaa.org/bracket.aspx?not=14&t=2134&ts=4802&ia=1&sp=22&dv=3&g=b
Here are some of my thoughts:- Tuslaw and Triway, the two #1 seeds, took the byes and ended up in the same half of the bracket, which could produce a 3rd meeting between the two schools if seeds hold. The two state-ranked, PAC-7 foes split their season series last week.
- The other big name will once again be Canton Central Catholic, a #2 seed this year, who has won the district the last 5 years in a row. Norwayne, the other #2 seed, beat CCC earlier this year, which adds a twist.
- The "A" bracket seems to have very good depth. As always, Northwestern finds themself in the mix with another solid team. Hillsdale is not as good as they have been the last 2 years, IMO, but they are still good and can be a very dangerous team to face in the tournament. Loudonville has surprised me somewhat this year, and has a solid, over-.500 record.
- The "B" bracket's teams seem to fall off quite considerably after the first 2 seeds. Other than East Canton, about whom I know very little, none of the other 4 teams (Waynedale, Chippewa, Orrville, and Smithville) has more than 6 wins on the year (17 wins between the 4 of them, per The Daily Record as of 4/29).
- The first big game that sticks out to me (if seeds hold) is a potential rematch between Norwayne and Canton Central Catholic in the District Semifinal on 5/19 at 2:00pm @ Norwayne HS. Norwayne's Jac Strickler has been dominant so far this year (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 25 IP, 0 ER, 31 K, 8 BB on the mound, .440 avg, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 17 R at the plate, stats per The Daily Record as of 4/29), and may be the district's best chance of knocking off reigning champ CCC early on, with other big-game pitchers being Tuslaw's Zorger and Triway's Wharton/Polen who could potentially face the Crusaders in the district final. In order for this Norwayne/CCC rematch to happen, though, Norwayne would have to beat Wellington and get by Northwestern/Loudonville first. CCC would only have to beat Smithville and Waynedale/Chippewa, which they should do easily.
- As mentioned earlier, another potential match-up could be between state-ranked league rivals Tuslaw and Triway. Tuslaw's ace Zorger and Triway's Wharton went head-to-head in their first meeting last week with the Titans winning 1-0 with a bottom-of-the-7th run off Zorger. In the second meeting, Tuslaw won 9-5 at their place. This could make for an exciting match-up if it happens.

madman11Strickler had a 0.00 ERA until he gave up 5 to my Indians last week
Other than that, looks like a very exciting district. -
thePITmanIf it's true that Norwayne's Jac Strickler is out for the rest of the season (didn't hear why), that is a big blow.
-
madman11I've heard why he is done....Kind of sad the things kids get into these days.....
-
thePITmanCanton Central Catholic beat St. Eds last night!Nice win tonight! CCC 4 - St. Eds 3. Frohman looked great on the mound and kept the Eagles guessing until the top of the 7th giving up a 3 run HR

blink180I read on another site that Norwayne may have lost Jac Strickler for the rest of the season. Is this true? I hope he is not injured. Hate to see that.

From what I'm hearing, it is true, and it is not injury-related. -
madman11It is a violation of school rules and a very severe one at that. I don't feel comfortable putting out the reason for everyone to see. Not fair to the kid.

Agreed. -
ridernationOrrville leading Tuslaw 3-0 before rain comes

thePITmanTriway 3
Black River 2
Triway (19-2) scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win it. Black River's only runs came in the top of the 1st when the 3rd out was recorded, but the home plate umpire over-ruled the call at first. The very next batter hit a 2-run homer. Otherwise, Triway's Wharton pitched a nice game! (as did Black River's pitcher)
Orrville 3
Tuslaw 0
(top 1st, 2 outs, delayed until Saturday at noon) -

Chippewa vs. Waynedale postponed to noon today -
thePITmanLots of pointless driving for me today. Got to Tuslaw, nobody there, found out it's postponed to tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:00pm. Figured while I was out I'd stop by Waynedale for the Chippewa/Waynedale game, and nobody was there, either, so I'm assuming it's the same case with that game, as well.

thePITmanWellington 3
Northwestern 1 -
thePITmanOrrville/Tuslaw baseball game postponed yet again, resuming tomorrow (Monday) at 4:30pm. Going into top 4th, 3-0 Red Riders. I see no way in the world that Chippewa/Waynedale got their game in, either.

Ahhh......the Huskies.....hot, cold, hot, cold, hot and finally.....cold.
It was definately a year of "Should of" and "Could of", but no excuses and no hardware.
Best of luck to all the area teams left, someone please knock off CCC and end their domination of this district. -

They'll need to win 3 tournament games in 3 days (weather pending), which could be tough. They face Waynedale tonight, so they will throw their #3 or #4 against them. Then they play Wellington, who has a good pitcher, I hear, so they will need to throw someone good against them, probably their ace since it's win-or-go-home. Their #2 is darn good, too, I'm sure, so it'll be no cakewalk in the championship for Triway/Orrville. -
