What's more important in HS basketball for a coach?

areyoukiddingmeWins and losses or teaching young kids to become mature and be productive in life.
I know the latter is more important for me, but if you were to decide whether to keep someone on a contract who went 5-15 every year (or close) or to replace them as coach for a person who has good character but may bring a better record to your school, what do you do? -
wildcats20Having been on a high school staff, I can tell you that winning will keep you in the position. Building good character will only take you so far as a coach. If you can't win, you won't remain a coach for long periods of time.

wildcats20And to answer your question, you bring someone in who does both.

september63Please go to the Perry Reese Jr thread from this forum. Read and you tell me what is most important.

ricolawould be hard to keep any coach for a long period of time if they consistently went 5-15 every year. On the other hand, if your coach went 15-5 every year and was a terrible example/role model, etc, it would be hard to keep him as well.

Who says the two are mutually exclusive? Why can't you be both a winning coach, and one who shapes character.areyoukiddingme;672912 wrote:Wins and losses or teaching young kids to become mature and be productive in life. -
sports_talkWinning is what it is all about. Coaches roles in molding young men is over rated. Certainly a good coach will DEMAND discipline when it comes to effort, fundamentals and the way the men portray the schools backetball program. But once they are gone it is all about how thier family has raised them. Parents are the number role model in a child/young adults life. If a coach does a good or great job with an individual yes they make a difference but that is only 6 or 7 years based on how involved the coach is and not a life time of love.
Win , win and more winning makes them look like giants in thier business. Any buddy blame a coach that won but one of his guys ends up in the state penitentary? Trust me on this one, many guys have won state titles and some of thier guys end up on skid row. Many have guys that go on to be doctors. Hmmm, what was the difference? The coach? Fudge no!!!!
