Weights for distance runners

  • orangechik00
Anyone have any good weight training programs for distance runners that you've had success using? To clarify, I'm more interested in info for girls. I feel like I've been doing the same old thing for years.

Good morning Orange. Hope the Big Orange family had a great holiday!
I wonder if your team does plyometrics or pilates? Call me old fashion but I'm not a fan of actual lifting weights. Lots of push up's and pull ups. Only weight being used is your body. Pull ups are a great workout. Plus, less chance of straining something from lifting weights incorrectly.

I'm sure 609 will get on here and read more out of a book or some other well known coach says do this or that. (haha)

I'd refer to ccrunner. While he will probably make all teachers look bad with his poor spelling and grammar, I'd push to him as resident cross country expert.

Happy New Year, said! I'm on the same page as you are about weights. You've seen my girls, some of them can't even lift the bar! We do lots of plyos, core work and use bands and balls. We've also been doing upper body work with weights, bench press, lat pull, curls, incline press, etc. Lower body - squats, leg curls, extentions and presses. Low weight, higher reps 10-12. Just looking for any fresh ideas. Just to clarify, we have an indoor season. BTW...Lil' Orange thinks she's a stud at pull ups...lol!

Off the subject - is it official that the District track meet will be at Graham? Convenient for us. :)

Ernest, it's too early in the year to be so salty! I didn't post on the other site because everything on there becomes some "psycho" argument.

I'm pretty sure it's at Graham.

That's what I heard but haven't seen a confirmation on the SW district website. Graham is where the district meet was way back when in my high school days.
Wonder if they'll realign the teams - seems silly to have Mechanicsburg go to Dayton when a district meet is in it's own county. I'd trade Versailles for Burg!

HA! No kidding. Isn't their girls D3 and boys D2?

609- do you have your runners doing leg weight lifting like Orange?

Either of you two do any plyometrics, using boxes for strength training?

Coaching Graham? Is Cupps still the coach?
  • orangechik00
609 - yes, I'll be at the clinic. Interested in seeing your info. We are starting with high reps/low weight but increase every 3 weeks. Got this workout at clinic several years ago. We also use boxes and have hill workouts on Mondays and Thursdays.

Ernest - Cupps is the head coach of Graham's BB team.

Said - yes, Versailles girls are D3 and boys D2.

How's your daughter & her team doing, 609? My daughter played in elementary and jr. high but gave it up last year. I have to admit, I like having a break in the winter.

Orangechik, did you graduate in 2000?
  • orangechik00
No ernest, I'm an old broad. I've been coaching since 1992.

So much for anonymity...you are correct. And you are?

609 - enjoy every minute of your kids' activities. It goes by in a flash. Thanks for the article.

Ah ha! I actually stole this name and tweaked it from someone else who used it years ago who used it on another site. The other Maynard is getting ready to go to Arizona to stay with my sister for a month. Now I really feel old!

If you want to feel older, I turn 30 in April!

Steve Flora? He was a heck of an athlete in multiple sports. I bet he could have been a decathlete.

This post is going all over the place, lol! Steve Flora is my mailman and graduated in the 70's. Greg Flora graduated around 609's time, early 90's.

Greg was two older than me, 1997. I was 1999.

I graduated from Graham with Steve. On the same youth soccer team, wrestling and track teams growing up. I don't know if it's one of those "son goes by middle name" type of things.....if not, I've been calling him by the wrong name for over 30 years.

    (lol)
