East Central Ohio League 2010/2011

  • Wooball
With ECOL play kicking off this week, who is the favorite to win the league?

I was able to see Dover open up the season at home against Buckeye Local on Friday night and they won convincingly. Played better than I had expected considering a majority of their players were with the football team until late November. Monaco is going to have a great year. Appears to be stronger and quicker than last year. He had 33 in about 2.5 quarters of play. If healthy, he will probably win POY. They pushed the ball and used some half court traps more on Friday than I had seen in a while, which got some lay ups and and open looks for other guys, especially Zahner. It will be interesting to see if they continue to play this way when league play opens up.

New Philadelphia, Coshocton and Meadowbrook all opened up with wins, while Claymont, River View and Cambridge dropped their openers. I expect Dover, Coshocton and New Phila to be at the top of the conference at the end of the year. The Redskins travel to Dover this Friday. The winner will have an early advantage for the league title.

Cambridge doesnt have a lot of talent, but i love the fact that their new coaching staff is trying to return to some of the old traditions from the coach ford days. I know he has invited old players to come in and play against and mentor the team and talk about what it takes to go to the state tournament. Not a knock against the last coach, but he really didnt involve the community and allow the town to rally around the team very well. I think from the Jr high on up they have good coaches who know how to win and know how to put some fun back in camb bball.... that being said i have seen them and they arent very good right now talent wise, so it could be a year or two before they challenge for the ECOL.

I didn't see any notes from the Daily-Jeff. Maybe GBlock could update on this game?

    Early Standings (league record)
    Dover 2-0 (1-0)
    Coshocton 2-0 (1-0)
    Cambridge 1-1 (1-0)
    New Philadelphia 1-1 (0-0)

On a side note, if Marietta would be starting league play this year, they would be 2-0 with wins over Cambridge and New Phila.

You are welcome, Wooball. I could do the Cambridge schedule , but I thought that with all their traditions returning, they would want to do it themselves! :)

    Scores from Tuesday 12/14

    Claymont 40
    Claymont falls to 0-5

    New Philadelphia 57

    John Glenn 58
    Meadowbrook 39
The Muskies drop the Colts a game below .500 to 1-2

Coshocton and Dover were idle on Tuesday. According the schedule I pulled off their website, the Tornadoes don't play again until the 21st @ Wooster. I also only have them down for 19 games. Does anyone know if that schedule is missing a contest?

Edit: Looks like I am missing a game against Cambridge, but since I don't have their schedule, I am not sure when Dover travels to take on the Bobcats, but if I had to guess it will be this Friday the 17th. No one else in the league plays Cambridge that day.

Gblock, if you know me (from either the old site, or life outside these boards) you'll know I'm nothing if not complementary towards all teams. Was just making a joke. Wasn't being salty at all about the loss, I recognize it for what it is.

Watched your dad coach tonight, my great-nephew plays for Zanesville, and he did his usual exemplary job in working with those young kids. Still wish he was at MHS...

Here you go, Wooball. Thought some of the Cambridge posters would come on and post their schedule, but only GBlock came on, and he lives away. So I thought that, just like their school district, they need a Colt to organize them and make them run better, so I decided to post it. (I'm kidding, Bobcat fans. :) ) I remember the old days when Cambridge had a bunch of proud posters and before this rivalry game there was a lot of talking. (Come to think of it, that applies to MHS as well.) Seems they all jumped off the ship a few years back and none have found their way back on. And that really is a shame. For the CHS-MHS game at MHS, there was a lot of empty seats. I remember just a few years ago you had to get there at 5:30 just to get a seat. Oh well, times change, I guess.

Anyway, here is Cambridges schedule, taken directly from the Daily Jeffersonian. Why they have 21 games I do not know.

    Cambridge Bobcats
    Tuesday, Nov. 30 - St. Clairsville (A)
    Friday, Dec. 3 - Marietta (H)
    Tuesday, Dec. 7 - Meadowbrook (A)
    Friday, Dec. 10 - River View (A)
    Friday, Dec. 17 - Dover (H)
    Saturday, Dec. 18 - Zanesville (A)
    Tuesday, Dec. 21 - Claymont (A)
    Thursday, Dec. 23 - Shenandoah (A)
    Tuesday, Dec. 28 - John Glenn (A)
    Tuesday, Jan. 4 - Buckeye Trail (A)
    Friday, Jan. 7 - Coshocton (H)
    Tuesday, Jan. 11 - New Philadelphia (H)
    Friday, Jan. 14 - Marietta (A)
    Friday, Jan. 21 - Meadowbrook (H)
    Tuesday, Jan. 25 - River View (H)
    Friday, Jan. 28 - Dover (A)
    Tuesday, Feb. 1 - Zanesville (H)
    Friday, Feb. 4 - Claymont (H)
    Friday, Feb. 11 - Coshocton (A)
    Tuesday, Feb. 15 - New Philadelphia (A)
    Friday, Feb. 18 - Buckeye Trail (H)

    Thanks,
I couldn't find it on that website. I too remember when either the Bobcats would come to Dover, or when we would travel to Cambridge, you had to get there very early to get a seat. But, pretty much since Gene left, that hasn't been the case. It is unfortunate that there are not any of their posters over here, they used to have some good ones that would make this season a little more exciting on the old board.

Also, there were a few years during the early 2000's when the Dover v Meadowbrook games were also packed houses. For the most part, it seems attendance is down for basketball in the eastern district (at least for ECOL schools.)
  • Wooball
    Scores from Friday 12/17

    Dover 48
    Cambridge 45

    New Philadelphia 67
    Meadowbrook 44

    Coshocton 55
    Claymont 34

    Zanesville 59
    River View 31

    From Saturday 12/18
    Zanesville 43
    Cambridge 36

Cambridge lost 2 tight ones to 2 of the better teams in the Eastern District (Zanesville is probably the best). Rough 4th quarters in both games cost them W's. Coshocton and New Phila remain unbeaten in league play while Dover and Cambridge have 1 league loss.

Marietta and Zanesville, who will be entering the ECOL next season, are unbeaten against current league teams.

Why does Dover and New Phila for that matter schedule Cleveland Max Hayes? How does this make them better? The annual trouncing? Grow a pair and take a trip 15 miles down the road and take on Garaway. Or go another 10 miles and take on Hiland. Or host either one. Why be scared to take on a smaller school? Big time savings in fuel costs and you will sell a heck of a lot more tickets. Look at the picture in the article. Its a ghost town in the Dover gym. Host either one of these teams and your gym is nearly packed.

Would Hiland or Garaway agree to play at Dover or New Phila every year? I'm sure the answer to that question is no. So if you want them to play, you will need to convince the schools to play the amishmen every year instead of someone like John Glenn, Louisville, etc that is on both teams schedules that they play home and homes with. Also, if you read the article, BVK answers as to why they play Max Hayes.

They may be willing to do just do that. Especially at New Phila since both teams tourney trail runs through Phila's gym. A little added experience playing on that floor would be a plus. No need to give up John Glenn or Louisville. Just Max Hayes. And yes I read the article and coach BVK reasoning. Basically it is a guaranteed win or some type of glorified practice where the deep bench gets a lot of minutes.

I find it hard to believe that Hiland or Garaway would be willing to play at Dover or Phila (although more likely) every year. Also, Hiland seems to play 2 of their 4 non conference games in a holiday tournament. Their other 2 historically have been against West Holmes and Triway. I don't disagree with you that they would be good games for the teams and the communities, but I would be surprised to see them play.
  • ricola
Why wouldn't Hiland play these guys? They've played home and homes with Dunbar& Benedictine the last 5 years or so. Tho this was the first year for their holiday tournament; if that is a yearly staple that would be 2 other games. But wouldn't be surprised to see Hiland do this; a home and home series at least for a couple years to see how it goes. With Conotton Valley being out of the league, there will be a couple extra games to schedule, at least if/until the IVC picks up another team. Hiland would prefer the better competition, and I think could compete with either of these 2 ECOL schools. Could see Garaway doing the same thing.
Can't believe that the Max Hayes game does anything to make Dover or New Phila better.

I didn't say they wouldn't play them, I was saying they wouldn't be willing to go on the road every year, with no return home game. I had forgotten that the Rockets were getting out of the IVC, so that would open up 2 dates. Still, I would be surprised if these 4 teams would play each other.

Although it would be pretty cool if the 4 would hold their own "tournament" every year. It could be held over 2 nights. Dover v Hiland & Phila v Garaway on night 1. The next night you could flip the match-ups between the ECOL and IVC. Rotate the event between the 4 schools every year. Would probably be a pretty good gate for the schools. But, the odds of that happening would be very slim.

I wouldn't want to play an away game without a home game either, but if you do a home and home every other year, it's fair for everybody.I like that last idea, tho doubt as well it would happen.( Would take too much cooperation between schools that don't like each other all that much!) That would be fun to watch, and you'd be guaranteed to have a packed gym each night!

I went to the Cambridge and Coshocton game on Friday. Tried to get there in time to watch the dedication of the gym to coach ford but with the weather it took us two hours to get to the game from columbus. I heard it was really funny tho. As far as the game goes it was very ugly. neither team was very good and cambridge's outside shooting is Woeful. They did play hard Defense and pressed very well. Coshocton was winning most of the game and had an 11 point lead with about 3 minutes and change and basically never scored another point the rest of the game and cambridge wins a nailbiter.
