IVC

  • Pariah
Garaway starts off the season with a 50-15 win over Indian Valley. IV's leading scorers had 4. Bardall with 15 while Slemmer and Kettlewell had 9. Misko chipped in 7. Impressive. Will Garaway average a half a hundred?

Strasburg beat Beallsville Saturday 53-31. Fondriest and soph Johnson had 12.

Malvern loses to Sebring 57-53. Smalley with 22 and Patterson with 13. Wood grabs 12 rebounds - and she's not that tall! Good nose for the ball.

    Things heat up Wednesday with

    Garaway at NCT
    SV at RW
    Malvern at TCC
    Hiland at the Burg

Probably the most parity the IVC has seen in years. Saw the Hiland girls play at the alumni game; haven't seen any of the others, but at this point would say garaway might be the favorites to win the league? Should be an interesting year.

Oh geesh, is everyone drinking the new coach S koolaide??
  • ricola
I'm telling ya 300...being the voice of reason here...after seeing the alumni game, Dave isn't blowing smoke. Well, a little smoke, of course..that's what coaches do, and he of course does it as well as anyone. But this team is unlike any I've seen here for years. I know a lot of them, and They are great kids. And they work hard. But they have a ceiling beacuse of there overall athletic ability, and that ceiling , IMO, is lower than the ceiling from a bunch of previous teams here. Granted, it's one game (a scrimmage no less) and the alumni traditionally have some great past players (Stud-ettes if you will). And they are not likely going to shoot THAT bad every game (we shot maybe 20% aside from layups...30% if you include layups?). They will probably shoot better when they are not pressured on dee as much as they were then. But if/when there is pressure on them, their shooting form crumbled, and I don't see that getting remarkably better (which it will need to) in the next 4 months , which it certainly will need to.
Dave's a good coach, and will get out of this group what he's able, but wouldn't be surprised at all to see WH handle them quite easily, and a couple conference losses (at least) are not unlikely as well.

So...perhaps you can add on the boys board...what will the WH boys bring this weekend?

One way or another, everyone will know what the Lady Hawks are or aren't in 2 weeks. During that span they will play Strasburg, Ridgewood, and Garaway. If they haven't been beat at that point, then 300 can say Coach has been on a propaganda campaign. If they have a loss or two, then I'm sure 300 will offer a complete retraction and profusely apologize. :)

Never! You can't make do it!

Coach S is on the same level as Joseph Goebbels when it propaganda campaigns. And NO, I am not suggesting Coach S is a Nazi or promotes Nazi beliefs.

Lady Hawks won 50-37 at Strasburg. It wasn't a work of art, and the score is not indicative of how close the game was for most of it. Hiland pulled away late behind post Hannah Stoneman scoring 3 consecutive buckets in the 4th qtr. Nothing wrong with the Hiland D. They did well. One Tiger did really well - Creagan with 21. She's not especially big, fast, or anything else. She is just tenacious and determined. Good player. Plus she's a good trash talker! Hiland had 17-20 TO's depending on who's stats you consult. That's where the big flaw is. Lots of young players learning to handle the ball against pressure. There are some execution and decision making problems on offense, but those things are fixable. They just need to play and work through them.

The stunning news is that NCT beat Garaway 38-27. Unreal. It took only the first game of the season to turn preseason expectations on their head.

TCC beat Malvern 57-38 (Patchan with 29 pts, 16 steals, and 5 assists)
RW beat SV by 31 (Tedrick with 21)

Part of coaching is psychological manipulation of your players and your opponents. Not sure the Nazi propaganda minister is a good comparison, but I get what you are saying.

It's not evil unless you are flat out lying/making stuff up. I think Hills and 300 think he is flat out lying. The deficiencies in his team are not made up, but a good coach will use that to get them better. It might just be a matter of how much you stress those deficiencies and how you describe them.

Lisa Patterson came down last night to check out the Burg's beautiful new gym. Love that big Tiger in the middle. His green eyes are pretty cool.
  • Mr. 300
So you didn't win by 70?? Is this what is being spun now?? We won't be beating teams by a 50 point spread so therfore we stink? We can only beat teams now by 20, so that means we really are a terrible team?? You just beat a team that was supposed to be better than you?? Come on man, it's just plain gobbledeegook.

Looks like I was right. :)
  • Pariah
You might be able to relate to this 300: Rather than Goerbels being the comparison, Dave is like a really good salesman who can cell popsicles to Eskimos and pork chops to Jews.

Hiland has a really strong inside game. If the bigs catch the ball in the paint, they finish well with points. That's one positive. They are rebounding decent as a team - but that is due in part to all the shots they are missing!
  • From the Hills
The reason he is a good salesman is because the fans of all the other IVC teams want to hear that Hiland is slipping and won't be good. They want to drink the kool aid. But I dont buy it. They will probably still go undefeated in the weak IVC.
  • Pariah
I don't think they will go undefeated, but it is possible if you are correct about the "weak" IVC. We just don't know yet. Garaway's loss may have been an abberation, and I think it is possible that NCT and RW are going to better than some might think. Some think TCC might have their best team in years. I've seen Strasburg, and I think they are a good team. They need a little more balanced scoring to beat Hiland. They don't have a big girl to give them offense and defense in the paint. But they gave Hiland a real fight the other night. It was a 5-7 point game early in the 4th. A couple weeks down the road we'll have a better handle on the relative strength or weakness of the conference.

As for programs who might surprise us with their struggles, one in particular has had problems for a long time, and the whole thing might be collapsing.

Kids have a sense of justice and fairness that is often unrealistic but real to them. They expect to be treated in certain ways. It they know you care about them and have their best interest at heart, they will generally take any discipline and instruction from you, and they will try to please you. If you violate those senses or expectations, you lose your ability to influence them. Win their respect and their hearts. Without that, they may do what you tell them, but it will only be because of fear, and they won't do anything extra for you.

Why does Hiland have a winning program? Several reasons, but one of them is those girls love their coach and that allows their coach to get more out of less.

Who, outside of Berlin, is drinking anything? Nobody buys it. Most people don't see a big difference in losing by 50 or 30.

    Junior,

Save me a seat Saturday afternoon. I'm sitting on your side.
  • tfloangel
okay Junior, but what about 13??? not a blow out by anyone's standards. I don't expect them to beat Conotton by 13, and I know that even in 2005 it took overtime to beat Strasburg by 3. I think the point he's trying to make is that it will be a different 'look' to the wins (and maybe a couple of losses.) Personally, my prediction is 15-1 or 14-2, or maybe 16-0 with a couple of legitimate 'scares' along the way. But with the exception of 4 games to teams in Green uniforms, I don't predict a whole lot of deficits surpassing the 20 point cushion.

As for the propoganda, it happens every year. If you ever look at a program, almost without fail Hiland girls shrink an inch or two once tournaments start. Even after the Regina game was ruled a forfeit, the staff still listed it as a loss, because 25-1 looks a lot different than 24-2. Coach will always try to give every coach the chance to underestimate his teams because he knows it will work to their advantage if he can get them to buy in. You all are seeing through it, that's fine. I don't think your his target audience :)

Who rattled your chain? I'm not sure why you're directing this at me. Strasburg might be the 2nd best team in the conference. I wasn't speaking to their situation. I was commenting on "from the hills" comment.

I don't care what he says about anything anyway. We're still losing by 50.

P, I'll do my best to save a seat.
  • Mr. 300
Who invited iron drawers to this discussion??
  • Pariah
Last night Hiland fell behind TCC 27-10 in the second qtr. and then woke up, but still trailed 31-23 at half. Hiland outscored TCC 29-8 in the 2nd half to win, but it was ugly in the first half. Young players continue to turn the ball over at an alarming rate, but they did better in the last half. I think the difference was the reaming our girls got at half time plus TCC just ran out of gas. Hiland's depth won this one even though our depth results in bad to's and decisions sometimes. But they will get there, and they can only get there by experience. M Hall had 15, Kenzie Miller with 14, and frosh R Hochstetler with 13. Kenz had 9 rebounds. Hiland had 17 assists to TCC's 2.

NCT continues to impress with a narrow victory over RW.
Malvern beat SV by 2 behind Logan Smalley's 22 points (of 37) Abby Wood with 11 rebounds.
Burg beat CV 70-57. Creagan with 22.

Garaway was at Hiland watching the Lady Hawks play like turds in the first half. Left when Hiland got it in hand.

300, don't pick on TFAngel. She's awesome! You have to love a woman who knows her sports.
  • tfloangel
wow, iron drawers. apparently i'm too dim to even realize that was directed at me. maybe i'll go back on hiatus, although I didn't realize one needed an invite to an open forum.

also, junior fair enough as far as feeling like i was picking on you. i wasn't meaning to single you out, it was more that yours was the most recent post. that's all. guess i'll disappear again.

and thanks for sticking up for me pariah :)
  • Mr. 300
Dim.........yeah, let's go with that. LMAO!!
  • ricola
Hiland made the IVC interesting with a thrashing of undefeated Nct last night. Maybe they got their mojo back again. Mckenzie had an awesome night: good job Kenz.
  • profm
Hiland had an interesting coaching strategy, starting the game with the two best scorers on the bench and one of the other best scorers in Mexico for a wedding. Of course, the Mexico part may not have been a coaching strategy. :-)

Maybe coach was trying to encourage others to make more scoring attempts? Or just mix up the lineup to see what combinations work best? Who knows. With the constant substitutions, who starts or not doesn't have anything to do with how much they actually play.

It was certainly nice for the Hiland team to see them play well the whole game.
  • Pariah
The sitting of some players continued with the Northmont game. Evidently, priorities of players are supposed to be basketball, followed by basketball, and then basketball, and ensued by basketball.
  • ricola
and then basketball...and then maybe family/family events??? or does that come after a few more basketballs?

saw you at the boys game Thurs. Welcome back to sunny Ohio! Probably feels much better to you than the windy Mexican beach, eh? Thought the dome looked like it had a little more color!
