Santa Claus and other Christian misconceptions

  • Commander of Awesome
Marty's thread about Stupidville (lol see what I did there?) got me thinking about christianity and all the misconceptions that come with it.

First one that comes to mind is Santa Claus. lolfai on any christian thinking this has ANYTHING to do with christianity. "He" dates back to the byzantine empire (modern day turkey) as the Basil of Caesarea. That's a pagan. (He lived over 300 yrs after the supposed life of Jesus Christ).

This got me thinking, why the hell is Santa associated with the supposed birth of Jesus Christ to begin with? Well come to find out, "The eventual choice of December 25, made perhaps as early as 273, reflects a convergence of Origen's concern about pagan gods and the church's identification of God's son with the celestial sun. December 25 already hosted two other related festivals: natalis solis invicti (the Roman "birth of the unconquered sun"), and the birthday of Mithras, the Iranian "Sun of Righteousness" whose worship was popular with Roman soldiers. The winter solstice, another celebration of the sun, fell just a few days earlier. Seeing that pagans were already exalting deities with some parallels to the true deity, church leaders decided to commandeer the date and introduce a new festival."

LMAO, so let me get this straight. The date of 12-25 came because other more popular religions were holding their holy holidays during this time, and Christians jumped on the band wagon. Again, chosen 273 yrs, after the death of Jesus. What a joke.

We can start on the bible and where it's origins lie if other people are interested.

Am I correct in stating that your question is "Why do Christians celebrate 'Christmas' on December 25th?"

If that is the case, and you are up for changing the date, I'm game. Throw out a date... you have 364 choices.

My kids are 8 and 4 and have never heard me or my wife utter the name Santa Claus. Or Perre Noel. Or St. Nick. Or whatever else is ascribed to him on Miracle on 34th Street.

I think the real rub here is that people, like myself, believe Christ was born, no? And maybe you are not as sold on that position?

But, nonetheless, I think it is going to be very difficult to change the entire world's celebration habits, even for THEE Commander of Awesome.

If I am wrong on my initial question, fill me in on what I missed.

Huh? Say what you will about him religiously, but he definitely was a real person. History doesn't argue that

It's still debatable if JC was a real person. Of course, just being a real person has nothing to do with him rising from the dead or turning water into wine.

Look, COA, let's just cut the shit. Christianity isn't real, period. You can make up whatever you want about it since its based on nothing but childhood indoctrination for the past 6000 years. People need to grow up.

Wow your ignorance is astounding. Typical non approach, just blurt out BS as actual indenfensible truth and think that makes you correct. Contrary to your ill informed comment, there is a ton of evidence that he never existed.

"There is not one shred of secular evidence there ever was a Jesus Christ … Jesus is a compilation from other gods…who had the same origins, the same death as the mythological Jesus Christ." Direct quote from a historian on Larry King. lolfail

You would think after getting pwned so much and QQing about posting less because of us that he would just STFU. For some reason the little guy just keeps coming for more. It's quite comical. I almost feel bad for him (lol not really, he is a piece of shit.)

    Who was this historian?

Jesus Christ was a very spiritual human being. He wasn't God. All those miracles in the Bible never happened.

    Hope this helps.

"The Jesus of Nazareth who came forward publicly as the Messiah, who preached the ethic of the kingdom of God, who founded the kingdom of heaven upon earth and died to give his work its final consecration never existed..... He will be a Jesus, who was Messiah, and lived as such, either on the ground of a literary fiction of the earliest Evangelist, or on the ground of a purely eschatological Messianic conception. In either case, He will not be a Jesus Christ to whom the religion of the present can ascribe, according to its long-cherished custom, its own thoughts and ideas, as it did with the Jesus of its own making..... It is not given to history to disengage that which is abiding and eternal in the being of Jesus from the historical forms in which it worked itself out, and to introduce it into our world as a living influence."

There probably was a "Jesus", just not a divine one. His existence isn't really refuted anymore by historians, those historians just throw out all the myth surrounding him.

I honestly don't think I've ever heard a Christian say that "Santa" has anything to do with Christianity.
