Red light cameras.

justincrediblePretty soon we'll be living in a police state and, unfortunately, there will be plenty of people fine with that.
-
BORIStheCrusherI'm not sure how much they've done for safety, but I know the other day I slammed on my brakes and ended up half way into the intersection because a split decision thinking I might get flashed by one. And I'm WAY against the speeding cameras.
-
gerb131Against it but I have seen more red light runners in the past year than I have ever seen before. I pretty much look both ways even if my light is green.

if i remember correctly from the last time we had this thread. the number of accidents dont change when red light cameras are installed, but the severity of the accidents go down. less fatal accidents occur etc.BORIStheCrusher wrote: I'm not sure how much they've done for safety, but I know the other day I slammed on my brakes and ended up half way into the intersection because a split decision thinking I might get flashed by one. # of accidents have been shown to increase.
Out of the 18 intersections we tracked, 10 had fewer accidents, seven had more wrecks, and one intersection's accident numbers stayed the same.

Eyewitness News has proof that intersections across Orange County are safer because of red light cameras. In August of 2007, 262 red light runners were caught when the cameras were first installed in Apopka and that number dropped to 35 last month.
Also, accident reports show a 72 percent drop in crashes at Sheeler Avenue and 441, along with a 64 percent drop at Park Avenue.

jpake1I kinda like them. If I get caught, I'm sure I'll change my tune.

Against. Agree with the "too big brother-ish" comment.
And it does matter. If it doesn't matter to you, then you're part of a pretty big problem we have in this country. -

haha ok, what privacy do you have in public? plus, if the camera can see into your car, it falls under the plain view doctrine.SQ_Crazies wrote:

I see too many bad accidents in Columbus caused by self-important Yuppies in their SUV's who think the five-second rule applies to red lights. There was a bad one at Polaris and Worthington-Galena Road last month that killed someone. -

your sample is statisically small.
A collection of studies shows that cameras increase accidents significantly.

unless i misread it, the first study on that link only tried to disprove other studies that showed there was a decrease in accidents. i think this only shows that there is no absolute answer. sometimes it reduces accidents, in other places it doesnt. -
I Wear PantsIf the police like it...it probably sucks.

It appears that, as a whole, it essentially does nothing. Not that I'd be any less against them if they actually did reduce accidents.Glory Days wrote: unless i misread it, the first study on that link only tried to disprove other studies that showed there was a decrease in accidents. i think this only shows that there is no absolute answer. sometimes it reduces accidents, in other places it doesnt. -

I think you misread it...this seems pretty clear if you ask me.Glory Days wrote:

"Orban found the independent VDOT, Ontario and Burkey-Obeng studies (view studies) followed proper scientific methods and were fully open in sharing the data upon which the conclusions were based. These studies concluded that red light cameras caused an increase in injuries and overall accidents.
"Cities and counties should... pursue engineering improvements to enhance intersection safety for all drivers and passengers," Orban's report concluded. "Proven engineering practices and countermeasures can reduce crashes and injuries due to red light running, as well as other causes of intersection crashes."
The study shows that red light cameras do not make intersections more safe....in fact, just the opposite. If you want to make interesections safer, you do it thru engineering...not shaking down the public. -
Be NiceDefinitely against. It's your word against a picture. I'd rather debate a human being.
