Mayor being forced to resign after racial comment.
-
homefieldI just read that the martins ferry mayor is in trouble for using the word "spook" during a private meeting that was secretly taped by someone without him knowing. He said that he used the word to describe a black man that had killed his granddaughter and now the naacp wants him to step down.

tk421Stupid. People's thoughts and words in private have no bearing on their job. PC going way overboard.
-
stroupsIf people taped everything I said in private I would be thrown in jail.

tk421Hmm, I wonder if a black mayor would be called to resign if he was taped calling white people crackers? *sarcasm alert*
-
Pick6lololol only in martins ferry. this is the same town where the police chief actually broke into the house of the surrogate mother of sarah jessica parker.
-
FairwoodKingThe NAACP has zero tolerance for anything. That doesn't mean it should always get its own way.

Swamp FoxI think first of all, that there is a difference between calling a group of White People "crackers" who you have no connection with other than they are white people, than calling a Black man a "spook" who had killed your granddaughter. I don't think that it was a wise choice of words in either example, and I don't condone categorizing an entire group or a single member of a group in such a manner, but there is a difference. In the heat of a private moment, I can even understand a person, so overcome with grief that the poor choice of words may slip out in the case of the death of a granddaughter, but in neither case do I think the act of uttering such words should cost people their jobs. I would mark it down to grief in the first example and stupidity in the second. We should be able to express ourselves in this country without fear of reprisals in the form of losing jobs over words said in private. Everyone of us has something we are prejudiced about. If we fired every person who ever uttered a statement that was prejudiced in any way, our unemployment rate would be 100%.

queencitybuckeyeHas nothing to do with being PC (this has become a tired excuse for bad behavior, far worse than actual examples of it).
-
noreply66When you call someone a name it should be one that you can call anyone--lol
-
Con_AlmaThe only way to truly be able to measure a person is by the things they say and the things they do.
-
4cards...I agree it's a poor choice of words to use but this country has gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overboard when it comes to being PC. If he had said something different like calling the dude a cock sucking murderer, then the gays would be upset. You just can't say anything anymore without someone being offended.
...by the way my cock sucker comment was not meant to offend anyone in the gay communitee (disclaimer) -
queencitybuckeyeTwo references to "PC", both incorrecly used.

i was going to say that as well. if that happened and im sure it does, the black (oops can i saw that  ) mayor would face no consequenses complete double standardtk421 wrote: Hmm, I wonder if a black mayor would be called to resign if he was taped calling white people crackers? *sarcasm alert* -

It shouldn't matter anyway, regardless of it being private.tk421 wrote: Stupid. People's thoughts and words in private have no bearing on their job. PC going way overboard. -
supermanI hope he does step down and the people of Martins Ferry elect him via write-in ballot in the special election that will take place to replace him.
-
CenterBHSFanThe good people of MF have had to put up with highly publicized shenanigans and hijinx of their public officials for awhile now and their rightlfully sick of it.
The best thing to do in this situation is for the mayor to step out of the limelight.
I heard this story on Bloomdaddy's show something like a week (or longer) ago. I'll see if I can find the link. -
CenterBHSFanHere's a few podcasts in this link.

The NAACP ceased being a relevant organization about 30 years ago.FairwoodKing wrote: The NAACP has zero tolerance for anything. That doesn't mean it should always get its own way. -
Upper90He should probably step down. Private or not, he's in a position where he probably shouldn't say things of this manner. I agree with both Con Alma, and QCB. How else are we to judge a person that's in this position by anything other than words/actions?
And saying "This country is becoming too PC" has completely become a cop out for ignorance, and hate. Not saying that's TOTALLY the case in this situation, but I always see it thrown around, when it doesn't necessarily fit. -

This. Also for those that say if a black Mayor would say something of this nature and nothing would be done lets talk about it when it happens.Upper90 wrote: He should probably step down.
