Why would anyone go to schools like DeVry, ITT Tech, Everest, Keiser, Phoenix, etc..

No offense if you did or if you did how did it work out for you? I have always laughed at these schools and never looked into them for a second. I can tell you most companies when you leave the room will toss the copy of your degree from one of these in the trash and move on to the next candidate. I was reading an article today on the $$ involved with places like this and the debt racked up by former students who cannot get jobs in the field they went to these institutions to study for. You can tell easily who they target, low income, unemployed, or people in careers or aged who might not have time to be a full time student.
What really got me in this article was this:“They tell people, ‘If you don’t have a college degree, you won’t be able to get a job,’ ” said Amanda Wallace, who worked in the financial aid and admissions offices at the Knoxville, Tenn., branch of ITT Technical Institute, a chain of schools that charge roughly $40,000 for two-year associate degrees in computers and electronics. “They tell them, ‘You’ll be making beaucoup dollars afterward, and you’ll get all your financial aid covered.’ ”
You are going to pay 40g's for an AA that you can get at a credited community college for roughly 5 - 10g's that will get you into most 4yr schools to finish you bachelors???? What the hell are people thinking?? Take that AA from ITT Tech and see what school you can get into to finish. -
wes_mantoothWhat the eff are you talking about? I watch those ITT commercials and I want to be those people. It is my dream.......

Fab1bThey are living the dream!!

mucalum49I did an article on the Apollo Group last semester which runs the U of Phoenix and it is a real sleazy way of offering education. They have gotten in trouble multiple times for paying there employees commission to sign up as many people as possible when only 16% of them will actually finish their non-accredited programs.
My step dad is going to Kaplan because he was laid off last March with no real job prospects with only a high school diploma. One of my friends from my job at the time had a wife working with a company that helps get displaced employees government money to go learn a new trade. He is getting all but 2-3k paid for to go learn HVAC. -
Fab1bAnother very disturbing part of this article about a certain school whose tuition for the program is more than $41,000
Guess you'll be able to pay that debt off in no time!!“Our students are given the tools needed to become the future leaders in the industry,” proclaims the Le Cordon Bleu Web site. “Many graduates have attained positions of responsibility, visibility, and entrepreneurship soon after completing their studies.”
The job placement results that the school files with accrediting agencies suggest a different outcome. From July 2007 to June 2008, students who graduated from the culinary arts associate degree program landed jobs that paid an average of $21,000 a year, or about $10 an hour. Oregon’s minimum wage is $8.40 an hour. -
LJThe gov't hires a lot of these people when they go on mass hiring sprees.

gerb131Made the mistake of checking a continuing education box when filling out an online application for employment. Argosy University was the place and they probably called 500 times in a 2 month span before I went ape shit on them. I still get the occasional e-mail from them but for the most part they have ceased. Hell I don't even think they are accredited in Ohio.

georgemc80I don't know anything about the other schools....but the University of Phoenix is a very credible school for Bachelors and Masters and Doctoral degrees.

I know a few who got their degrees from there that work in my office and promotions have passed them by!georgemc80 wrote: I don't know anything about the other schools....but the University of Phoenix is a very credible school for Bachelors and Masters and Doctoral degrees. -

and the reason they didnt get promoted is because of where they went to school? that is some bs.Fab1b wrote:

I am not saying it is 100% but I know major companies frown on these places.Glory Days wrote:

mattinctown^^^^^ THAT. I know someone who interviewed with U. of Phoenix for an admissions position, they have to make 100 calls a day at least, and do get paid on commission. They can also get their salary lowered if they don't meet their quotas of accepted candidates.
-
O-TrapAsk Larry Fitzgerald. I believe he's finishing his degree at the U of Phoenix.
-
MrPokeThese schools are all operated with profit as the ultimate goal.

Insert every single school out there.MrPoke wrote: These schools are all operated with profit as the ultimate goal. -
tigerballonlineNot everyone is smart enough to go to college. If a person goes to U of Phoenix, the work is not easy. If a person is failing the classes, it is up to the individual to realize they are not making it. The difference between Phoenix and other schools is the admissions policy. Phoenix will take anyone who will pay.

Hell anyone can get into a community college!! Also the cost of a community college vs cost of one of those types of schools is way less. Why pay a school like ITT Tech up to $41,000 for a freaking AA that when you tell a potential employer you went to ITT Tech you get laughed at? So is it basically just buying a worthless degree then?tigerballonline wrote: Not everyone is smart enough to go to college. If a person goes to U of Phoenix, the work is not easy. I guess my intent of this post was originally to point out the cost of going to one of these schools that in turn basically gets you no where but in heaps of debt not being able to score a high paying job because you went to one of these schools. -
ManO'WarWe used to call the one across from YSU "Smoker's U" because in the winter they would all be huddled outside smoking in the freezing cold.
-
I Wear PantsI have no idea why you'd go to one of those schools.
-
dwccrewWhat if you have a degree from each of those places though?
-
mucalum49Another thing is the old "brick and mortar" universities are starting to offer more online programs. When a college friend considered getting his masters I know the University of New Hampshire offered the program online. I recently saw Duke and Penn State offer their MBA online and once the degree is earned there is no designation that you earned it remotely to avoid the stigma of online classes.
I would much rather go to one of these online programs over a for-profit university. -
I Wear Pants^^^^^ They're all for-profit.
The difference is industry recognition/accreditation. -
mucalum49Well yeah each school operates to make money... The difference is I can go buy stock in the companies that operate those online schools. From that paper I did for-profit university can be defined as "university that is ran by private, profit seeking, companies or organizations." So Apollo Group runs University of Phoenix and Devry Co runs Devry University etc...
Ohio State Inc. doesn't run OSU. -
I Wear PantsWell yeah, it's a state school. But something like Ashland University or Mount Union is definitely run by something akin to a corporate structure. The corporatism isn't what makes theses schools bad. What makes these schools bad is that they provide a poor education with little or no recognition in the industries that the degrees apply to.

sonofsamI have 2 friends that went to ITT Tech. One works for EA Sports making a very comfortable living, and the other works for the CIA making even more. MoW, if you are reading this, the guy that works for EA Sports has a surprise in an upcoming game... I will leave it at that.
