Sea World tapes will become public record

  • Speedofsand
The accident was captured on security video, which was turned over to the sheriff for investigation. When the investigation is complete, it becomes public record. The family wants to keep it unreleased. imho it would inflict undue grief to Dawn's family to be reminded of it. Staff had to lure the whale two tanks over to a scale to recover Dawn, and it took about 20 minutes from what I hear. I just don't believe its necessary for things like that to be released because of some stupid laws. They will get it, the Orlando Sentinel made a big issue of autopsy pics of Dale Earnhardt. /end rant.

Agree there 'Sand, can't think of a legitimate reason for the general public to watch tape of someone being killed at their workplace (or anywhere else).

It's the world we live in. After that guy died doing the luge at the Olympics, I think the stadium was packed the next night, and TV ratings were a bit higher for the luge events. It is sad that people get their jollies off watching this stuff. Not much has changed since people used to pack the Roman Coliseum to watch people kill each other.

How ironic is a poster named Quint commenting on this?

I am glad that you are taking it like that because it's a serious topic....but I gotta admit that I laughed a little bit! ;-)

The topic is very serious. . . but that was hilarious. I didn't even think about the irony. And my location is The Orca (the name of the boat in Jaws). Take everything I say with a grain of salt.

You think so? I was thinking on the other end of the spectrum. I figured they would have been leaked by now. Once the public becomes aware that something is out there, one way or another it'll be released. Doesn't make it right, but I figure some snake will get their hands on it and post it on the internet.

You guys may attack me for this but I'm sorry I want to see it! I posted that the day it happened and I want to see it now. Yes I am a sick bastard however people forget those animals are not pets and should not be in a freaking tank doing flips for fish rewards. They are deadly animals and maybe some folks need to be reminded of that!!

    I agree.

But I'm not sure I want to see the video.

I read somewhere today that the family has said that releasing the tapes would add to their pain and suffering. They've supposedly hired the same legal firm that Dale Earnhardt's widow used to attempt to keep the autopsy photos from becoming public record. You remember how long that saga played out

I think I'd find it appropriate that those who do that type of work could see the video as both a reminder and a trainer.

Kind of reminds me of the Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) tape. Only a few select people saw the tape and it was supposedly destroyed. How can future generations learn anything if there is no proof of what happened except say-so. As bad as it may be to watch, it would be worse to have it happen to somebody else because someone didn't want a tape released.

Whatever happens with the legal battle will happen. I can say for sure that I wouldn't want to see. Just not something that would appeal to me at all. I can see both sides of the argument, though.

I mean I feel like we have all seen an episode of ripley's believe it or not/worlds wildest videos or what ever one of those shows is called. I feel like we have all seen a tragedy where we thought someone died in one of those episodes. We have watched movies where people die. If you watch this video, you won't think about it in a week, month, or year. You will say "Holy S***" and go about your day. Maybe say a prayer for the family. I want to see it. I want to see what would happen if a KILLER WHALE killed somebody.

    That's just my take.
