What is a better workout?
-
slingshot4everAssuming the same distance what would be a better work out? I just got done with 5 miles of roller blading in about 45 minutes to an hour and I am spent.
-
stroupsYou know what the hardest part about rollerblading is?

sleeperIt's rollerblading simply because its less punishment on your joints. It probably works more muscles too since there is extra motion involved.

Had never seen that before, haha. -
Gblockrunning is a better workout
rollerblading is probably better for your joints -
Strapping Young LadHey, that's my joke!!!! I love that one.
Why is it that rollerblading absolutely cannot be a better workout than running,, CC??? i run everyday and I've played roller hockey. I'll bet my house that roller-blading uses more muscles than running. It takes a very strong core (low back and abs) to be a sound rollerblader. Much moreso than running.
you're just biased for running to the point of stupidity.....
you'd need alot more situational data than what's been covered on this thread to determine which is the better workout..... -
Manhattan BuckeyeYou can coast rollerblading, you can't coast running. There is no rest while running unless you just stop.
If it takes 45-60 minutes of time to go 5 miles rollerblading I can only hope that person is going uphill the whole way. That is a very mediocre time for even an intermediate runner. -
Gblockwell you burn more calories running, and you use more muscles running.....roller blades have wheels a simple machine that makes work easier so ill go with running...
-

That time included stopping at some intersections to wait for traffic....I would say 30-40 minutes of actual skating.Manhattan Buckeye wrote: You can coast rollerblading, you can't coast running. There is no rest while running unless you just stop.

detectivegibblesI don't see how you use more muscles doing either. I think it is just the severity of how you are using those muscles that differ.
Running = better work out
RollerBlading = hell of a lot more fun I am sure -
rugbywrestler^^^well there you have it, I would have guessed rollerblading but guess not

That's per hour. I think if you were to talk about the same distance (the original question) then running would be even better as you should be able to cover a much greater distance in an hour of roller blading.mattinctown wrote: http://www.livestrong.com/article/30424-one-hour-activity-list-calories/ -

Agreed. I would imagine on a flat surface the average roller blader does better than 8mph, that is a fairly decent 5-mile speed for a runner assuming it isn't a race situation with no kick at the end, but should be relatively slow for a blader.FatHobbit wrote:

And having rougly 80 calories burned more per hour is the standard for a better workout?FatHobbit wrote:

I'll trade those 80 calories for a MUCH lower impact on the joints, and the sheer pleasure of rollerblading, -
Manhattan BuckeyeThe joint argument is not relevant, if you pay attention to your workout and your body and get the proper rest when needed, there is no reason why running should be remotely harmful. If you are 40% above your proper weight for your height than yeah, it can be a problem. And again, the initial post was about distance. I know few people that roller blade for an hour or more. Heck, I did a pre-lunch easy run of 70 minutes today with no problem and covered 8+ miles getting ready for a competition 10-K in a few weeks. How long would it take for a blader to cover 8 miles? Hopefully a lot less than 70 minutes! And with rest/coast time. To my earlier point you can't rest running. Either you are, or you aren't. And when you aren't you're not going anywhere.

BoatShoesRunning is a better workout but...what's more important is whether you enjoy doing it. In my experience, there's a decent amount of people who just dislike running. Going out and being active and doing something you enjoy is more important. Doing intense sprints up a hill is a great workout, but few people find that enjoyable enough to do every day. So, if you enjoy rollerblading...strap em on everyday and have at it.
