That's not at all what I was saying or what you were saying.SQ_Crazies wrote: LOL, seriously?
My grandpa snores louder than anyone I've ever heard, so does that mean he'd win the World Snoring Championship?
That makes as much sense as some of the shit you're coming up with.
You said that since millions and millions viewed Avatar it had to be a good film.
By that same reasoning millions and millions eating McDonald's validates it as a quality food.
It makes perfect sense. Don't know why you had to drag your poor grandfather into this. -

Nah, you did that a long time ago with your infamous PM meltdown.SQ_Crazies wrote:
Well you just took yoursaelf out of this adult discussion.2kool4skool wrote:
Woah, calm down chief. I understand you're passionate about Avatar because it didn't have many black people in it, but no need to make a bunch of irrational arguments because of it.SQ_Crazies wrote: You're right, a documentary that was released in like 5 cities is totally on par for a comparison with a worldwide release on a movie that cost 100 times more to make. Pretty fair to compare attendance figures there...
Regardless, I'll try and treat you as an adult capable of rational discussion here.
The highest grossing movie of each year is exactly that; the highest grossing movie. It doesn't mean that it was the best, or even that the most people liked it. A very small % of Avatar's gross was from repeat viewers. People bought tickets because of the trailer, advertising campaign, and knowing exactly what they were going to get; a comfortable, don't make me think too much, plot with fantastic special affects.
If you want to argue Avatar was the best film this year, go right ahead, it's certainly revolutionary and entertaining. But don't use stupid arguments like "well it sold the most tickets, must be better." If anything, history has shown us the highest grossing films each year don't really stand up over time, and generally the under the radar ones are seen as the best years down the road.
Basically, just use some actual critical thought to support your argument. -
SQ_CraziesOh hmm, let me repeat myself again, when you couple the fact that it was the highest grossing movie of all time (not just the year) and it was also good, it is the best.
-
SQ_CraziesOh and umm, can you tell me what PM stands for? Douche bag.

Why do you keep saying "was also good" like it is some fact?SQ_Crazies wrote: Oh hmm, let me repeat myself again, when you couple the fact that it was the highest grossing movie of all time (not just the year) and it was also good, it is the best.
I mean, I agree that Avatar was a good, although nowhere near great, film but that doesn't make it so.
It being the highest grossing movie and you liking it aren't really supportive reasons for your opinion.
"I thought it's groundbreaking special effects work combined with it's ability to enrapture audiences while trying to make a point about the ills of our capitalist society made it the best film of the year"
^^ Something like that would be an opinion that we could say "I disagree with you about it being the best film of the year but you have your reasons to believe it was so it's just a matter of opinion at this point" to. -
ohiotiger33
The only reason it is the highest grossing movie of all time is because it is widely available in 3D, which costs extra money to see. Also, inflation puts it in front of a lot of movies.SQ_Crazies wrote: Oh hmm, let me repeat myself again, when you couple the fact that it was the highest grossing movie of all time (not just the year) and it was also good, it is the best.
When adjusted for inflation, the list looks like this:
1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
5 The Ten Commandments
6 Titanic
7 Jaws Uni.
8 Doctor Zhivago
9 The Exorcist
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
11 101 Dalmatians
12 The Empire Strikes Back
13 Ben-Hur
14 Avatar
15 Return of the Jedi
16 The Sting
17 Raiders of the Lost Ark
18 Jurassic Park
19 The Graduate
20 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace -

PM = Private Message

SQ_CraziesUm...I shouldn't have to post things like that about Avatar. That's common knowledge.
I also find this funny, just read it a few times...

I know all about inflation, Gone With the Wind kills everything. Wonder why? Because it was a great movie. Star Wars? I'd say that's stood the test of time... -
ohiotiger33I don't think something being good is "common knowledge."
The fact that I could have written the screenplay for the movie was troublesome to me. It was so predictable I literally fell asleep, and when I woke up, I hadn't missed a thing; the two naavi people were just galavanting the whole time.
To each his own, but I have seen many movies that were much better than Avatar recently. To name a few:
Up- Great movie, Pixar hit a homerun here
Shutter Island- Awesome psychological Thriller
Sherlock Holmes- Saw this the day after Avatar, and honestly enjoyed it much much more -

What if it would have been the 2nd highest grossing movie of all-time, would it have still deserved the award? Or does it have to be the highest grossing? Is there a formula comparing the value of "good" to "money" so we can know which is most important in a given circumstance?SQ_Crazies wrote: Oh hmm, let me repeat myself again, when you couple the fact that it was the highest grossing movie of all time (not just the year) and it was also good, it is the best. -

No...that is common knowledge."I thought it's groundbreaking special effects work combined with it's ability to enrapture audiences while trying to make a point about the ills of our capitalist society made it the best film of the year"
LOL why are you still stuck on money? Maybe if you wouldn't have been 2 kool 4 skool you'd remember that I said the movie was also good--so when a movie is not only good but it's that successful, yeah, it's the clear winner.
I'm done with you anyways, I could really care less who wins an Academy Award anyways lol. -

A racist private message is no different than a racist public message. Just means you didn't have the balls to post it in the forum. Fortunately someone did that for us so we all know who we're dealing with.
It was quite clear I did remember that, hence including the fact you thought the movie was good in my post.....SQ_Crazies wrote: Maybe if you wouldn't have been 2 kool 4 skool you'd remember that I said the movie was also good
And now you have a problem with the screen name I chose for this forum. It seems to you the internet is indeed; serious business. -
ohiotiger33Pirates 3 made a ton of money, and it was trash.
Spiderman 3 made over 330 Million bucks= terrible terrible movie.
Pearl Harbor made 200 million and was just insufferable.
Meet the Fockers made almost 300 million and was about as bad a sequel as they could have made.
Money isn't everything in movies. Some of the best movies didn't make much at all. -

Too bad you just quoted me and not only is my username not "2 kool 4 skool" but I don't even claim to be that cool. I'm also enrolled at YSU so that wouldn't make sense anyway.SQ_Crazies wrote:

2kool4skoolFor those wondering if I found irony in a Kent State student questioning someone's education: the answer is yes, yes I did.
-
SQ_CraziesYSU? Ouch. You Screwed Up.
Join the club. I go to Kent State. Which means I can't read, can't write and I Kent State. Or something like that...
Don't worry about screwing up, you know if you don't go to OSU then your automatically a screw up. -

Serious note: Didn't screw up insomuch as I didn't feel like paying the $35k that Ashland University charges anymore. -
SQ_CraziesNo shit. I would have moved to YSU too.
-
SQ_CraziesSo in all seriousness, I'm not mad. I'm actually floating in the clouds right now, so I'm the exact opposite. I don't really care, my opinion is that Avatar should have won it. I could seriously give a shit who wins a movie award. Just bored lol.
But yeah 2kool, the PM thing is bullshit. Not mad about it, because I don't really care, but if you ask me a private message is a private message. If people want to be pussies and share it with everyone then whatever, but they're still a pussy. They gotta live with that, not me.
