Jealousy (In the workplace)

  When someone younger, with less experience than you, moves up the ladder faster than you, how do you react? (Note: I'm only talking about the people that actually deserve it. No nepotism or anything like that involved).
  
  - Are you one to compliment and say good job?
  - Do you bust your butt harder to move up the ladder?
  - Do you tell them face-to-face that they don't deserve it, just to make yourself feel better?
  - Do you bash them behind their back? (The most popular, cowards way out. Yes, this IS the most popular).
  - Do you just say the hell with it, and keep doing mediocre work, b/c you're happy with that?
  
  In one of my jobs, I might have the opportunity to move "up" in the ranks, or "level of importance," something like that. I've worked my butt off for 10 years, have not kissed butt, been polite, etc. Now, in this particular line of work, when someone moves "up" there are always those who cut them down, regardless of how good the person is at what they do.
  
  So... how do you react? Honestly?

  I'm not the jealous type so I'd be one to offer congratulations.

  Keep busting my butt and congratulate them. I've always felt confident in managers when selecting people to move up as well. They obviously saw something in the person they selected.

  There are always people in a company that are comfortable never moving up to a higher level. A level with more responsibility, more headaches, more employees to be in charge of. It is these exact people who are the dreggs of a company. They have never been in charge of anything... all they want to do is cut people/managers/advancing employees down, bitch and complain, and be a royal pain in the ass. They generally have noting else to do with their life.. Tis really sad.
  
  I would congratulate them... Take the job and tell the underlings to pound salt if they do not like the situation. Do what is best for you, the family, and the company.

  At my company, those chosen to move up are seldom anywhere near the ones that deserve it, they're just the ones willing to work any shift. Management is so fucked up there. They take no time to learn anything they have been put in charge of. Some of the things they've done are too stupid to even type. If it wasn't for so many laborers knowing their own jobs as well as they do, the company would be screwed, because managers wouldn't be able to train anyone new. It's bad, real bad. I don't respect the authority of anyone that has gone into management since I've been there. I just go in, do my job, and get out, and collect my paycheck.
  
  What's really funny, is when a manager that used to do a certain job, expects those doing that same job now to be able to do twice as much as they could do when they did it. If you're a manager in a factory, you should be able to know my job and do it better than me. This place I'm at is the only factory I've ever worked where the bosses didn't know more and couldn't do a better job than me.
  
  Yes, I'm talking factory.

  I couldn't care less who bangs my exes, so sure.

  I'd congratulate them. It's not a zero-sum game, and the success of the organization is my surest way to remaining employed.

  While my case would be slightly different, I'd get a degree from The Ohio State University, which will give you the necessary skills in order to the one consistently promoted regardless of age. But I answered, "bust your own butt" because if you don't want it you ain't getting it, and you can take that to the bank.
