I Just Don't Get TV Censors...

Who decides what you can and can't say on TV? It's mind boggling to me.

I'm sitting here procrastinating, and I'm watching American History X on FX. Apparently, the censors decided that you cannot say bullshit on TV at 12:00 in the afternoon. That's a terrible word, and needs to be changed to bullcrap. I'm ok with that...I can somewhat understand it.

So bullshit is bad....but apparently the "N word" doesn't need censored.

I don't get it. How can you say the "N word" on TV...but can't say bullshit?

The concept of words being "naughty" is so strange...especially when the specific utterances can be associated with the same external object yet one can be "bad"...for instance "doody" and "shit" are both referring to fecal matter but one of those specific utterances is naughty.

    That's bullshit.

    It has to do with:

    -Cable vs Broadcast
    -Time of day/night
-The content of the matter (what the issue at hand is)

In your case, at noon, almost nothing can be said on TV. After (I think) 8pm the rules become more lax. You simply need a warning everytime back from commercial. But still cant say fuck, god damn, etc. After 10 pretty much anything goes but renditions of Fuck.

However, if the content of the matter (in your case N-word) American History X, call for something because it is integral to the plot. In the case of Comedy Central the whole English Dictionary is pretty much integral because of the jokes (but I think it is only after 1am. So you will turn that on and get a plethor of cocksuckers, mutherfuckers, etc.

It's also all contextual, too. Example:

Last night on Jon Lajoie's Comedy Central Presents special he was doing the "Show Me Your Genitals" rap. At the beginning of the song, the line is, "I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams...so why you sharing all this information with me?" Then later, there's a line where he says, "Bitches love my penis cuz it's really big."

In the first line, penis and fist were bleeped out. In the second, nothing got bleeped.

Censors are just gay. Like BoatShoes said, who ever decided which words are supposed to be the bad ones and which ones are supposed to be the good ones? When I was four, I got soap in my mouth for saying "I stepped in dog shit." But my mom read me a book when I was being potty trained called "Everybody poops."

Yeah in certain contexts it's alright to say nigger on tv. It's the same with satellite radio. Sirius/XM actually have dumps if terms are used in malice, but if someone says nigger in an explanatory or educational type of way it is alright. I believe it's alright if black people say it in songs also.

At a certain time though, Comedy Central is pretty much uncensored. I've seen one of the roasts played with no bleeps at night before.

It's annoying how much power people give words. They are simply words and nothing more.

The FCC does blow. That's the first thing I'm getting rid of when I become President.

Seriously, this site bleeps the "n word" also?

Just in the past few weeks they have been really clamping down on that stuff. It is rule #4 now I think

Ever watch daytime soap operas? My wife records one and watches it in the evening while I am on Freehuddle. I think someone is called a bitch like every five minutes. It's funny to think other censors will not even let you say hell.
