Numbers that Make a Statement

  • ernest_t_bass
What are numbers (in sports, obviously) that, when they are adorned by participants, make a statement. Regardless of whether or not the player is meaning to make the statement, when you see this number, it says something.

    My examples:

Basketball - #23 - When someone chooses that number, I see them as someone who thinks they're the best player, or who is one of the better players. Not always going to be the best player. They wear this number for the obvious Michael Jordan and/or Lebron James.

Hockey - #99 - I don't know much about hockey, but if I were to see someone wearing this number, I would probably think similar things as listed above. Wayne Gretzky.

Auto Racing - #3 - Same. The Intimidator, Dale Earnhardt.

    Football - #32
    Hockey - #99 and #66
    Baseball - #3 and #42
    Basketball - #23 and to a lesser extent, #6
    Racing - #3 and #43

The fact that I probably don't have to explain the significance of each answers your question.

LOL... I don't get all of them.

I don't know about pro numbers other than the obvious 23 but I associate alot of numbers with my high school days. Certain friends always wore certain numbers.

#1... If someone chooses this number then most of the time they probably think they are the best.

wearing the #1 says "look at me, I think I'm the greatest and my coach was stupid enough to let me have this number"

When I've coached nobody has every worn #1....won't allow it. There's no "1" in team.....lol

I think it is not as simple as just the number-- you have to add the team in there with the number. For instance, #14 to the Cincinnati Reds equates to Pete Rose and Pete Rose only, but #14 for any other team really does not have the same meaning.

Do not know if it breaks the rules to quote yourself.... but I am.

It is not always true... but these two numbers (0, 00) have a preponderance of egotistical richard heads sporting it...
