Garth might have been the best at moving country to a more pop status, but that's it.
Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia (Old and In the Way, Garcia/Kahn, etc. stuff that was more country/bluegrass and less psychedelic) and many others are far better than a guy who became idolized because he took a genuine form of music and greatly assisted in making it generic and mainstream.
Shit, you find me a better song that the Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson, Jennings "Highwayman" and I'd be amazed. -
